Finland floored by last-gasp Dzsudzsák goal
Published: Tuesday 12 October 2010, 19.15CET Finland 1-2 Hungary Balász Dzsudzsák struck a dramatic winner deep into added time in Helsinki as the visitors made it three victories from four Group E outings. Balász Dzsudzsák struck a dramatic winner four minutes into added time in Finland as Hungary made it three wins from four outings in Group E. Sándor Egervári's looked to have been denied when Mikael Forssell cancelled out Ádám Szalai's opening goal with time running out. Yet after surviving a major scare when substitute Shefki Kuqi fired narrowly wide the visitors broke on the counterattack and Dzsudzsák was on hand to made it 2-1 with virtually the last kick of the game. The openness with which the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier concluded was in contrast with the early stages as both sides struggled to warm to the freezing conditions at Helsinki's Olympic Stadium. The committed crowd had to wait until just before half-time for the first real chance when Mika Väyrynen found space 20 metres from goal and delivered a fierce shot that clipped the crossbar with keeper Gabor Király beaten. Having been called out of international retirement to cover for the injured Otto Fredrikson, Jussi Jääskeläinen had been anonymous at the other end and he was caught cold five minutes into the second period. An attack which started with Finland corner ended with Ádám Szalai, scorer of a hat-trick in Hungary's 8-0 win against San Marino on Friday, streaking clear of the defence. Jääskeläinen slipped, leaving the striker to roll into the open net. Finland were spurred into a response but only after the introduction of Alexei Eremenko Jr and Jari Litmanen midway through the half did they really threaten. Forssell and Daniel Sjölund squandered presentable chances before, five minutes before full time, Eremenko found the unmarked Forssell who made no mistake. Nor, though, did Dzsudzsák, leaving Finland without a point in three Group E outings. |

Faroe Islands 1-1 Northern Ireland
Some inspired goalkeeping meant Northern Ireland had to settle for a point having come from behind with Kyle Lafferty's equaliser. The Faroe Islands withstood a prolonged period of pressure from Northern Ireland to claim their first point in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group C. Having lost their four previous group fixtures, the Faroe Islands were grateful for the agility of 40-year-old goalkeeper Jákup Mikkelsen before Christian Lamhauge Holst shocked the visitors on the hour. Kyle Lafferty equalised 14 minutes from time but despite a late onslaught, Northern Ireland had to settle for a draw which leaves them on five points from three matches. Lafferty, one of two changes to the team which held Italy on Friday, drew the first of two impressive saves from Mikkelsen on 18 minutes with a dipping long-range shot. The Faroe Islands' only first-half effort of note came when Símun Samuelsen shot straight at Maik Taylor, after which Jonny Evans went close twice. Gareth McAuley then headed into the side netting as Northern Ireland finished the half in the ascendancy. The visitors were soon forcing the issue after the restart as well, and Steven Davis's measured pass enabled McGinn to round Mikkelsen only to hit the wrong side of the net. David Healy, on as a substitute, span on the edge of the area and drew another save from Mikkelsen, before Lafferty resumed his private battle with the keeper, who somehow clawed a powerful header away from the top corner. Northern Ireland were punished on the hour when Stephen Craigan's heavy touch allowed Daniel Udsen to steal in and feed Holst, who turned past Aaron Hughes and beat Taylor. Cue a period of sustained Northern Ireland pressure which paid off 14 minutes from time, Lafferty traversing across the face of the penalty area before his low shot went in off Mikkelsen's left-hand upright. Northern Ireland were unable to force a winner, though, and resume their campaign in Serbia on 25 March while the Faroe Islands do not play again until Slovenia and Estonia visit in June. