does the flip lever on the lower right reverse the carriage direction.??? I assume the star wheel engages a friction clutch to drive the carriage. If I'm right about the flip lever, then where is the power cross feed control. My ATW is a bit different. |

OH , I see said the blind man--- does the flip lever up on headstock reverse the feed rod, or the lead screw or both???? I assume the lead screw is inside the bed as was typical of old americans, but mine is pre quick change so it has a cone belt drive to change speeds on the feed rod, and 'change gears' to change the lead screw. If you need to cut a scroll plate, there is a way to gear drive the feed rod off the change gears to get a positive drive for scroll threading |

Van the chuck is bolted to adapter with 4 bolts, I checked the face plates one is 2 1/4 inch's and the other one is 2 3/4. I couldn't fine my thread gage to check the threads. So now I'm wondering what the spindle really is....I'm going to try a get a measurement tomorrow...

It's pretty typical for the old chucks to have a 4 bolt adapter. There were no standards for spindle mounts, so the chucks were made 'flat backed' and it was assumed that machinists would make their own mounts. If you want a cast iron blank for turning them, at least the supply house where we buy round stock carries round stock cast iron big enough for the job. However I've turned mine out of regular iron. Sometimes fabbing them. However the chuck mounting project that I haven't gotten around to is mounting a 30" 4 jaw on my ATW and for that I will simply slightly modify a dog face plate that I have for it, and simply bolt the chuck to the dog face. I don't ever recall actually using a dog face plate for anything, as when I want to turn something with a dog I have invariably used a bent tail dog and just hooked it on a chuck jaw. |
