| QUOTE (Twilight Mistress @ Apr 8 2008, 03:51 AM) | I actually cannot picture either Link or Zelda as the opposite gender... It just...doesn't fit. O.o
I personally, however, would love to see a heroine, such as Zelda, take the lead of the main role in the game. She would be so cool to use as a "ninja", jumping off walls and onto enemies to slay them with a brutal attack... Man that would be cool! |
Heh, I know it's a bit late to comment, BUT... x'''D I think it be slightly disturbing for Link and Zelda to change genders...It just doesn't fit the Zelda universe, imo. However (as I'm doing a comic about this with my two friends) I can see Link and Zelda switching their roles. You know...Zelda saving Hyrule while prince Link gets kidnapped or something like that. But I must admit it'd be quite interesting to see a female Link roaming about - it's not that difficult with that skirt *ahem* tunic of his. However...Zelda is too feminine. I just can't see a Zelda with pants and long hair with a crown on her - HIS head. But I guess you could picture Zelda as a male if Sheik would be considered as a man.

I don't think it's likely, but I don't think it'd hurt the franchise at all. Who doesn't want to see a sexy little blonde in a short tunic, wielding a sword and thwarting the evil that threatens Hyrule? A female Link could easily be pulled off.
As for a male Zelda? Why not? Where did the idea that princes are feminine come from? In fairytales (which TLoZ undoubtedly is), princes are handsome, dashing, charming men. Who says a male Zelda couldn't be in a similar situation as the female Zeldas are? Remember, in TP, Zelda was feminine pretty much in appearance. She was stoic and regal, so who says a male Zelda wouldn't be the same way? Perhaps he would have to surrender his kingdom just as TP's Zelda did. While Link would work as a female name as well, I'm sure that the "male Zelda" would have a different name.
Why couldn't the female save the male? It doesn't make the male any less masculine, and it doesn't make the female any less feminine. The hero doesn't always have to be a male. Female roles in videogames are becoming more and more heroic.. I mean, take Jill Valentine or Lara Croft- pretty kickass, are they not?
There's no reason a female couldn't be the hero in TLoZ. We have sexy, ass-whooping Gerudo women, so why not a Hylian woman? As long as she is a descendant of one of the many Knights of Hyrule, she could be the next hero. I think it'd be a great idea, but I don't think it's probable.

I've not been through these illustrious forums in forever, but this topic did catch my attention. It seems that we - in the age that we are in - question gender-switching more than we ever have before. Ever hear of the ballet "Swan Lake?" The professional ballet company in my town did a "gender-reversal" in "Swan Lake:" The swans were all men, and the prince was actually a princess (The outcome was the same though ) Nevertheless, it was very interesting to see a different take on a very old story. The Legend of Zelda is actually a very old story itself - princess is kidnapped, hero arises to save princess from evil monster, evil monster dies, princess and hero marry, etc. So, no, I don't think it would be creepy for Link to be "Zelda," and Zelda to be "Link." It would be interesting to see for sure, but I don't think that Nintendo would ever do it. Their culture doesn't seem to be as fascinated with gender-switching as our Western society is.

I actually came across an attempt at writing this concept that someone has done: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4253168/1/It's raised some questions and definately made me think more about this idea. I like her Prince: intelligent, strong, and passionate about serving his land. Like Zelda, but without losing his manliness. In a normal Zelda game I never get the the impression Link is particularily smart...he just kills things. I think this is a change for the better. As for the heroine, I wasn't thinking about the time period before this. For a girl in the medieval ages to throw off the expectations of womanhood ( marriage, children ) to pick up a sword would be most unusual..she'd likely get a lot of trouble about it. Normal Link just leaves his farm behind and such and gets trumpeted as a hero by everyone. Romance wise, while the author hasn't indicated any preference...again the thoughts are turning. Wouldn't a wise Prince get tired of the simpering female crowd that he would often encounter? Starry eyed girls who dream of fairy tales, gowns and titles etc. I would think a strong female heroine would catch his eye quickly for being so different. The heroine herself I can see being more ambivalent, perhaps initially having a prejudice against noblemen. But I think his bravery would change her mind. This author has even managed to put in an "alternate love interest" in a manner ( though I am not sure it was intentional ) in a village soldier who has trained the heroine. So again, I see huge potential in this concept.

Anyone heard of the Amazons from the legends of ancient Greece? Also its documented historical fact that Germanic and Celtic/Irish tribes from Roman times to the early Dark Ages had warrior women fighting side by side with the men. But I think around the time of the crusades, warrior women had completely went out of style or something like that. Anyway I like the concept of the warrior woman in the Zelda world with the Gerudos and the Zelda/Sheikah alter ego in OOT and Ashi from TP.

| QUOTE (gr33n_sl33ves @ Oct 6 2008, 06:16 PM) | And a male Zelda would be par for the course if there were a female Link, though I've seen quite a few people have male Link as a prince, and female Zelda as the peasant hero |
I really like the sound of that!!!
Zelda is a name of royalty, but is carried by a young, poor farmgirl... And Link, a name of nobility, carried by a noble, courageous (hot) prince. Zelda, who becomes a heroine, is admired by the prince, who ignores the other noble, rich and promiscuous women, and focusses the two maybe fall in love.
A totally different story, but would be a good fanfic, don't you think? I think I'll try it out someday!

I think that's what I like about the male Zelda/female Link idea...a noble, wise and handsome Prince has his heart captured by the commoner heroine's courage. Such huge romantic potential.
Of course, if it was Zelda as the heroine, she'd also add formidable intelligence to her role. So brave, beautiful AND smart. I like that too. I just have trouble imagining Link as the aristocratically raised Prince. Not that he couldn't become a Prince after marrying Princess Zelda in an ordinary Zelda story, but that's entirely different than being raised as royalty.
