Zelda and Midna, Their connection *spoilerz!*

So, after beating TP yet again, I decided to come back and start this thread up. The connection between Zelda and Midna. How close do you think they are? What do you think of their bond? What do you believe happened when Zelda saved Midna's life? Lets talk about it here!

For some reason when I look at Zelda and Midna, I think of them as sisters. Their relationship had a huge boost when Zelda saved Midna's life. (It was then when she realized that she had to save the world of light as well, thus changing her feelings about her whole situation). But when Zelda gave up all that she had... (literally)... I think that was the time when they became "one", because how I looked at it later on, when Zelda finally became one with her own body again, she knew so much about Midna. "Such pains you have suffered". That was the quote she said. (It's kind of like when Colette became one with Martel in Tales of Symphonia for those of you who played it.) So I would say their connection is very deep... it's a beautiful relationship all right. Two sides of the same coin.

By the way, Alantie... that signature of yours... the picture in it looks awfully familiar to me. ^_~ Heehee.

Yes, I like the idea of Zelda and Midna as sisters. When Midna first brings Link to see Zelda, you can tell they're already quite familiar by the way they talk to each other. At times it seemed like Midna dislikes Zelda because of her selflesness, maybe perhaps because her own actions for a time were not quite so noble. But when Zelda saves her life, you can really see Midna's change. I loved how desperate she was to protect Zelda's body, such a beautiful sisterly friendship (though I know that somewhere out there, there are perverted fans who go OMG!!! MidnaxZelda!!!!) I believe during that time that Zelda's spirit was inside Midna, making their hearts as one for a time, so they were better able to understand and bond with each other. Ah, the friendship love! I'd love to see a fanart of Princess Zelda and human!Midna standing back to back. . . has anyone crafted such art yet?

I like your idea of thinking they're like sisters, HyruleMaster. I'd also have to agree with everything you said. Judging on how the scene where Zelda 'revives' Midna, She definatly changes her judgement.

However, I think of them as a similar bond, but not exactly quite like yours. Much more like Midna is the Twili's equivalent to Zelda. I guess you can say, like Kairi and Naminé of the Kingdom Hearts series.

From when I first started the game, I had this weird notion that Midna was like a mirror reflection of Zelda. She started off as something like an inverted reflection, what with her being self-serving, irresponsible, insulting, and willing to use people for her own ends. I'd like to point out that in Wind Waker, Tetra acted in a similar manner before she learned she was actually Princess Zelda. And much like how Tetra was transformed, both literally and figuratively, by this revelation, when Midna sees that Zelda would, and did willingly sacrifice herself for another, her view of those in the Light Realm drastically shifts. It also helped that she had been hanging out with Link for all that time, and saw that he was just as caring as Zelda. Point in fact, when she's "dying," she tells Link to go to Zelda so he could get his curse removed, not so that she could be saved. And when Zelda "gave up all she had," to save Midna, Midna yells at Link to stop Zelda, but then Zelda gives her this little smile, as if to say, "You can't stop me," but in an affectionate, loving way, rather than a condescending one. And in the end, Midna says that if all in Hyrule were like Zelda, then Hyrule would do alright

And I completely agree with Alantie about the perverted fans starting up ZeldaxMidna. When Midna turned to attack the Ganondorf possessed Zelda , but then she couldn't and instead touched Zelda's cheek, I swear I could hear the yuri fangirls/boys screaming, "Oh my god! Zelda and Midna are totally going to have lesbian sex now!!" x_x

gr33n_sl33ves, I COMPLETLY agree with everything you said. Midna and Zelda really are like mirror reflections of each other. Their actions, words, and deeds are so similiar its spooky. Its almost like Midna is Zelda's Nobody. . . *is thinking Kingdom Hearts*

Lol That's weird. I had the same impression after I beat the game. I felt that Midna was Zelda's shadow being. Both are princesses, and, if you look carefully enough, they have similar traits and facial features. Oh, and one other thing that gives it away is the picture in the little instruction booklet. Zelda and Midna face opposite directions away from one another, almost like a reflection of one another. Midna is Zelda's shadow form, much like Link as a wolf is his shadow form. If you think about it..it makes sense, being that the only entrance that leads to the shadow realm is through a mirror...

On a surface note, I look at Midna and Zelda as a yin and yang type relationship. One is not complete without the other, and they are truly two sides to one coin. Midna was a fully dynamic character (i.e. experienced character change, emotional change, and came to new conclusions) and we watched her develop into a caring, benevolent ruler that would eventually do her country justice.

