About: Game reviewed by MTV. ‘Left 4 Dead’ Is The Online Zombie Game That ‘Resident Evil: Outbreak’ Wanted To Be Posted by Patrick Klepek on May/13/2008 at 6:12 pm. At an Electronic Arts event last night, I touched one of my most desired games of 2008: “Left 4 Dead” from Valve and former “Counter-Strike” contributor Turtle Rock Studios. There’s nothing I love more than a good horror movie, especially those involving zombies. It’s as though “Left 4 Dead” was a game made just for me. Good horror games are few and far between. Good horror games involving group cooperation are fewer. Do they even exist? The last one I can remember is “Resident Evil: Outbreak” — and we all know how that one turned out. Thankfully, “Left 4 Dead” looks to be much, much better. It’s not even a fair comparison. Valve had four stations dedicated to showcasing a single level from “Left 4 Dead.” I’m told the level had been shown before, but it was all new to me. 1UP’s Scott Sharkey was seated to my right, but I didn’t know the other folks playing our demo, which presented our first problem (and one that wasn’t actually the game’s fault): communication. Or the lack thereof, really. “Left 4 Dead” is a game designed around cooperation. Talking to one another and coming up with effective strategies against the impending zombie hordes relies on communication. In a loud press event, without headphones or microphones available, that’s not possible. Our team was already at a disadvantage. It takes a little while to grasp the idea of cooperating in such a hostile environment. Your first instinct is to rush forward and start blasting, but “Left 4 Dead” has no problem tossing what seems like hundreds of zombies rushing at you simultaneously. These are not George A. Romero’s zombies; these are straight out of “28 Days Later;” they can run. You might not realize that being a little conservative, sticking together and watching each other’s back is crucial to survival — or you die pretty quickly. I did. Dying isn’t a one step process, though. Other players can revive you several times before you’re truly dead, but if you are mauled for too long, it’s truly game over. But, then again, not really. So long as the rest of the group makes it to the next checkpoint, you’re revived and back in action. Valve and Turtle Rock understand that while it’s unrealistic to “appear” again, it also wouldn’t be much fun to watch everyone else keep playing for another hour. Our group made it to the end of the second scenario. There were four scenarios available, but we didn’t survive to see the second half. Our demise came in a building full of pipes. An ammo table was at the front of the room, a button at the other. One of the developers warned that the moment that button is pressed “all hell breaks loose.” At this point, Sharkey started lobbing Molotov cocktails everywhere and turned the place into an inferno. There was so much fire, in fact, that no one could reach the button. Sharkey pressed forward through the flames and triggered the next event. Dozens and dozens of scrambling undead came pouring through the windows around us. We didn’t last long. But I was proud of myself. While I was the first one to die when we first jumped into “Left 4 Dead,” I was also the last one standing, guns blazing. Infected: * Witch * (image) Witches only want to be left alone so they can enjoy a good cry. They hate flashlights and loud noises, but what they hate more than anything is being shot at. If you hear the Witch's tell tale sobs, turn off your flashlights and try to sneak around her. If she starts to get angry, her growl will let you know she's close to attacking. * Boomer * (image) The fat, slow Boomer vomits a thick bile with two side effects: It blinds Survivors, and it attracts hordes of Infected. When Boomers are killed, they explode, showering bile on anyone nearby. Get close to Survivors when attacking. Even if you miss, they might not. * Smoker * (image) Smokers work best from an out-of-sight vantage point. Ensnaring Survivors from rooftops leaves them helpless and hanging—perfect targets for a pounce or vomit attack from a teammate. * Hunter * (image) Hunters are a mutated breed of zombie—faster, fiercer and far more dangerous than common Infected. Keep your ears perked—a shriek from the darkness means a Hunter is near, and ready to pounce in for the kill. * Tank * (image) Mutated through infection, the Tank's only strategy is brute force. Find the Survivors. Pummel them to death. Repeat. Healthy Survivors can run slightly faster than you. Try to trap them in tight areas, or use a thrown chunk of concrete to stun them. Four Survivors: * Louis * (image) Louis had been working up the courage to quit his job as Junior Systems Analyst at his company's IT department when a virus showed up and downsized the world. Now Louis has a new set of goals (live long enough to succeed) and a new set of tools (guns, sharp objects) to help him achieve them. With any luck, he'll figure out how the new management operates before they get a chance to murder him. * Francis * (image) Cocky, loud, and pretty sure he's indestructible, Francis acts like the zombie apocalypse is the world's biggest bar fight. When the virus hit, everybody else stockpiled food and looked for a place to hide. Francis found a gun and had some fun. No cops, no laws, no order—if it wasn't for all the zombies, he could almost get used to life like this. * Zoey * (image) After spending her first semester holed up in a dorm room watching old horror movies, Zoey was given a choice: Stop fooling around and get her grades up, or drop out. Now that the planet's overrun with murderous zombies, and all of her professors are dead, Zoey at least has the cold comfort that she's been studying up on the right subject after all. * Bill * (image) It took two eventful tours in Vietnam, a handful of medals, a knee full of shrapnel, and an honorable discharge before the unthinkable happened: Bill ran out of wars. But now an army of infected undead has declared war on humanity. After decades of aimless drifting and dead-end jobs, Bill's finally gotten back the only thing he ever wanted: an enemy to fight. Game Play: Ever wanted to take on legions of zombies, online with up to 4 friends, attempting to survive? Now you finally can, and without all those annoying puzzles that bog you down on Resident Evil. Take on forces of up to 200 zombies at any time, including various mutations, such as the "grunt," "boomer," "hunter," "smoker," "tank," and "witch." *image* If combat gets too close for a sniper rifle, feel free to use the alternate fire button AT ANY TIME to hit enemies with the back of your gun to knock them to the ground, or at the least, out of your way. *image* If you run out of health, you get the same "last stand" option, where you fall to the ground, immobile, and can only use your handguns to defend yourself until revived by one of your team. *image This post has been edited by Dominion on Nov 25 2008, 05:38 AM -------------------- |

I'll be buying the PC version of this at the weekend, I always wanted a game where you just wander around shooting zombies heads off.
