Title: Nintendo 3DS (Temp.)
Description: The successor to the DS.

Dan Andromeda - March 23, 2010 11:11 PM (GMT)
Nintendo will release an all-new DS by March next year. Called Nintendo 3DS, it promises to offer 3D effects without the need for glasses.

The 3DS is a proper successor to the hit DS console and will support backwards compatibility for DS and DSi software.

The official statement reads: "Nintendo will launch 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales
from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for
Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

"We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S."

Wow! So we'll find out more at E3. Do you like the sound of the new DS?

Under The Ashes - March 23, 2010 11:32 PM (GMT)
It will be interesting to see what Nintendo brings to the table.

Candy Man Criminal - March 23, 2010 11:33 PM (GMT)
oh nintendo, you so crazy <3

Phlakes - March 23, 2010 11:34 PM (GMT)
You mean 3DS, successor to the DSi XL, successor to the DSi, successor to the DS Lite, successor to the DS.

Under The Ashes - March 23, 2010 11:36 PM (GMT)
Don't forget the DSI XL.

I was just about to edit that in.

Under The Ashes - March 23, 2010 11:43 PM (GMT)
Well, you don't need to, because I'm just that awesome.

Syntax Man - March 24, 2010 12:06 AM (GMT)
as powerful as a gamecube eh?

now all they need is the appropriate number of buttons and a re-release campaign and I'd be sold hook line and sinker, as it stands I'm just really interested

It darn well better be 3D goggles, not some stupid "cross your eyes" crap. Hmm, maybe it could be viewing angle based...that's an interesting idea.

Also, I have one of these: http://www.iz3d.com -- I can already see any DirectX rendered games in stereoscopic 3D.

Under The Ashes - March 24, 2010 12:59 AM (GMT)
You couldn't take the extra time to make that a link? ugh.... Well, thats cool anyway. Good for you. Does it make gameplay any more interesting? Or does it make it confusing?

DeProgrammer - March 24, 2010 01:13 AM (GMT)
It's cool for a few minutes. It doesn't change gameplay much, although it made Batman: Arkham Asylum beautiful.

Zurginator - March 24, 2010 02:50 AM (GMT)
I'm not exactly sure how that will work without glasses...

Anyways, according to my sources in the hardware department, Nintendo ordered a couple hundred thousand Tegra 2 chips from Nvidia. AKA the "3DS" will be more powerful than the Wii. 3D, however, requires a massive amount of GPU processing, so all that gain will be taken back. :(

And De: B:AA was so awesome in 3D because Nvidia put a buttload of money into it for their own 3D system, which also helps yours. PhysX in B:AA are flipping sick. Real-time volumetric fog and cloth interactions.

Under The Ashes - March 24, 2010 05:03 AM (GMT)
Unreal Technology baby.

Actually that's Nvidia technology. :P

Unreal just happens to be one of the few engines that natively supports it, and only did so recently.

Under The Ashes - March 24, 2010 09:16 PM (GMT)
Yeah, but now it's in the UDK. Good for us.

Zurginator - March 28, 2010 03:58 AM (GMT)

Syntax Man - March 28, 2010 04:41 AM (GMT)
except thats a DSi what he has

Zurginator - March 28, 2010 05:00 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but we believe that's how it's going to work.

Pomegranate - March 28, 2010 05:29 AM (GMT)
that's a really innovative and awesome idea... i'll probably get that just cus its 3d :D

Funny thing is a fan came up with it, and now Nintendo is stealing the idea. xD

Syntax Man - March 28, 2010 04:22 PM (GMT)
oh you mean that guy who did it with the Wii?

Zurginator - March 28, 2010 05:00 PM (GMT)
That would be correct.

Is confused. Who is this man who made 3D with a Wii that you speak of?

Link?

He uses a PC so that he could program it, but the Wii could do it to, abit with worse graphics.

Ok, but what does that have to do with the N3DS? Nothing

The 3ds screen has filters on it and u can adjust the amount of 3D you want by move the right slider button the on the top screen panel. I had this on my other topic but I'm going to be lazy and not put anything up here.

CloudVaris - July 21, 2010 05:23 AM (GMT)
Yes. While that's immediately apparent to anyone who's looked up information about the 3DS more recently, it wasn't all that obvious four months ago before E3. At that point, it could've had a lot to do with the 3DS.
Back then, we were trying to figure out how they were going to do 3D on the DS without glasses. That was one answer.

Zurginator - July 21, 2010 06:15 AM (GMT)
Yeah, that was based on the info we had 4 months ago.

For all we knew, that WAS how it was happening.

Still don't quite understand how it does work. o_O

Not quite sure. From some of the discussion I've read about it, it seems to be rendering two images per "frame." I'm just not entirely sure I know how both images are being delivered <_<
It doesn't work when you're too close, too far, off to either side, or rotating it. I'm not sure if too high/low makes a difference.
So with those restrictions, maybe the two images are interleaved somehow? Each line of pixels angled so only one eye catches that individual line?

Edit: Or maybe the filters on the screens do the angling somehow, rather than the actual pixels. Might make more sense.

A parallax barrier is a barrier with slits in it for blocking the screen of certain pixels from certain viewing angles while a lenticular lens is a slightly curved lens to split up what pixel is displayed based on viewing angle.

Honestly you guys should check out wikipedia.

3ds => autostereoscopy => parallax barrier and lenticular lens.

Zurginator - July 21, 2010 01:13 PM (GMT)

Pretty much a more technical version of what Varis said using images from wikipedia, very good guess Varis.

Why thank you Pom, I like to think my intuition with these things is pretty sharp.

Why not, Zurg? o.O

My eyes aren't equal. If something uses different images for each eye (ex: 3D movies) it just looks bad to me.

huge media update for 3DS

So yeah there are those trailers, Nintendo's promising a launch in march 2011 for North America, the Japanese launch price for the thing is 25,000 yen, or roughly $300, but the Wii launched at 25,000 so odds are that the North American price point will be $250, not bad given the launch lineup.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D--Nintendo
Nintendogs & Cats--Nintendo
Pilotwings Resort (working title)--Nintendo
Pro Baseball Spirits--Konami
Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle--Level 5
Ridge Racer 3D--Namco Bandai
Samurai Warriors Chronicle--Tecmo Koei
Steel Diver--Nintendo
Super Monkey Ball (working title)--Sega
Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition--Capcom

According to Game Spot, so take it as you will.

Zurginator - September 30, 2010 01:44 AM (GMT)
I'm gonna say $300 will actually be the launch price.

Under The Ashes - September 30, 2010 01:27 PM (GMT)
I'm also expecting it to be really expensive. Probably because it's such advanced technology.