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Azerbaijan 1-0 Turkey Turkish-based Rashad F Sadygov struck in the 38th minute to give Azerbaijan a memorable victory in Baku and their first points in Group A. Azerbaijan captain Rashad F Sadygov struck the decisive goal as Berti Vogts's side produced a surprise win against Turkey. Sadygov, who joined Turkish club Eskisehirspor in August, found the target on 38 minutes to give Azerbaijan their first points in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group A and their maiden victory in eight meetings with their visitors. Turkey, also beaten 3-0 in Germany on Friday, are grateful for the two wins in September that are still keep them in early contention. Following Azerbaijan's own 3-0 loss in Austria on Friday, Vogts made tactical changes with Rail Melikov and Elnur Allahverdiyev reverting to the full-back slots. He also deployed three strikers in the shape of Vugar Nadyrov, Farid Guliyev and Vagif Dzhavadov. Azerbaijan started brightly and Dzhavadov was sent clear in the ninth minute but shot wide. At the other end, Gökhan Gönül and Hamit Altıntop tested goalkeeper Kamran Agayev as Guus Hiddink's side began to take the initiative. Azerbaijan went ahead late in the half, though, Sadygov shooting in from the edge of the box following Mahir Shukurov's corner. Hiddink reacted after the break by introducing Nihat Kahveci and the new arrival swiftly came close on two occasions. Azerbaijan nearly had a second on 54 minutes, but Aleksandr Chertoganov – on for the injured Melikov – and Guliyev got in the way of each other's attempts. The tension mounted as Turkey took the game to their hosts, who responded with quick counterattacks. In two such moves, Ruslan Abushev pounced on a rebound but missed the open target and Nadyrov scrambled the ball wide with only Volkan Demirel to beat. Turkey continued to press but to no avail and they will need to revive their campaign at home to Austria on 29 March, when Azerbaijan visit Belgium. |

Genk striker Ogunjimi dazzles for Belgium
Published: Thursday 14 October 2010, 13.31CET KRC Genk's Belgium striker Marvin Ogunjimi scored three times in his first two international appearances but insisted: "I am not there yet, I have not proved anything." When opportunity knocks, do not knock it. Called up for the first time by Belgium coach Georges Leekens for the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Austria, KRC Genk striker Marvin Ogunjimi might have counted himself lucky to get a few minutes of football this week. As it was, with Romelu Lukaku withdrawn at half-time in Friday's Group A game in Kazakhstan, Ogunjimi was given a whole half to prove his worth. He promptly scored both of his side's goals in a 2-0 win. "This is a boyhood dream come true," he said. "I was happy just to be in the squad, but when you then get a full second half to prove yourself and score twice, that would be anyone's dream." Ogunjimi registered again on Tuesday when Belgium came within seconds of a 4-3 home win against Austria, only to concede an added-time equaliser. Had they held on, it would have been a sensational way for him to celebrate his 23rd birthday. "I got given a birthday cake in the afternoon but took it home with me – I didn't really have a party," he said. "On Sunday, Genk play a big match against Standard and there wasn't much to celebrate after that late goal." Born in Belgium to a Nigerian father and Belgian mother – and named in honour of singer Marvin Gaye – Ogunjimi might have opted to play for his parents' home country after being long-listed for the Super Eagles' FIFA World Cup squad. "If I had made the final selection, I would have certainly gone to the World Cup," he admitted. "However, I have no regrets about having decided to stick with Belgium now. I am proud to be Belgian." Back at home, Ogunjimi's partnership with Jelle Vossen has been crucial in sending Genk top of the Belgian First League – they have 15 top-flight goals between them this term. The pair combined well for Belgium too. Both Ogunjimi goals against Kazakhstan came from rebounds from Vossen shots, and he returned the favour by setting up his 21-year-old team-mate to score the opener against Austria, Vossen's first national-team goal. Genk coach Frank Vercauteren said: "It is lovely to see their success in the league reflected at internatonal level. They played really well. But the bar will be raised a little higher now. They have to keep their feet on the ground." Ogunjimi understands that. "Scoring three goals in one and a half internationals is great, but I am not there yet. I have not proved anything and must keep working hard." |

Spain Nearing Euro 2012 Qualification With Czech Republic & Lithuania Matches
