Such a shame that this show was not airing when Wet-Girl was part of the Tavern. We could've used an inquisitive mind to pick her brain and find out everything about her. :cartman:

I'm a huge fan of comics, as you may have guessed. I lean more towards some Image stuff now (Walking Dead/SAGA/Manhattan Projects) though there's the odd few Marvel things I'm interested in. I write my own stuff (2 comics and another is in the planning stage) and also draw as and when I can. I love music, sci fi films. You name it, I'll like it (don't put that to the test, lol :lol3: )

Wait you write your own comics???!!?

Jeez well done IH. What are the comics about?

ironhand - October 9, 2013 05:56 PM (GMT)
Well, I try to :lol3: They're all written by me as I've took a step back on the art-side of things.

The first one is a superhero/ninja thing related to Heroes Alliance over on drunkduck (though that website is currently down) and is going to be drawn by CDMalcolm, who is astounding.

The second is a comic called Thrones and Dominions, based in the real world(ish) with an ageless detective who investigates the paranormal. That's drawn by the amazing Danny Ryba and the page I've seen is amazing so far. That's going to be a really cool book.

The last is one I'm planning called Tower and is set in the far future. It ranges from a simple escape-from-death to a revolution to an escape plan, so it's a fun ride. No artist of yet, it's still in planning stages but is nearly ready for scripting.

I've tried ranging my projects so they're all hitting a different genre, that's something which is really fun. Hopefully I hit the right 'notes with each project, too.

I was just about to say each story is totally different from the last. Are these all ongoing series or are some mini-series?

Where did you get your ideas from? Were you just sitting around your house oneday when inspiration suddenly hit? lol

So have these been published yet or are you still waiting for the art to come in before you can show anybody?

Sorry for all the questions lol

The Bujin (the ninja story which I totally forgot to name) is going to be around 12/13 issues for what could be the first story or for good. It's something where when we get to that end point whether we both as creators want to take it further or leave it. So there is an ending, but I can carry on from that end point if I want. The idea for this one stemmed straight out of the Heroes Alliance issue I wrote (I would show you all, but drunkduck is currently down) - I introduced a character there and immediately after leaving him to everyone else to play with, I decided I wanted to keep him for a bit longer. The story ideas came pretty quickly and I've sort of painted Japan as 'my corner' of the Heroes Alliance world, which is cool.

Thrones and Dominions focuses on one case per issue (occasionally maybe more) - and I've discussed with Danny Ryba that this can basically keep going for as long as we want. There is an end point, however, and I know how to get there and some of the beats along the way - but as every issue is different, I can do what I want. I think the second I begin to stop coming up with new, original ideas with the paranormal and start becoming stuck I'll take it to the end. But I've planned so many different stories that's a long way away yet. And I've only seen one black & white page so far - so the future's bright. This actually isn't my idea and comes from a guy called Jo Lipski ( http://abt-nihil.deviantart.com/ ) - he wrote a three page story a while back which I loved. I recently asked if I could take that idea and stem a series on it. Luckily, he said yes. He's given me a lot of freedom on it and is very supportive.

Tower is a finite story, but a long one. I want to make it the right pace so the main character's choices seem 'real' (even an unreal world) so it's another where I'll see along the way. I've got an idea that it might split into 3 key books, though. As for where this one came from, I have no idea, really. I'm pretty much writing what I've been seeing in my head. There's a few core ideas of people having a voice I wanted to write about but it's all just sort of a story I've seen and am showing you, which is fun.

I'd love for all to get published and would like them to be somewhere (most likely indy planet or part of the taverns own comic) but it's so early in production of all of them that it's not something we've looked into. I assume when the first issues are completed I'll talk to the artists about publishing and we'll go from there.

Sorry for such the long answer, I hope I haven't turned all the viewers away with that, lol (if I did, I wasn't joking when I said I knew where you lived :lol3: )

Miles_Warren - October 9, 2013 06:23 PM (GMT)
Don't worry about it IH. Long answers are always the best. I changed the channel while you were giving it but no worries :lol3: (I'm joking of course lol).

So for those who might be interested in creating a comic, could you tell them what kind of work goes into creating a comic? Is it just a matter of writing a story and finding an artist or is there more to it?

Where do you meet artists who want to draw your comic?

Don't worry, I think I changed the channel while I was giving it, too :lol3:

I usually find artists just through stuff I'm working on or the websites I'm on. It just so happens the two I am working with, when I emailed asking them what they were into I got ninjas (CDMalcolm) then dark/noir/paranormal things (Danny Ryba) so that was just by fate, really. But fun stuff, hopefully I keep them entertained.

