Chapter One - Through the Passage of Time

A smile spread across her face as soon as she recognized the lone figure walking towards her, gazing into the same boyish face that she felt she had known for as long as she could remember. A rush of happiness washed over her body as she watched him approach. He was still clad in a green hat and tunic, bearing the appropriate weaponry items needed to defend against fiends. His golden hair was parted on both sides of his face and his cheek and jawbones had broadened to provide him with a more masculine appeal than before. But what she admired most about his appearance was that his handsome face had a soft and gentle look, his big, blue eyes gleaming with pride and the utmost determination. Her heart began to flutter with excitement.

“Zelda… It’s been a while.” He said in a deep, but soft voice. Now that he was standing right in front of her, she noticed that his body was also more defined with various muscle tones in certain areas. He was now a young man. But why did she take notice to such things?

Days went by as Link settled within the castle walls of Hyrule, weary from his long and treacherous journey. He was tired of traveling; it was a lonely expedition. The only thing that he had his mind set on now was making up for lost time. He had been far away for far too long. This was where he belonged and where he wanted to be.

Link wandered in the hallways, admiring the size and the various decorations while noting on the precise detail used for each object scattered throughout the rooms. Looking up he noticed that the ceiling reached up into an arc, covered with paintings of forests, lakes, rivers, oceans, and mountains enriched with the life of fairies and other mystical creatures, creatures that he had never seen before. Various chandeliers hung from the ceiling that bore hundreds of candles, illuminating the room with a bright and empowering light. The long red rug that was embroidered with sophisticated patterns in golden thread was plush under his feet as he ventured forward, unaware of where exactly it was leading him. May as well familiarize myself to this place, he thought passively. It wouldn’t benefit him on his part if he couldn’t find his way through the castle. Man… This is almost as bad as the Lost Woods! Room after room after room he continued to drag himself forward, fast approaching the borderline of frustration. The rooms were just never-ending! Finally he plopped down on the edge of a monumental fountain which stood almost twenty feet high above him. He caught only a glimpse of the sculpture out of the corner of his eye, which was that of the three goddesses holding the triforce above them in complete balance while water fell into the white, carved bowl beneath. Listening to the running water, Link closed his eyes feeling as though he was being pulled by an external force…

Splash! Link awoke with a sudden start, for a moment oblivious to the laughter ringing in the background. “What the…?”

“What on earth are you doing?” Zelda emerged from behind the monument covering her mouth with her hand in attempt to suppress her laughter, which only ended in failure. He frowned.

“It’s not funny!” He exclaimed sourly. She laughed even harder at how pitiful he looked, leaning backwards in a pool of water that was only two feet deep. How he could ever allow himself to fall in like that she didn’t know.

Without thinking he reached for her hand and pulled her in with him. She yelped with shock. “Hey!” Now it was his turn to laugh. After taking several seconds to process what happened, she joined in.

Soon after the laughter subsided between the two, Link found himself studying her face, so soft and beautiful with the most elegant features a girl could ever have. Her eyes shone like those of burning sapphires, holding within them great wisdom and strength. Locks of golden hair fell at the sides of her face while the rest flowed into a mid-length stream down her back, curling slightly at the ends. Her lips perfectly shaped into a warm smile, her graceful laughter like a song to his ears. Why hadn’t he taken notice to any of these things before? He wasn’t sure.

Then there was complete silence. Zelda shifted uncomfortably, slowly raising herself out of the water, or at least trying to. She slipped and fell on top of him, resulting in their faces being only inches apart. Her eyes gazed into his for only a split second before they widened with emabarrassment, driving her to quickly push herself away from him and out of the fountain. Flushed, she stared down at her dress and tried to smooth out the wrinkles, using it as an excuse not to look at him. She hadn’t the slightest clue what had happened. Without saying a word she huddled around and walked away, leaving a confused boy looking intently in her direction.

Night sprang quickly over Hyrule, so silently and unexpectedly like a predator stalking its prey. The day had already come and gone, now waiting to materialize after Night had begun to grow weary and tired. Silver moonlight fell through the narrow window of the guest room and flooded onto the floor, only able to penetrate through some of the darkness that lay within its reach. Link was on the bed staring up at the ceiling, both arms folded behind his head for support. His mind wandered, traveling back to his past childhood years that he had spent with Zelda.

“Take that!” She said between bursts of laughter. Brandishing her wooden sword she knocked his out of his hand and held the wooden blade poised and ready in front of him. She had defeated him once again!

“Ack! That’s not fair!” Link said, pouting. “How’d you learn those moves?” She smirked.

“Impa trained me. Just because I’m a princess doesn’t mean I’m helpless!”

“Heh! I can see that!” He smiled. “I’ll beat you someday!” She laughed again, picking up a handful of mud.

“In your dreams!” Zelda giggled as she threw the handful of mud in his direction, hitting him on the side of the head. Laughing, Link did the same and in just moments both were chasing each other around the meadow behind the castle, piles of mud flying through the air…

He sighed. Has it really been that long? He asked himself. Thinking back to when they were children, he remembered that Zelda was a girl that was really more of a tomboy. She couldn’t care less whether she was covered head to toe in dirt or not. She even practiced the ancient art of the Shiekah so that she would be able to protect herself when necessary. He couldn’t think back to any other girls that he knew that did all of that. On top of it all, she was very wise for her age, way beyond her years even. However, she never lost sight of fun. They always did things together; they went fishing, pulled pranks, went on mini adventures – he loved spending time with her. It was simply something that he looked forward to. Another sigh escaped his lips. Was she still the same? Had she changed while he was away? No… Of course not. She seemed wiser and stronger, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t the same person she always was. He smiled at the thought of her now, but really didn’t know why. He always viewed her as a best friend, someone he could really relate to. But now… Now something was different. His feelings seemed different. They were stronger and he seemed more drawn towards her. He was so confused… The next day he decided he would talk to her, ask how she felt about things. Maybe that would help steer him in the right direction. She was wise, after all.

Tossing and turning, tossing and turning. Not a wink of sleep. She usually didn’t have this much trouble. Her mind was so preoccupied with things that it could not surrender to unconsciousness of sleep. Link was one of the things that had been on her mind; she just couldn’t stop thinking about him since the moment he got there. What happened to him? Had he changed? Was he the same as she remembered him to be? Of course he was the same. She thought. He’s just… more attractive? She blushed. It was then that she came to a new realization; she was falling in love.