Spain will play the Czech Republic and Lithuania as they resume their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign. Actually, March could see Spain reach Poland and Ukraine early. Spain seem to have lost the wonder touch that saw them reach the skies in 2008 and in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, the road to European glory in 2012 is long and we are only in its qualifying stages. The Spaniards may have struggled to defeat Colombia in February or failed to avoid humiliation against Portugal the other time, but the story in the Euro 2012 qualifiers is totally different. As Xavi very recently stated to downplay the importance of their bad results against the Portuguese or even the Argentines, "when Spain have to win, when there are points at stake, there is no failure". Indeed, La Furia Roja is building yet another perfect record: the Spaniards have played 3 Euro 2012 qualifying matches so far and they’ve won them all with a remarkable average of more than 3 goals per game. They are evidently the favourites in a section that involves the likes of Liechtenstein and Lithuania. Scotland and the Czech Republic cannot compare themselves to Spain on paper either; they are also behind Group I leaders Spain in reality. Spain's chances of getting the business done as quickly as possible are extremely bright. They just don’t have to throw away their 3-point and 5-point leads over the Czech Republic and Lithuania respectively. Spain could seal their qualification into the finals of Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine in the upcoming days. To achieve that, La Furia Roja need to make the most of their superiority against the Czech Republic and Lithuania on Friday and next Tuesday. Two wins out two and Euro 2012 tickets will be theirs. |

Luxembourg vs France: The Return Of Ribery And Evra – Good Or Bad For France?
Banned boys Patrice Evra and Franck Ribery are back among Les Bleus as Luxembourg vs France and France vs Croatia are set to take place. Is their return good or bad for French football? Coach Laurent has a distinctive way of working things out. For his first game in charge of Les Bleus, the ex-Bordeaux manager preferred not to call any of the 23 players that had participated in France’s shameful 2010 World Cup campaign. This was his way of giving collective punishment following the disgraceful incidents which had occurred within the country’s national football team in South Africa. However, Coach Laurent Blanc was quick to remind the public that resentment against any player wasn’t part of his emotions as his task is simply to build the best squad France can have. One of the 45-year-old manager’s philosophy is to blend youth with experience – which explains why the door for Ribery and Patrice Evra to return to their national duties was never closed. Evidently, though, the inclusion of Franck Ribery and Patrice Evra hasn’t come without controversy. According to France’s sports minister, Chantal Jouanno, bringing back the duo defiles Les Bleus’ dignity and ethics. In January this year, Jouanno made these strong statements as AFP reported: “Regardless of their qualities, it would be unacceptable to have them playing for France again. It’s impossible to disgrace our country and later pretend to play again in honour of France’s national football team. “It would be a fatal error to forget what happened [during the 2010 World Cup]. I believe there are other talented players who have not stained France’s image and who are waiting for us to give them the opportunity to write a new page in our history of football. We must be unbendable on this matter.” But Chantal Jouanno’s fight to keep Ribery and Patrice Evra away from France’s tricoloured jersey has been lost. The two experienced internationals have been called up by Coach Laurent Blanc and they are set to feature for Les Bleus against Luxembourg and Croatia in the next few days. “She can say what she wants, [Laurent] Blanc is the coach,” said Ribery in a press conference recently according to Reuters as he commentated on Chantal's Jouanno's opinion. In truth, who is right and who is wrong between France's sports minister Jouanno and Laurent Blanc? One thing which is certain is that this matter is a crucial issue. The outcome could be extremely positive or negative for France who seem to be in the last phase of their transition, from disgrace to greatness. Luxembourg vs France: Les Bleus' Team Roster Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris, Steve Mandanda, Cédric Carrasso Defenders: Anthony Réveillčre, Gaël Clichy, Philippe Mexčs, Adil Rami, Mamadou Sakho, Bacary Sagna, Patrice Evra, Laurent Koscielny Midfielders: Alou Diarra, Yohan Cabaye, Yoann Gourcuff, Yann M'Vila, Samir Nasri, Florent Malouda, Blaise Matuidi Forwards: Karim Benzema, Kevin Gameiro, Guillaume Hoarau, Jérémy Menez, Franck Ribéry, Loďc Rémy |