A lot of work goes into it. I think getting to know the artist is the key - I always start by asking them what kind of stuff they like to draw. Then I'd base my comic around them (so maybe the idea wouldn't be there until this chat) - then you've got sketches and the writing part is either quick or hard - depending on what you're writing. The hard stuff pretty much falls to the artist, I must admit. They make it come alive - I just type away. But yeah, a lot of work has to go in. I think you should always have an idea of what's going to happen before it does - otherwise it starts becoming abit disjointed) But this all comes down to preference, someone else may (and probably will) hate my method - I just say go with the flow and enjoy it

And if you struggle finding an artist, kidnapping one always helps  [whutntme]

I actually discovered a song by Wye Oak called "Civilian" on The Walking Dead (series 2 somewhere) - and I really like that song. But I like loads of stuff, I lean towards the Oasis/Beatles area though. Those guys rock [happy]

Top 5 films is a toughy - just because there's so many I like. I honestly will sit and watch any film that is on, no matter how poor it is. I can't give you 5, but I'd say The Dark Knight's on there, as is The Avengers. Die Hard/Rocky/Alien - all the classics I love. Man, that's a tough one [thinking]

Those questions are mean, you find yourself forgetting all your best ones and just remember the worst [fistskaker]

Ironhand was my first ever character I created way back when I was a kid. He was the name I gave to one of my old toys who found himself a little comic. Thinking about, I love heroes with something on their hands. There was Ironhand, then I wrote Gauntlet a while back, then Talon. Maybe I'll come back to that with The Glove or something :lol3:

Oh there's no escaping from talking about New Girl. It will crop up at some stage in the interview lol

But first, for those who don't know you, can you tell us a little something about yourself? What hobbies you have etc?

comixkid2099 - October 11, 2013 06:09 PM (GMT)
Yes, I can do that. I'm somewhere in my mid-20s, I've been reading comics since I was 12, but I've been into superheroes since I was 5. Growing up, I watched the X-Men cartoon and the Batman cartoon. Somewhat less, I also watched Spider-Man and Superman. I grew up with the Tim Burton Batman movies, the Adam West Batman movie and all of that together basically permanently set me on a path to be a fan of the superhero genre, even if it took til I was 12 to start buying the comic books.

These days, I'm mostly into X-Men books (I have almost 3 full shelves of various X-books, and I'm still on a mad quest to catch 'em all. I'm like Ash Ketchum if he never left his house). But I am willing to read other stuff. I like sci fi and fantasy, and mostly stuff that can't "really" happen. But I also am very critical of storytelling and the like. I use what I like to think is my critical mind in making youtube videos where I discuss comic books and movies and tv shows and the like...

Miles_Warren - October 11, 2013 06:13 PM (GMT)

The Comixkid2099

Well, I had been doing written reviews here since 2007, I guess. I wasn't very good when I first started, lol (seriously, I was awful. Go take a look at my earliest reviews, and you'll probably vomit in your mouth a little). But I like to think that I got better over time.

And over time, I got to a point where it didn't seem anyone read my reviews. Part of it might've been that the Tavern had gone into a slowdown where fewer people posted, but I was looking for a way to get my reviews and opinions to a wider audience. And I had been following this youtube channel on youtube since 2010, and they did reviews and stuff, and they had a few thousand subscribers. While I don't think I'll get that many subscribers, I suspected there was at least more of an audience on youtube than there was here, even if I was starting from scratch.

And so I began making youtube videos about a year ago. Now I have 93 subscribers, and I am pretty happy with that. I will probably get more, but if I stopped getting more right here, I'd still be happy having almost 100.

Miles_Warren - October 11, 2013 06:23 PM (GMT)
Wow 93 subscribers? [happy] Congratulations comix. Well deserved. Hopefully you'll get a load more soon enough.

So, when you are reviewing a show or comic book, what are you most critical when it comes to storytelling?

And, as a follow-up, what do you give the most praise to? Do you have any preferences?

Miles_Warren - October 11, 2013 06:25 PM (GMT)
Here is some of comixkid's first attempts at reviewing. They are located right here at the Tavern

Comixkid's reviews

comixkid2099 - October 11, 2013 06:27 PM (GMT)
Most critical, I guess it depends on the story. I've been very critical of stories where the characters are unlikable for me, or where the characters don't seem to be going through any kind of meaningful character arc or change over the course of a story or series of stories. I used to be critical of stories that copy the plot of a previous story. And sometimes I still am. But I recognize now that just about every story owes something in it to a previous story. So I can't be TOO critical there.

Most praise given...hurm. That's harder, because I've noticed I'm much more on the negative side than the positive side. I get excited about things, but it's so much easier for me to complain about something than to say "this is why it's good." The few times I've pretty much given a completely positive review, the review has been shorter. But I feel like if the characters have gone through a satisfying arc of some kind, then I'll be happy.
