QUOTE
Allardyce has to stay, says Butt

The pressure is mounting on Allardyce at Newcastle
Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt has urged the club to keep faith with under-fire manager Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce admitted the pressure was mounting after the Magpies lost to Manchester City at home on Wednesday - their third successive defeat.

But Butt said: "Things will never improve unless he's given time. I've been here for three-and-a-half years and I've had four managers.

"Sooner or later someone has got to say this is the manager we're standing by."

Newcastle face high-flying Championship side Stoke in the FA Cup third round on Sunday and defeat would make Allardyce's position even more precarious after only seven months in charge.

Give him a year to get his hands on the team and he'll make us a top-six side I'm sure

However, Butt, who spent 11 years under Sir Alex Ferguson at former club Manchester United, is convinced stability is the key to long-term success.

"If you look at all the big teams, like United and Arsenal, they're the clubs that have stood by managers for a long time," he said.

"If we do that, I'm sure we'll do it right."

The 32-year-old added: "These are tough times at the moment but all of us in the dressing room just have to stand up and be counted.

"Lately, there have been signs we are improving. Had we taken one of our chances when we lost 2-0 against Manchester City on Wednesday, it could have been a different story. We didn't and we have to kick on."

bit in bold is the most telling comment of all

"When you do that with footballers, like he said about Leeds... I've kept
really quiet, but I'll tell you something, he went down in my
estimations when he said that. We have not resorted to that, but I'll tell
you, you can tell him now, he'll be watching this, we're still fighting for
this title. He's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something. I'll tell
you honestly, I would love it if we beat them, love it."

It's fair to say that quite a lot of people were more than happy with the appointment of Sam Allardyce. Equally, there were many people who never wanted him through the door. I wouldn't say they will be happy that at the moment, as they look to be correct, but it would be nice to know why they opposed his appointment.

Was it because they thought he would play shit football ala Bolton style, ugly and flairless ?

You can count me out of those particular group. I admit I wanted Sam. I also recognised that Bolton weren't the best team to watch. But I was one of those who thought he had attributes to manage Newcastle and would be adaptable to managing superior players, after all hasn't he managed players such as Anelka, Gary Speed, spitting Diouff, to name 3, better than most ?

This was his biggest and single attribute.

The biggest mistake he has made so far, is going into games against the lower teams in the league where he appears to have adopted the mentality that we have to avoid defeat before winning. The selections he has made, has mirrored this thought process.

He still has the Bolton mentality, instead of the bigger club mentality.

Can he adapt, will he become a "Newcastle manager". I think it would be a great shame if we didn't give him time and he went somewhere and did - for a bigger club than Bolton - what we all hoped he would do for us ie be better for the experience and learned the hard way how to step up in his mindset.

Typical Newcastle though. As Nicky Butt says today in the press, he's been here for 3 and a half years and Sam is the 4th manager he's played for. This is clearly a ludicrous state of affairs.

This is why I say we should stick with him, for now. We can't afford to keep changing managers.

In my opinion, they need to get together with Sam, and find out where he thinks that the problems are, and what he thinks needs to be done about it. His future at the club probably depends on the outcome and his evaluation, because if he still thinks that new defenders are the most urgent priority then he has got it all wrong. Only Mort and Ashley can do this. If they want to avoid a freefall into the relegation zone, they may have to do this, and soon, because we are now in the transfer window, and come the end of january we have to stick with what we have until the end of the season.

One particular thought is that at Bolton he was making the best use of a limited group of players. Not many people have expressed this, but just now he may have exactly the same at Newcastle ?

I'm sick of the shit were being served up at the moment but I agree we might as well give him until the end of the season as getting rid now is going to do us no favours.

BS needs to get his head out of his own arse if he's to get the backing of the fans and salvage something from this season though, as on recent displays we could be dragged into a relegation battle.
