Under Attack (255 words) Link knew better than to presume he’d escape this horrible fate. It seemed his countenance was forever put to the test of late. It was bad enough that he had to be bothered at all hours of the day to get things done: the dungeons needed constant monitoring because they got infested with all kinds of nasty buggers, the castle guards needed constant overseeing because they were virtually unable to face danger, and then there were the varied and oft-alarming problems of the city people. And since none of those troublesome things were enough, he had to endure this torture at every turn of a corner. And Hyrule Castle had a lot of corners. It was probably because he’d once or twice --or mayhap more-- ‘explored the castle corners’ with Princess Zelda that he now had to endure this terrible result of their dallying. He stumbled backwards with a muffled ‘oomph’, winded by what felt like a bullet of bone and nerve to the stomach. He hardly had the time to recover his breath that he was falling against something much softer. And giggles. Oh, yes. The giggles. “Are you quite alright, dear?” Looking up into Princess Zelda’s benevolently smiling face, the hero couldn’t help but smile. “Darling, as much as it pains me to remind you of this, I have important work to do.” The monkey-like thing that was still clinging to the front of his shirt looked up, a cloud of blonde curls and two sharp sparkling blue eyes. “Mommy, we made a Daddy sandwich again!”

Theme #11: Sandwiches Title: Lunch Duty Words: 379
“I’m supposed to do what?” Link repeated, staring at Niko in shock.
“You heard me swabbie,” the small dirty pirate grunted from where he was working on the laundry. “The crew needs lunch! It’s your job to make it.”
A scowl creased the youth’s face and he folded his arms. “You’ve got to be kidding me. I can’t cook!”
Niko surveyed him grimly over the laundry tub. “You can either make lunch or work on Gonzo’s underpants.”
“Going, going!” he responded hastily, backing out of the room and heading for the galley.
Once he had stepped into the room, he stopped, staring around. Pots and pans hung gleaming from hooks over the counter, packaged food stored neatly on the shelves, and utensils he didn’t even have names for sparkling in their proper drawers.
Overwhelmed, Link sat down on a stool with a dazed thump, his head hitting the counter with a groan. “I’m doomed,” he moaned miserably.
An hour later, Tetra came down the stairs of the galley for an apple to hold her over until lunch, and was startled by the sight that met her eyes. “Link- what on earth. . .?” she stammered, stepping back.
“For the love of the Goddesses, don’t ask,” he sighed grumpily, staring down at his flour coated tunic and at the mess of food that covered the once sparkling counter space.
She gingerly picked her way over to him, fighting back a smile as she surveyed the damage. “I take it you were given lunch duty today?” When he nodded gloomily, she sighed. “Why didn’t you tell Niko you couldn’t cook?”
“Because he would have made me wash Gonzo’s underwear,” Link grumped, brushing the white powder from his clothing.
“That makes things clearer,” Tetra responded with a straight face. “Would you like some help?” The expression on his face said it all, and she couldn’t help but giggle. “Alright, get to work cleaning this mess up, and I’ll start on lunch. You can help when you’re done.”
He took the cloth she handed him, beginning to wipe down the counters as he watched her take a loaf of fresh bread down from one of the shelves. “What are we making, Princess?” Link asked curiously.
She smiled, tapping him on the nose. “Sandwiches.”

Title: You can't cook Word count: 223
”I can’t believe you are incapable of making a simple toasted sandwich.”
“Hey, it’s not my fault the oven exploded.”
“Link, just because your sandwich is burnt does not mean that the oven exploded.”
“But it did! I was watching it, I swear! One minute it was normal bread, and then it turned into that.”
“Link, bread cooked in ovens by people who can cook does not turn into that.”
“Exactly! The oven must have exploded! It’s the only explanation!”
“That, or you are just an incredibly terrible cook.”
“Hrmph.”
“Look, I appreciate the sentiment Link, but seriously, you have got to get some cooking lessons. When we finally scrub this concoction off the bench, I am finding somewhere for you to learn to cook. Preferably somewhere where the teachers have good patience and easily-cleaned benches.”
“It’s just a sandwich. Just because the oven exploded does not mean I do not know how to cook.”
“Link, for the last time the oven did not explode, and people who can cook don’t burn sandwiches. You can’t cook darling, just face it – all the marks on my kitchen bench are proof of it.”
“I don’t burn everything.”
“Honey, I wouldn’t be surprised if you burnt a salad.”
“But Zelda, salads don’t require cooking. How could I burn one?”
“I’m sure you’d find a way Link.”
