What are your thoughts of the trade deadline today? Here's my list....
Winners 1) Dallas- Needed help up front to compete in west and got just that in Richards. 2) Capitals- WOW, was I impressed with them, they really making a run at it. Huet, cooke, Federov..well done. 3) Avs- Added depth to their D with Foote and Salei, and made that already very good offense better with that Forsberg guy. 4) Tampa Bay- Shed some salary with richards, tied up their franchise D, and got a potential number 1 goalie in smith. (and of course I traded him to cbj earlier in the season, grrr!) 5) Thrashers- got a lot for a guy they wouldnt have been able to resign Losers 1) Columbus- only a few games back of a playoff spot, playing really well, why in the world did they give up their best D and federov w/o getting anyone to help this year??? 2) Toronto- not fletchers fault here, bc all of his paleyrs refuse to waive their NTC. they did get some picks which they need but man, if they coulda just got tucker, sundin, and kubina to waive their ntc, they woulda been in very good shape. 3) Montreal- serioius contender just yesterday and rumored to go after hossa which woulda made them probably the favorite to come out of the east. Instead, they dont get hossa, dont get any help up front or on back end, and they lose their starting goalie and put their playoff hopes on a rookie. I will not say Pittsburgh is a winner YET, bc I dont see how they can sign hossa in the offseason. If he resigns there, than wow what a move, if he doesnt, they gave up a lot for a rental player which I dont think gets them out of the east this year anyway. I think the same for the sharks. They get campbell, fine, but he may not resign and they didnt add any help up front which is what they needed with marleau having such a terrible year. Wish my Rangers would have made more of a splash. I dont think its that bad though bc I dont think Ott or Mtl got much better if at all, and I think theyre the Rangers biggest competition. Your thoughts????? |

*Dallas would of been better off landing Olli IMO, more fits their needs. B Richards was better off in Columbus.
*Capitals getting Huet for just a second rounder is robbery, great move by them. Feds will be nice for them for the rest of the year, nothing to major thou. *Feds and Foote were no big loss for the CBJ, i thought they were more a winner (minus not landing Richards) *Montreal were the biggest losers IMO. how did they not pony up for Hossa? they have the prospect depth to pull it off EASILY. then they trade Huet for just a second rounder? they might of just dashed all Cup hopes today with that. Price is not Roy, dont see him taking them to far in the playoffs as a rookie as Roy did. *Toronto fucked themselves by handing out so many NTCs, they could of cleaned up today like bandits. *Pittsburgh i'm still skeptical about (being a Pens fan that i am) |

You can't really judge Toronto harshly based on what 'could have happened', but what did, and I think Fletcher did as much as he could with what he was given. He dealt away three players that the Leafs really didn't need, and got 4 picks in 2008 out of it. I'd call them winners, but maybe I'm biased. I think they'll trade Kubina in the offseason, which would be a great salary dump.
The Caps definitely won, but they really, really need to make the playoffs now, or they will be big-time losers this off-season. The Hawks didn't make any huge deals, but I really like them getting rid of Ruutu for Ladd. Ruutu wasn't ever going to get out from under the cloud of wasted potential and expectation here in Chicago, and I think Ladd is a good, young player that will mature along with the rest of the young Hawks. I think that trade was a win-win. I think the Rangers did the right thing in getting something for Montoya, as he was never going to do much of anything behind Lundqvist and his gigantic contract. He'll at least have a chance of stealing the job from Bryz out in Phoenix. As far as this MLH league goes, I think our Blue Jackets benefited tremendously from the trades of Huet and Smith. They suddenly have two number one goalies where before they had two backups. |

I was referring to the implications for Carey Price's play time now that Huet is gone |

These days, I'm actually a fan of both the Leafs and Hawks, which is OK, because they are in different conferences. Back in the Norris days, though, I chose the Leafs; I've followed them since the early Felix Potvin days. So, I consider myself a Leafs fan primarily, Hawks second. |
