Title: Orcstralians; When Theme Gets Crazy...
Description: Incoming squigs! 25th May Update

rat of vengence - January 3, 2009 01:01 PM (GMT)
Hey all. I have had a major change of mind. I had started my O&G army under the theme of Morgitz' Mad Monks of Mork. Not a bad theme, NG helped with the monks bit, and I used loads of blue to tie the army together.

Then I left the UK and returned to Australia.

And then I had some ideas for conversions.

And so, I decided to change direction, and repaint a good proportion of my army. I had enough trouble painting my horde in the first place :(

Anyways, I am trying to Orcstralianfy my army. I haven't finished, and some things are yet to be revealled, but here is what I have so far.

Goblin Redback Riders. The painting is far from finished, especially the spiders (they aren't redbacks yet), but I am having the boomerangs count-as shortbows.

Da Angry Mob. Well, the orcs are basically outfitted as convicts, with the 3 command models as redcoats. Lots more work to be done here, but the Mob is taking shape. Note the Boss. He is the biggest Night Gobbo ever (okay, not the size of the giant one I saw here somewhere) due to the Mushroids in a greenstuffed pouch he has. Of course, I call him Arnie. His favourite quote?

Wait for it...

"Get to da Choppa!"

Here is the other Mob. Any Aussie will recognise the standard.

My fanatics will be footy fanatics. Originally it was hazard stripes (fanatics are dangerous you know, OH&S and all) but I decided they are now Hawthorn fanatics. I will do up a Swans fanatic soon!
user posted image

My Warboss. Not very Aussie yet, but he currently rides a Razorback (Aussie wild pig). I am in the process of planning my general. He will be based on Steve Irwin, but less dead.
user posted image

So, what do you reckon fellas? I have plans for more units;
Gobbo Wolfriders = Dingo Riders
Squig Hoppers = Squigaroos
Goblin Doom Diver = Goblin Dunny Diver
Boar Chariot = Wombat Chariot

My plans and imagination outstrip my greenstuff ability, but give me time... :yarr!:

Oh, my original army blog is still in my sig if anyone is interested.

Some nice ideas there and good skill to boot. It isn't the most obvious theme, but very clever none the less. I look forward to seeing more.

Goomb - January 3, 2009 08:57 PM (GMT)
Crickey, cool theme, mate! :yarr!:

I seem to change my theme/design midstream on projects, so I appreciate your work here. I think there are a lot of neat things you can do with your army such as bushmen grots and whatnot. Could be VERY cool when you get it done. Could you work the ol "shrimp on a barbie" into it?

Keep it going!

Well, I was trying to see how I could work another pun ito it...

Not a Rock Lobber...

A Rock Lobster!!!

*cue B52's here*

I will have to see what I can do. ;)

Thanks for the comment fellas. Something different is what I want it all to be.

Yeah, these guys are looking great and a very original theme too.

Makes me think I should have more of a theme to my guys... hmmm

Bidiot. :D

Wombats should be squigs, they're that awesome.

Goomb - January 5, 2009 01:23 AM (GMT)
Waiting for the next batch of piccies so I can say: "Looks at those buggas! They're real beauties!"

Damn that manta ray....I really liked that guy.

.... you don't actually know what a wombat is, do you? :P

Mate, I'm lovin' this theme at the moment :D a few ideas:

- Aboriginal Savage Orcs. No disrespect to our Abo mates, but the more primitive, in touch with Orcy nature Savages just seem to work there.

- Rock Lobba armed with Drop-bears ;)

- RED SAND BASES! We come from the great red land mate, those bases need to be red'd up!

- Little "Croc Hunter" snot herds (fighting snakes, spiders, lizards etc). Don't tell me Bindi Irwin doesn't remind you of a snot...

Anyway that's off the top of my head. Should come up with a few later :D

Cheers!

Ahh, that's the right word: aborigines. I said "bushmen." Whoops, wrong continent! Crap, my sincerest apologies! :(

I really didn't know what a wombat was either, and although it sounds cool, wombats look somewhat like a koala bear with small ears! Not killy at all, I am afraid. <snicker> I had to look up them on the net here too.

