Zelink Theme #26: Corruption or Greed
Title: A Battle Against Yourself

The sounds of metal clashing echoed throughout the illusionary room of the Water Temple. Link had come face-to-face with his doppelganger, his evil self, his other half--Dark Link. And it didn’t look like one was going to triumph over the other any time soon.

“You’ve been thinking about Princess Zelda a lot lately, haven’t you?” Dark Link asked.

Link ignored the question (did Dark Link even expect an answer?) and tried again to strike him with the Master Sword. Once again, Dark Link blocked the attack.

“You’re just a pawn in the game, you know,” Dark Link continued. “Zelda doesn’t care about you. Once your mission is complete, Zelda will have no need for you.”

All through Dark Link’s little speech, Link had felt himself getting angrier. Zelda wasn’t like that!

Link tossed the Master Sword to the side and swung his fist toward Dark Link’s face. Dark Link defended himself effortlessly, a cruel smile spreading across his dark features.

He was getting to Link, and Dark Link knew it. After all, there was no greater enemy to face than yourself.

“Hey, Zelda?”
“Mm? Link?”
“Are you playing what I think you’re playing?”
“Yuh..”
“It seems to be making you quite inarticulate.”
“Bah! Away with ye!”
“Hah, okay, but I just wanted to know if you’re allowed to be playing that?”
“Why wouldn’t I be allowed? It’s still part of the family.”
“Yeah, but it’s not part of our franchise.”
“Oh for Din’s sake!” Zelda snapped, pausing her game, “Couldn’t you have bothered me when I wasn’t in the middle of a boss fight?! Look, we’re all from Nintendo, so I don’t think it really matters that I’m playing Metroid Prime: Corruption! If I was playing Halo 3, then you could worry!”
“You tell’em, sister!” Samus called from across the room, where she was playing Twilight Princess.
Link sighed. Nintendo girls were nuts.

He hates the demands on her time that other people make. No matter how hard she works, no matter how much of herself she sacrifices, there always to be something she hasn’t been able to get done.

Link is always grateful for the time she is able to spare for him, but sometimes he wants to be greedy and demand more. She always seems startled when he tries to make her stay longer; of course she is more than willing, but the selfless part of her cannot ignore the need of her people.

“Don’t you like being with me?”

Her eyes widen. “Of course I do!” she tells him, offended. “But you are not the only one in the kingdom. I can’t be selfish. . .”

His arm snakes around her small waist, pulling her back down beside him. “Stay with me,” he breaths in her ear.

Zelda shivers in the circle of his arms, her tiny hands braced against his chest. “When did you become so greedy?” she inquires breathlessly.

Link doesn’t even have to think about his answer. “Since I fell in love with you.”
