Zelink Theme #27: Time/Becoming Older
Title: Between Times
Words: 135

It was a rather curious thing, going through time. On one side, Link was a child in the peaceful land of Hyrule. On the other side, Link was an adult, trying to save the land that once held much beauty and prosperity.

But when Link would go back or forward in time seven years, it was as though he wasn’t in one time or the other. In that brief moment where blue light surrounded Link, it was like the two times didn’t exist, like Link was between those two times.

Sometimes, Link would wonder if Zelda understood about this, but he would always end up shaking his head. Zelda didn’t have to worry about traveling between a time of peace and a time of suffering.

Still, Link thought, it would be nice if Zelda understood.

“Snap out of it! What are you doing lost in memories?!? Get yourself together! Getting that old ocarina back isn't gonna help us!!! Somebody! Anybody!!! Goddess of Time, help us please! We need more time!”
Tatl’s voice cut through his recollections of Zelda, and Link knew what he had to do. Bringing the Ocarina of Time to his lips (or what would count as lips for a Deku Scrub), he-

As the strange grinding noise filled the air, a large, blue box began to materialize in the center of the platform. With one last whoom the thing became solid, and from out of the box stepped a tall man in a brown suit, as well as a pretty blonde girl.
"And here we- Hello there, this doesn't seem to be Cardiff?" the man exclaimed, looking around curiously. His companion sighed and rolled her eyes, saying, "You've outdone yourself this time. We aren't even on Earth!"
"Of course we're on Earth! Just look at the- Oh."
The man had looked up into the sky, which was all but obscured by the large, grinning moon.
"That's downright scary, that is," the girl said, once she too spotted the moon.
"Yeah, obviously not Earth. I can't believe I miscalculated the landing so much!"
"I can."
"Oi, quiet you! Oh, don't mind us," the man said, catching sight of Link standing there, dumbfounded, "We'll just be on our way."
And so the strange pair returned to their blue box, and after a moment of grinding, it dematerialized back into wherever it had come from.
It left behind two very confused fairies, a bewildered Deku Scrub, a laughing Skull Kid, and a descending moon.

“Link...please give me the Ocarina of Time.”

Link stared at the Princess, his blue eyes never leaving her own. “Why do you want it Zelda?” he asked softly, his voice sounding almost childish.

Her eyes dimmed slightly in sadness. “I need to send you back, Link. You deserve a wonderful childhood – you deserve the childhood I took away from you. I need to make things right – I need to send you back.”

Link stepped back slightly, shaking his head. “No. I...I don’t want this Zelda,” he said, almost desperately.

Her eyes brimmed with tears. “I do not want it either, but I need to make things right. You need to go back. Link, please give me the Ocarina of Time,” she said, holding out her hand.

Link hesitated, but knew he had no choice. As the Hero of Time, it was his job to put Hyrule’s needs before his own. No matter how badly he wanted to stay, he had to make things right. Sighing, he gave Zelda the Ocarina.

She glanced up at him as she pulled it away from his grasp. “I’m so sorry Link,” she said softly, a lone tear trailing down her cheek as she lifted the Ocarina to her lips.

And in that instant, before she sent him back, Link kissed her.

Theme #27: Time/Becoming Older

How could Zelda have changed so easily right under Link’s eyes? The figure Link once knew was now that of a woman’s—curved, and shaped as if angels had carved her into her current form. Her face was the image of a seraph, with pure white skin that looked as smooth as porcelain. The golden hair that hung from her head trailed down her back and swept over her curved chest. Something was different in her eyes too—it was a vast sea with a wind that swept around and controlled the breath that poured out of Link’s mouth.

Link had just remembered that what seemed to be a moment ago, how he had felt when he saw this woman seven years before—she was just a girl then, and he was just a boy. The memories were so clear back then, and yet they seemed to be as vague as the complex emotions that swirled through his mind. Such strain, and yet such passion. How could his heart beat so loudly? One moment—a boy…and another—a man with his feelings pouring out of his eyes toward her. The sight of this woman, Zelda, was enough to silence Link. Just then he realized time had never stopped.

Title: Cannot Erase

Her soft, young voice is comforting to him as they sit together on the steps in the Castle Courtyard. He stares at her innocent wide eyed features, remembering the lovely young woman she will one day become, remembering with painful clarity the moments they shared.

Sometimes he wonders if it was all a dream, going through seven years worth of time, becoming an adult in body though his spirit was still that of a young child. Perhaps it could have all been nothing more than a nightmare; after all, he is the only one who can remember it. Well, that is not quite true; there is Navi. She traveled the river of time with him. But Navi is gone, his fairy companion returning to her forest home.

Sometimes Zelda asks him about the secrets he keeps, and he is not sure what to tell her. Deep inside, he wonders if some part of her knows the events that will never occur in this time and place, wonders if she knows of the woman she will be one day. It grieves him that she does not know of all that they went through together, that she does not remember all he did to protect her. She will never recall the relationship that began to blossom between them.

“Are you afraid of time?” she asks him one day. Her chin is resting in her hands, her forget-me-not blue eyes focused on him.

“Sometimes,” Link admits honestly. “Time can change everything.”

She ponders this for a moment before speaking slowly and thoughtfully. “Perhaps that is true. But I believe there are some things that time cannot erase.” Her small hand reaches out to clasp his, and suddenly, once more he sees the Princess before him seven years older, ancient wisdom and despair reflected along with some other emotion deep in her eyes.

He shivers and then it is over, and she is simply the young, carefree child once more, innocent and sweet. “Don’t worry,” she assures him cheerfully. “We have plenty of time together yet.”