Thanks for the replies fellas! It is encouraging thast others think the idea is good.

I went with aboriginal style for my spider riders, and will for my dingo (wolf) riders when I find/sculpt a good dingo model. I don't actually have any savage orc models, otherwise a great idea.
The dropbear lobber is on the drawing board, so to speak. It will be coming... :yarr!:

Red sand bases. I was thinking of that, but it would involve rebasing my entire army, and superglued static grass has a bit of grip. Any ideas on redoing the bases, because the red sand idea is good?

Bindii Irwin snot bases? Inspired... :D

Don't worry Goomb, right idea though. :P

Oh no, too many Australian jokes are swimming in my head right now. I live in the middle of the US and my old high school president was from Australia.... we made fun of him so much.

Those are some great looking greenskins, though. Very original theme, and your execution is coming along very well so far. :D

G'day

Interesting idea
Just a few thoughts

- Bunyips as trolls
- Orc stockmen instead of slavers

Wait and see if anything else comes to mind

rat of vengence - January 7, 2009 01:14 PM (GMT)
Bunyips as trolls had occured to me. Stockmen slavers hadn't.

I LIKE it! :yarr!:

In fact, with my trolls I have a non-GW figure, Confrontation I think. Anyway, it is the fatest orc you've ever seen, like Greasus Goldtooth fat. He will be the 'keader of my trolls...

Big Kev.

Hey all. Been busy lately, so no updates, but an upcoming tournament should help!

Here are some more Spider Riders, now with extra boomerang!
user posted image

More painting needed of course, but the riders are pretty much done.

Here is Big Kev, and a troll I did a while ago for comparison. I dunno when I will use trolls again, too unreliable for my liking, but just in case...

The Giant is next. I need to greenstuff a singlet, and he will be painted as a westie (or Bogan for you southerners) with a beer ad on the singlet, tats on his skin and uggs if I am feeling adventurous. I hope my GS skills are up to it :(

Awww, c'mon. If the Squigs are going to be anything other than actual Squigs, then they need to be modeled as Kiwis :P

What...? Why're you all looking at me like I just sat in a dog poo?

Sure, Kiwis aren't native to Aussie. Heck, they're practically defenseless birds considering their lack of flight and all. But (time for the obligatory NZ vs Aussie joke - meant with my tongue FIRMLY in my cheek) we all know that any Kiwi living in Aussie is clearly a big dumb beast whose only instinct is to leap across ditches and be ridden around by creatures of equal intelligence ^_^

Okay, so that actually comes across to me as more of an insult to Kiwis...

Anyways, on a more serious note: Tasmanian Devils for Squigs! And if you want to keep the Tassie theme: Your Wolf Boyz (if you plan on including any) : Tasmanian Tigers. That, or Platypus.

Loving the theme so far: Keep up the great work!

Borzag - February 18, 2009 01:14 PM (GMT)
Bugger that; Wolf Boyz = Emus :D

Squig Kiwis though, that I like... if anyone asks he can claim they're Lyrebirds, but Kiwis works too :D

rat of vengence - February 23, 2009 08:49 AM (GMT)
Well, I took my Orcstralians to a 5 game 2250 point tournament on the weekend. Some things I learnt;

Everyone fears squig hoppers
Fanatics are more of a deterent and movement hinderance than killing machines
6 Stegadons in one army are tough, but beatable
25 orc blocks are pretty durable
O&G do NOT like playing VC

I won 2, drew 1 and lost 2, so ended up even. Got lots of compliments on the theme, so I was happy with that. Painting updates coming soon!

Well, long time no blog. To be honest, sometimes I get distracted from my greenskins by things 40k, my marines and lately my Witch Hunters. But progress has been happening, so here goes.

For a local GW conversion competition I wanted to create a Snotling Pump Wagon, largely because they are too expensive (imo) to buy off the shelf. I tossed a few ideas around, one of which you may yet see (pumpwagons are a 2 for 1 rare choice :yarr!: ), but had trouble coming up with something distinctly Aussie. Then I remembered the Henley-on-Todd races.
user posted image
With that as inspiration I took several spare chariot parts, a BfSP troll, and some random snotlings...