Zelda on the other hand - we don't get as much about her. We have to take away from her brief screen moments as much as we can, and surprisingly, it's what is NOT said about her or what we DON'T see that speaks most strongly about what a solid person she is.

For instance, Zelda tells us what all took place when Zant arrived to take control of her kingdom. She does NOT tell us what she was going through emotionally at the time. Do you know what it takes to hand over a kingdom that has been in your family and been in your care for thousands of years? Zelda is virtually handing over her life when she surrenders to Zant - an act in and of itself that would take incredible mental power. Not only that, she is handing over her financial security. No doubt Zant raided the royal coffers as soon as he could find them, so Zelda has no way to feed herself or pay soldiers to keep her safe once the little money she has runs out. Also, Zelda could have stood and fought when Zant came for her surrender, but likely she would have lost her own life in the process and made Zant that much more unmerciful to her subjects after her death.

So, so far we have: extreme mental strength and logical thinking processes on Zelda's side.

Next up, we have her imprisonment in her own bedroom. It sounds a little cliche that she is "trapped in the highest tower of the highest part of the castle," but remember that the Zelda series is a big, fat fairytale. It is here that we see the possibility of Zelda's first negative character trait: self-indulgent angst. I mean, she is wrapped up in a black cloak that covers her whole head and she has wrapped her face up in a dark purple scarf. Maybe it was drafty and cold in the room, but if her clothes aren't a slight indication towards some self-pity, then we can take note of the fact that she is staring out her window at the rain when Midna and Link first arrive to see her.

Now to be fair, I haven't gone through what she went through. Zelda may have not eaten in a few days the time Midna and Link found her - I'm sure Zant looked at her as a kind of POW. Being hungry, I know, seems to make situations worse for a lot of people. But still, she controls her temper and emotions when she speaks to Link about the incidence and she even manages to look beyond her immediate situation to see that Link was at one point cruelly imprisoned. "I'm sorry," she says, and I imagine that if she had been in a little better mood that she would have given his leg a kiss.

I don't think I need to go back over the "death scene" in the middle of the game to say that she had an attitude of self-sacrifice. Before Midna and Link came back needing her help, she might have had a feeling that things were starting to look up, and when she saw that Midna was in the shape she was, she saw that something had to be done immediately or the "yin and yang relationship" would have been disturbed.

(Now here, it is my personal opinion that Zelda's body did indeed die when she handed her spirit over to Midna. My evidence is that when Link and Midna arrive in the throne room that Ganondorf occupies we see Zelda hanging above the throne. Her body is waving slightly from the air circulation in the room, but it is obvious that her body is NOT breathing. Zelda's spirit stands inside Midna's, and consequently, this means that the "yin and yang balance" has not been disturbed because Zelda's spirit has not "died and gone to heaven.")

All that aside! Zelda demonstrates deep self-sacrifice - that the grand scheme of life is bigger than she is, even though she is a full-blooded, ruling Royal.

We are also aware that she is probably pretty handy at the sword, and we know for sure that she is handy with the bow and arrow. I know, I know - she used Link's targeting for that, but in real life, she wouldn't have, so play along! Zelda was obviously an excellent sharpshooter and she wasn't going to let a piggish madman stop her from getting everything that had been taken from her back. It would have been dangerous, obviously. Link can get knocked off Epona and get injured, and in reality, the same could easily have happened to Zelda. And does she shirk her duty? I don't think so?

And finally, we come to the scene where she asks for Link's help in the middle of the shining lake. She demonstrates her courage again here by asking - she doesn't demand it "by Royal order." In fact, Zelda bows to Link to show that she is ready for a "yes" or "no" answer. That's big!

Okay, so to sum up: we have - extreme mental strength, good use of logic skills, rein on her temper and emotions, self-sacrificial willpower, the ability to see that she is not the most important person on the planet, sharpshooting power, humbleness and, of course, Wisdom. She is also aware that she must hold up her end of the "yin and yang relationship" between she and Midna.

Zelda may not have been fleshed out as much as we would have liked in TP, but what we take away from what we do not see and we do not hear is overwhelming.

That is SO true. My English teacher said that symbolism is a BIG part in stories. The Twilight MIRROR could mean that they are a reflection of each other. Also, all of my teachers said to read between the lines. I believe that sometimes it's what is not said that says the most.

Yeah. My really old english teacher says that there's this one thing called "double entendré". That is when one thing has two or more different meanings. So, there's more to Zelink and the connection between Zelda and Midna than what meets the eye.

The mirror of Twilight thing makes sense too.
