I wanted to respond to this ever since it was first posted, but I haven't brought myself around to reply until now. What I will say might come off ill with some people, but let me just say that it isn't my intention to upset anyone.
I agree with Ingie for the most part.
First of all, I'd like to say that a letter of protest made by a few people (out of the millions of Nintendo fans out there) probably won't amount to much. Your efforts are meritorious, because it shows just how much people truly love, and are willing to stand up, for something they believe in (which, in this case, is the romance between Zelda and link).
But let me remind you that the greatest part of the game is the game itself in it's entirety. What's the point of liking the relationship in a game if you don't like the actual game? If you ask me, I love the Zelda games for everything that it is, and the existence of Zelda and Link (and their relationship) is just one of many reasons.
If you're a fan of Zelda you should first, and foremost, be a fan because you like the game. That's what I think, anyway.
You also musn't forget that, while Nintendo is renown for being a very amenable company, it is just that. A company. A business that makes money off of their games. They have to be unbiased, and try to satisfy people with what works.
You heard it yourself from Aonuma that "[...]it's true that teenagers have these relationships -- and we would love if it could happen with the princess." Despite him liking the idea, however, as seen in Twilight Princess, it turned out much more differently than anyone thought.
*On a side note, let me remind you that [Spoiler:] Midna is a princess as well. [/spoiler] So, technically speaking, Nintendo Kept their word... just with that vague-ness they are so famed for.
Zelda games are all about vague-ness. Often times one ends up with more questions than answers, and it's this ambiguity that allows us to use our imaginations. Nintendo is big on letting their fans be creative (quite obviously, too), so why shouldn't we let our imaginations free? Everything really just depends on the perspective of how you take things, and how you feel about them. With a little imagination here, and a little love there, you have yourself a well developed obsession (not that that's a bad thing, I'm very much obsessed with Zelda myself XD).
Keep in mind, though, that "canon" restricts us, and ties us down to the boundaries of the game, no matter how loose said boundaries are... and that's where arguments sprout (whether it be debates on relationships, timelines, or something else).
So I'm all for the romance between the Princess and Hero, and in fact, I'm head over heels in love with the idea... but that doesn't stop me from understanding that there ARE other pairing possibilities, and that, though Zelink may be hinted at (as are many other shippings), it's never "canon" (except in a few games). I like it, and believe in it, because I want to.
While I also felt deprived of my usual Zelink-high in Twilight Princess, being that this is one of the few Zelda titles so closely envisioned next to Ocarina of Time, I kept an open mind for the most part...
I'm going to quote myself from ZeldaBlog:
| QUOTE | "I honestly have to say that the one and only reason Twilight Princess came off as “bad” was because I, myself, made it so.
My expectations soared above the clouds over the 3 year wait, and my analytical (and maybe even a little cynical) outlook on TP made me bitter throughout the entire game play, pointing out things I didn’t like, and things I wished there was more of. I overlooked all the new things added, and all the old things kept– and namely, I lost my positive perspective and love for Zelda as a whole.
While I can’t call any Zelda to be the BEST of the series, I can say that each is special in it’s own way. Twilight Princess, much like Ocarina of Time, is yet another stepping stone into the future of Zelda games. We should all face forward, and try not to be stuck on the past too much.
I realized when I played the game (TP) through a second time that playing a game with a positive outlook makes things just that much more fun. " |
It's not like Twilight Princess was completely devoid of Zelda and Link romance, too. All that depends is how deeply you believe in it, and from there, your world will be lit with optimism. And Hey, we shouldn't be too upset. The relationship between Link and Zelda is one of the most hinted in the Zelda games, anyway-- if you're looking for romance, and can't find much in Twilight Princess, just look to the other games. Adventures of Link, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, Minish Cap... the list goes on! Quite frankly, we're lucky, because we've got a lot more in-game-romance-time than most other shippings, and we shouldn't take that for granted. It's like a desert. You love it, and crave it, but can live a without it (for a while). So don't be angry! Just open your mind a bit, and use your heart and imagination! -- As for the "lack of development" on Zelda and Ganondorfs part? Here are my thoughts (so we don't go off topic).

| QUOTE (AmayaSaria @ Dec 18 2006, 01:49 AM) | | Link and Zelda really deserve to have their relationship to go further. Its not right for Nintendo to start something and never finish it. It makes me (and other people!) very angry. D:< I really really want Nintendo to give a sign, more hints, SOMETHING. Their love is so wonderful to not be noticed...Nintendo really needs to patch it up, and at least give us more. Its not fair that they give hints in all the other games, and leave us hardly any in TP. (or so I've heard, I haven't played it yet. ;_; ) |
I haven't played the game yet either, but I kinda spoiled myself about zelink in TP, watching youtube all the time. I love everything about the game, except for one thing. THE LACK OF ZELINK RELATIONSHIP!!! It drives me nuts, I feel like I want to pull my hair off sometimes!!! They kept giving deep hints that may be hard to spot about zelink!!!! Nintendo might to rethink about how they show relationships. And I don't want a simple smack on the cheeks and be done with it!!! There has to be more than signs, and way more hints. One thing they might want to try is a rivalry between two girls (maybe Illia and Zelda. Illia is a goner! Sorry Illia fans... but she's got little skills in battle) and then Link must say something about it. Or that might just ruin the plot. Well, they'll make up something, hopefully!!! + =