The two snotlings holding paddles are both the same stodgy one holding a club that you got with other goblin kits. I did want to have more snotlings festooned upon the wagon, but I couldn't fit anymore on; all mine are the stand there brandishing a club type.

Anyways, I hope you like it. I think my next project will be converting my giant to be Merv Hughes, champion squigget player. :D

very nicely built

just got an idea: what about spear chukka's that fire stingray's?

rat of vengence - January 13, 2010 11:54 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the, um, appreciation

I have more ideas than time at the moment. I have bought some Fimo clay to start modelling Tasmanian Devils to replace my wolves, I need to do the giant conversion I mentioned above, and I want to replace the Doom Diver with a Dunny Diver. I can picture all these things, but can I do them? :ph43r:

YOU WERE ALL THINKING IT!

Anyway to join the appreciated appreciation, that does look the business :) one thing from me though: are you gonna connect the banner up to anything? At the moment it's a bit of cloth connected by the top, and won't provide any sail power (yes I'm aware that all the motive power will come from the Snots and Orc). Maybe a bit of twisted wire rope in a corner or 2?

Aside from that, nice :)

Cheers!

On a side note.. really... are you making proper devils? Or the cartoon version... as I really can't think which I'd prefere to see ;)

rat of vengence - January 13, 2010 02:31 PM (GMT)
Nice one Borzag

Yeah, there will be 'rope' from each lower corner of the banner. I will keep it simple, it might get too busy.

My mistake fellas, I meant to say Tasmanian Tigers. I could do Devils I guess. How about I try sculpting a Tasmanian ......., and you guys tell me which one it looks most like. I haven't sculpted anything this large before :cheese:

Urch! No! Don't use Fimo - I recommend using Greenstuff and converting an existing GW model, rather than starting from scratch.

What about using the new(ish) plastic Chaos Warhounds as a base? They are pretty skinny and evil-looking.

Excellent pump wagon idea. Great build. Glad to see this blog updated and you are still working on the theme. Don't make us wait another year for an update.

rat of vengence - January 14, 2010 05:51 AM (GMT)
Scary feedback Kurgan, but I have yet to open the Fimo packet, so I may end up agreeing with you. I have some spare wolves that I could work with, but I am keen to see what I can up with trying my hand at sculpting. So I guess I will try sculpting, cry in disgust, then mod an existing model :D

Paiant Slapah, I promise it won't be another year! :P

Here you will see my next project. I put the dingo and Tassie Tiger sculpting on hold; I knew I wouldn't have long enough in one go to do it properly. So instead I bring you in progress pics of...

Merv Huge, champion squigget player, and all round one eyed greenskin supporter.

He is painted already, but it was a rush job. I plan to do him properly along the lines of Mostyn's excellent tutorial.

I am reall happy with the pads for his legs, I purposely made them small for his size (helps with the idea of scale), and had a good go at incorporating the existing 'wraps' around the back of his legs. I like 'em :D .

The mo is what I was after. I will have to see how it looks painted though, I may have gone too subtle on the hair detail

The Baggy Green (Aussie test cricket cap for those who know not :P ) was a first attempt, and done while nowhere near a computer. I just got home, and a 30 sec look on Google Images has shown me it should be 6 segments, not quartered. I also need to bulk it slighty, make it more 'baggy' funnily enough. I should be able to rescue it, but if not I will pry it off and have another go.

The Baggy Green of one of the greatest cricket captains ever!

I still need to do his tatty, somewhat too short white cricket vest, and being Merv, he needs a gold chain around his neck.

So, how do you like it?

I... shall not rise to the bait and sledge you about the cricket... it just wouldn't be very lady like of me. However, this made me laugh. Another fun conversion!

Come on, I did leave some wiggle room; I did say "One of the best..." Mind you, Ponting isn't doing too badly either, but I grew up in the same suburb as the Waugh boys (never met them though) so I have a soft spot for them.

Yeah, I like doing things fun. If people look at my army and say "Cool!", that is good. If people get the jokes/puns and say "Duurrrr, that's sad." that is good too. Get a reaction, that is what I aim for! :yarr!:
