Title: Windwaker Link and Zelda
gliderpilotgirl - October 23, 2007 12:46 AM (GMT)
So..I've seen alot of discussion about OoT/MM Link and Zelda and TP Zelda and such..but WW Link and Tetra need some love. Despite the kiddy graphics of WW..there was nothing kiddish about the relationship these two have. I won't spoil anything for anyone waiting for PH, but it's most definately pro-ZeLink. I'm playing it at the moment, and the ZeLink is refreshing after suffering through the Ilia stuff in TP.
What do you guys think of these two? The only conceivable competition I saw in WW was Medli...even with the whole falling into his arms, but Link didn't seem to return it all. The Fairy Queen hit on him..and he looked sheepish, only to be given a "in your dreams" look by the King of Red Lions.
I love how Tetra seems elusive and tough..yet you know she's got a tender side that Link can bring out, and nobody sees it but him. He is such a sweetheart in WW too..despite her taunting and such at the beginning..he still fell for her and went charging to her side when she was taken. I loved they let her actually fight beside him too..and how she caught him when he fell. When they departed..you totally knew he would stay beside her forever..not take off like OoT Link did. ( Though I think he came back)
These two are pushing for my fav ZeLink pairing, tied with the OoT/MM pair.
gr33n_sl33ves - October 26, 2007 08:10 AM (GMT)
WW definitely needs more love. It has a bad reputation because of its graphics, which is absurd because while cartoonish, they're none the less stunning. Hearing people say WW isn't a true Zelda game makes me want to punch them in the mouth :P
I absolutely adore how Link and Tetra's relationship developed. It wasn't all love at first sight, though they didn't hate each other either. At the start of the game, Tetra was all, "Whatever, I'm full of snark," whereas Link was, "WTF?!? Giant bird stole my sister!"
But as things progressed they softened up towards each other, culminating in the most satisfying and awesomtastic fight with Ganondorf to date, TP included.
All the little moments between these two are great, like when Tetra spots Link hiding in the bomb shop and she let's him have a head start back to Outset, and when she bursts into Ganny's chambers to help Link when he's facing off against him for the first time :D
gliderpilotgirl - October 26, 2007 06:08 PM (GMT)
Well not spoiling anything...I have since played farther in PH...and the ZeLink is truly the sweetest thing I have ever seen. You guys will not be let down by it!( unlike TP )
Woo! Go Link and Tetra.
I think the snark may have been Tetra trying to hide the fact she had feelings for Link...because she was afraid she's be less tough if she did or worse, that she'd get hurt
And I totally see Tetra having that human side that wishes for a hero..she's got the poster over her bed of the Hero...and then when she sees the Master Sword, she realizes who Link is and he's like "eh? You want to be nice to me NOW?"
All impressions I get of her..I'd definately call her the deepest Zelda so far, and her Link the sweetest.
Alantie - November 4, 2007 05:57 AM (GMT)
I'm going to come out and say it right now: I was not a fan of the graphics. *sweat*
However, that does not deter from the wonderfulness of Zelda and Link in this game. I did have a few issues with the plot (particularly the ending. . . but I will not comment more for fear of spoilers! *shakes fist at the King*) but besides that, I have to agree that there was a lot of depth here.
I think Zelda/Tetra took a big step in this game to trying to change Zelda's image. All that crap about Zelda being a weak defenseless chick who doesn't do anything? Ppph. So not true in this game- not even her haters can deny it. She's a pirate captain (which is oodles of cool) and she obviously is very brave, coming back to help Link fight Ganondorf at the Forsaken Fortress. She is also snarky, but I felt that was more a mask to hide her true feelings and an act for her pirate gang. Look how she behaves when she's alone with Link after they discover that she's Zelda- she becomes very soft and almost vulnerable, showing the tender side she's kept bottled up. ^_^ Also, this is the first time in the Zelda games (correct me if I'm wrong) that Zelda actually gets to fight along side Link against Ganondorf.
The Zelink hints in this too are incredible. Despite how she treats Link at times, you can see that she really and truly cares for him. I always remember her apologizing to him when she's revealed as the Princess, and how she goes to help hold him up after fighting Ganondorf. *squee*

I don't think Medli was a competition. It felt like she was more natural with Komali. And if she was competition, she didn't have a prayer because the LinkxZelda/Tetra was so overwhelming. XD
Yes! I would agree that the shipping in PH is quite overwhelming! They make it obvious that Tetra is Zelda... but if I go off on that, I'd be switching topics.
Zeruda - February 13, 2008 04:06 AM (GMT)
I love the TWW/PH shipping of Link and Zelda.. it's just too cute. But at the same time, it still perplexes me. Link is a youngin'- at the beginning, we find that boys are clad in green when they reach the age of the hero: "...It is the day that you become the same age as the young hero spoken of in all the legends..." So we know he's Young Link's age.
But here's what gets me: Mako: "Good work, Gonzo! Really! Just top notch! It's funny though... I'm thinking this is maybe the first time you've shown such wit... Such cunning... ...You know with your cunning and Miss Tetra's smarts... If you two got married and had a kid... ...That kid would be the greatest pirate to ever sail the seas! Yup! The greatest!" <---Gonzo is obviously older than both Link and Tetra, but he has a crush on her... and the other pirates know it. I doubt somebody his age would have a crush on a little kid, so I have this feeling that Tetra is older than Link... like maybe 12 or 13. DX
Sooo... yeah, there's obvious hints at the ZeLink shipping in TWW, and even moreso in PH, but the age throws me off.... I mean, it's okay to be interested in an older girl (cute, actually... much like Airbender: The Last Avatar), but I'd like to know Tetra's age. :x
gr33n_sl33ves - March 12, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
I tend to think that WW Link is around 12/13/14 years old, but this is mostly because of the whole puberty/transition from child to teen thing. As for Tetra, I'd always thought of her as 13 or 14, or just maybe pushing 15, but until we get some kind of official confirmation from Nintendo, we'll never know *hint hint Nintendo!*

You ever see that random quote given I believe by talking to Nudge? At the beginning right after Niko's test?
It's rather amusing: It goes something along the lines of:
" Guess what, Miss Tetra is actually 35!!....just kidding. But we are respect her for taking so much on at such a young age "
I'd guess Tetra is maybe 13-14, it could just be her maturity, but she strikes me as older than Link by a small amount. And I do think the Gonzo thing is disgusting.
WW Link is 12 by the Brawl trophy ( but those trophies have blatant mistakes in other places, so take that as you will )...I guess that pushes OoT Link's age up by the link the game made as well.

I guess it's a matter of perception...she just seemed flirty and pretty friendly with him...enough that people could concieve a "ship". He rescues her, has quite a bit of contact, etc. Other ships have been founded on less.
I agree the ZeLink was overwhelming however. I was confused as to whether Medli wanted Komali or not...she kept trying liken herself to his mother...more that type of relationship. But if Link and Tetra did have a third member to a triangle, I'd call Medli the most likely choice.
Alantie - May 1, 2008 06:23 AM (GMT)
I was pretty shocked myself to see that people actually shipped Medli/Link. I felt it was kind of pushing things a bit. While Medli is always very kind and courteous towards Link, she always seems concerned about Komali. She always finds some way to mention him or bring him up.
I think Medli's a bit older than Komali, the way Tetra is slightly older than Link, so I think that's why she sometimes feels as if she's mothering him. It's pretty conflicting- she relates her emotions to a mother's, but then turns around and talks about Komali in ways that are more personal. Asking Link to keep an eye on Komali, wanting Komali to remember her as a simple attendant, regretting that she can't help Komali have more confidence in himself. And I felt Komali was pretty much smitten with Medli. XD Bringing her that flower. . .
But yes, if there is a LT in WW, it's most likely Tetra/Link/Medli. Either that or Tetra/Link/Fairy Queen.
Twilight Mistress - May 1, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
I think it's obvious that Link loves/cares for Zelda in this game... There are A LOT of scenes that supports the two. Their actions towards one another indicate that there is something more. I won't get into details just yet, but really, it's just Link/Zelda in this one.

It's an "alternate" to Zelink, and that's all I can say. I don't think it's pushing it as much as say, Impa x Link but it definately looks weak up against ZeLink IMO. I feel WW was one game without much compromise in that area...little choice other than ZeLink, and they shamelessly hinted towards it. I'd love to see more games like that! As much as I want to see everyone happy, these shipping wars have lead to genuine animousity between fans.
I have no doubt that Komali was smitten with Medli, and she seemed to have a soft spot towards him, but I'm not sure if it was romantic. Either way, Tetra sails off with Link in the end, and Medli falls into the same trap as Malon, Ilia and Saria, IMO. She's "localized". It' s hard to imagine her outside of her environment. ( Dragon Roost and the Temple )
With the ZeLink ( to TM ) it can very subtle in some places, yet strong nonetheless. Take the scene where Link and Tetra look at each other for the first time...as with the rest of the game, I felt a strong "deja vu" feelings, as in " Haven't we met before?"...two soul mates recognizing each other. I loved the ending too...Link gets all mad when Ganondorf takes her...and he says something interesting: " I have taken your precious Princess!"....before that it had been, " You are surely the Hero of Time, reborn!" If nothing else..Ganondorf pretty much hinted how OoT Link felt about Zelda. One would think that Ganondorf would vividly remember the two in his first defeat when comparing to the new.

I agree, WW left little besides Zelink, and I would die of happiness if the other games would follow the trend more closely. I must admit I don't get involved with the Zelda fandom other than this board, simply because I don't want to argue with fans of other pairings, so I'm not quite certain how bad it is out there for the Zelinkers, Malinkers, and Midna/Link shippers.

It is hard to decide whether or not Medli's emotions toward Komali are romantic, though it's fairly certain she harbors strong emotions for him. Medli herself is often. . .oh, I suppose the best way to say it is wishy washy, or indecisive about her own emotions. She's a sweet girl, but she doesn't seem to have much confidence in herself or what she feels, if that makes sense. Not saying she's weak or anything, that's just how she seems to me. But yes, its hard to see Medli leaving either the Temple or Dragon Roost, and I can't see Link being tied down to either place. Like you said, WW shows him sailing off with Tetra.

Mwah, this is probably the thing I love best about WW, is that it strongly hints at the reincarnation <3. The strong sense that they have a deeper connection, a spiritual one that they recognize almost immediately. I particuarly love that part where they are rescuing Aryll and Tetra sees the Master Sword strapped onto his back, and it's almost as if she's having that deja vu, recognizing it somehow, though she can't explain how or why. There are so many scenes in WW that allude to OoT- like after Tetra is awakened as Zelda and Link turns to leave and she calls him back, appologizing- it's just so classical Zelda from OoT, appologizing to Link for everything he's been through.
And I agree, Ganondorf himself basically lays everything clear as day- of anyone, he's the one who would know best Link and Zelda from OoT, and would recognize them in their reincarnated state in WW. I know that the King says they are not, but I'm more inclinded to believe Ganondorf since he has the connection to the original Hero and Princess. And he does make it clear that he recognizes how Link and Zelda feel about each other with the 'your precious princess' statements.

Completely unrelated, but I think Midna/Link shippers should henceforth be known as Minkers, or those who ship Mink
Anyway, to the point:
When it comes to Medli, I never really saw her as a romantic rival. She was friendly and appreciative towards Link, which is unsurprising, really, because he helped her people and got her out of a nasty situation. When someone helps you out like that, you're bound to like that person. And in support of what Alantie was saying about her, the Medli figurine you can get in-game says that she's reliable, but she's spinning her wheels.

When Tetra's ship is anchored at Windfall Island, and you have free range of the ship, if you go into Tetra's room, you'll find she's got some pictures up on her walls. There's one of her mother, one of a map showing the locations of the three Goddess statues (connected by lines to form the Triforce), and a picture of the Hero of Time, as seen in the opening of the game. And that picture is hanging above her bed.
So she simply could have been recognizing Link and the Master Sword from that picture, but then the question would be why would she have a picture of the Hero of Time over her bed, unless it meant something to her?

There's so much proof in tWW for ZeLink, yet some people think it should be Medlixlink or MilaxLink (the used-to-be-rich girl in front of the stalls). I even have a quote from Beedle. "By the way Mr.Customer, are you perhaps aquainted with that adorable little pirate girl? You have a bashful look on your face Mr. Customer. You can't hide it from me! Yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk!" Then there's something interesting from Salvatore on Spectacle island. You have to shoot these barrels out at sea and when you shoot them all, he puts on a...Tetra mask thing and says this "You're a talented little kid...I like you." Could it be that the Nintendo people made Salvatore suggest that Tetra loves Link too? There are lots and lots of hints.

I am in fact one of those people. Dunno why. Just by the end of the game, I was more enamored to Link x Medli than I was to Link x Tetra (though this ship is a close second on my list of favorite WW ships)
Aside from what people said, I didn't see much in way of romance for Link and Tetra. They're both kids. Don't really think much would come of their relationship other than friendship now. But as they got older and settled into creating a new Hyrule, something could come of it.

Romance is often in the eye of the beholder. IMO, it was subtle, yet very strong..kind of a theme. I love Medli a great deal, but I didn't feel the "force of the game" behind her in a romantic manner, not when compared up against Tetra.
Another thing to talk about in WW: The game definately had some "themes" as I'd call it. Destiny being a huge one. I loved what that said for ZeLink though. We have the most different from the normal Zelda world possible, Link being some random island boy and Zelda an actual pirate. But it doesn't matter...they are still destined to fight together and IMO, to fall in love. ( I thought it was obvious )
I also liked that they threw the "Link must be related to the previous Hero" out the window though there is still debate on that one. ( Hero's family shield and all )
I'd take the KoRL's word over that though. It also fits in the "chosen" aspect that TP continued.
Saami - July 30, 2008 06:28 PM (GMT)
It wasn't. Not to me. Link is some random island boy. And Zelda is a pirate. And they're both getting their first tastes of real adventure. From the lighthearted nature of the game, I easily concluded that heavy romance (outside of a playful crush perhaps) was placed on the back burner, as opposed to Link meeting Zelda and BAM insta-love.
Most of my assumptions are based on their interactions with each other. Not what really on what people said. Nothing even remotely suggested to me that Link was interested in Tetra (and Medli) as nothing more than a friend who he is helping out during his adventure.
I do agree that destiny played a huge role in bringing Link and Zelda together (as it is apt to do). But I also believe that it is largely up to Link and Zelda, whether or not they fall in love, not destiny. And simply put, romance is the last thing on the mind of an eleven year old boy.

I'm not advocating heavy romance, merely puppy-love on Link's part, and admiration from Tetra/Zelda for his heroics. It's a start: I wouldn't expect them to have the relationship for instance that 17 year old TP Link clearly was starting with Ilia.
It depends on how you interpret their behavior. I see for instance Tetra's playfulness and almost tenderness towards Link as budding attraction. On Link's part there's how he brushes off Tetra's apology when she says she is sorry for what happened to him. She's been a jerk! He's rather sweet-spirited to begin with, but you can also take that as unconditional love. ( or like ) I will confess I'm drawing most of my evidence for Link returning Tetra's affections from PH as well: warn me now, who's going to be offended by spoilers?
I suppose. But they are destined to become at least close as they work together...that works well to lead into more. Romance and 11/12 year olds being incompatible? Nope. Not true at all. Rather, that's the age when feelings can start to surface. I have personal experience: my best friend for years suddenly started seeing hearts my direction when he was 12. I was of course too dense to see it, but my mom and his mom sure noticed. I've been around 10 year olds and heard them talk about "dating". They aren't thinking the mature love that an adult feels but attraction is very normal.
zelda-in-disguise - July 30, 2008 07:25 PM (GMT)
So true about the ten-year olds thing. It's okay that they "date" with a person they like, but in my third elementary school, every fifth grader was dating a new person every week. Why so early? Wait on that until you're older. Feelings at that age are great, but dating different people, even people you hate, every few days? Well, this isn't the place for that. Anyway, lots of affectionate feelings bloom around that age (although it hasn't happened to me so I only have proof from everyone around me).

Well, yeah...in that case they are dating for the sake "of status". It's a popularity thing vs actual feelings. I agree crushes can switch every couple of weeks too..there's nothing serious at that age. However, puppy love can be real cute, as in the case of WW Link. I've never had any doubt that when they grew up that it would turn to real love though...like what I saw develop between OoT Link and Zelda. They're sharing a great adventure, best friends...it's a classic set up.

But, they do look like they're ten year olds, so it's just maybe puppy love for them , but there's bound to be more later. In PH maybe???
And yeah, Tetra is very much like a tough gangster girl, hanging around with pirates who are either extra small and old, or big and gorilla-like. And yet, she is princess Zelda as well, making her everything a princess is, besides prissy, because Zelda ain' prissy at all, except in the cartoons.
GO WW! It does deserve more discussion.

Totally agree with you on the Medli part and the part about Link smacking into the walls. ^^ I laughed so hard and then I just wanted to hug him and make the pain go away. i'm telling you, it hurts when you smack into a wall...really bad... spoiler in PH there is more and the entire adventure started out as saving Tetra. Then later they said that you had to defeat the ghostship and then you had to defeat Bellum so that Tetra can be brought back to life before it's too late(she turned to stone) and to save the people from getting their life force sucked out. end spoiler Tetra's nice at times, she has a soft spot for Link and apologizes to him for all that's happened. About the hair...it does have a green-ish tint to it. Not TOTALLY green, but it's so blond that at times it looks like it's tinted with bright yellow-green.

Yeah, I think I prefer Zelda with either dirty blonde hair or light brown hair like in TP. She looks really pretty in TP. :yay:

| QUOTE (gliderpilotgirl @ Oct 23 2007, 12:46 AM) | The only conceivable competition I saw in WW was Medli...even with the whole falling into his arms, but Link didn't seem to return it all.
I don't think Medli is even competition! She's so in the sidelines! And link is really adorable in WW (though he is almost all the time), especially when he smacks his face on walls. I laugh my head off all the time when I see it!!! Hehehehe... hahahaha.... lol

I never made Medli out to be viable competition for Link's affections. I simply stated that when it came down to it, I preferred Link/Medli over Link/Tetra (Zelda).
I'm still not entirely convinced that romance was even on Link (or Tetra's) minds while they were out adventuring. As a matter of fact, I'm fairly certain that when he's fighting off Dark Nuts and Mighty Dark Nuts (or other various enemies), I think the last thing Link's thinking about is what Zelda's doing.

Well, of course it would be the last thing on his mind. He's going to die unless he concentrates. Anyway, it's probably affection/a crush. It'll probably bloom into something more as they get older.

Yeah, I think that they're a bit too young for romance and all that jazz. Anyway, I actually agree with liking Medli/Link over Tetra/Link, Saami. This might not make much sense, but I really son't like Tetra. She's kinda uncool.
And the Zelda in WW, is kinda dumbstruck all the time. I know that she never knew that she was Zelda and all, but come on! Just embrace reality and quit looking lost!!!
Anyway, in WW, I didn't find any romance between ANYBODY and Link, but I could change my mind any day now.
Oh yeah. I also believe that in PH or in WW, Zelda was the last thing on his mind. Usually, Link is facing bosses up to three times his tiny size!!! Usually, he's half-dead!

Well, you'd be dumbstruck too if you suddenly were told you were let's say the banished pirate from the third universe or something. Then all of a sudden, everything changes. one moment you know that you are an average person leading a life you shape, and the next you get told that you are the banished pirate from the third universe with proof that you ARE the banished etc. Sort of bewildering. Also, in the battle with Ganondorf, Zelda isn't bewildered at all, I think she accepted who she is during the time Link is awakening the sages and finding the triforce. In PH, Link actually started the whole adventure for Tetra. He was thinking about her ,and how to save her, a lot. spoiler>Then Oshus tells you that you have to vanquish the Ghost ship to save Tetra. Later, he says the whole thing about Bellum. <end spoiler. He's going through all the adventure for tetra and later for Oshus. Here's proof that Tetra likes link and vice versa: "By the way Mr.customer, are you perhaps aquainted with that adorable little pirate girl? You have a bashful look on your face Mr. customer. You can't hide it from me! Yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk!" -Beedle the shop ship owner, tWW. "Come save your precious Zelda." -Ganondorf, when he takes tetra/zelda to the top of the tower, tWW "You're a talented little kid...I like you." Salvatore as Tetra (he knows...). whenever a person in the game (Beedle, a teacher, a random person) says something about a relationship, you have to pay close attention to it. "I don't know how to say this...All that's happened to you and your poor sister. It's all beem my fault. I'm so sorry. *Link smiles and gives a short laugh of forgiveness* Link...Be careful...*Zelda holds her hands over her heart* The Tetra that shows is only her tough side. It protects her. She'll probably feel like people will think she is weak if she doesn't act tough. She's Zelda inside and deeply cares for her friends. it's like sheik. Tough on the outside, soft on the inside. Just another side of Zelda. I still feel that Link and Zelda/Tetra should be together.

You don't even have to be paying attention in PH: it's so obvious.
PH spoilers!!!!
Ciela the fairy tells Link at one point: "I can hear her, a girl and she's calling for your help!"
When Link finds Tetra finally, who's been turned to stone, he runs up to her and later tries to hold her hand. So sad, yet so cute.
When she awakens, she thanks Linebeck and Link, and it's so cute because Link's been just staring at her mesmerized from the floor the entire time. She reaches down to help him up ( The ending of OoT music plays ) and the screen focuses on their hands reaching, just about touching....and then she gets kidnapped.
When he rescues her, she waves at him from a small distance and he sighs in relief, than laughs and waves back.
So yeah, if WW wasn't enough, PH confirmed it.

Well, I don't have PH and I haven't been keeping tabs on it, so I've got no clue. And, I haven't played WW in over a year, which reminds me: I gotta play again! Gotta go find more clues about Zelink.
there's this one clue, with when Link finds his sister in the Forbidden Fortress, and Tetra takes for safet reasons. Tetra said that she'll take really good care of her, and that Lin kshouldn't worry at all. How sweet of her!

Being a tom boy doesn't excuse rude behavior. Tetra was rude. But she's also a pirate. So it wasn't like she was living by some high code of decency.

Nope, it doesn't. She was downright nasty to Link in the beginning too, and he didn't look too impressed. But I think it's fair to say she still plays by a set of rules and has a certain measure of honor. Once she felt she owed it to Link about his sister, she kept helping him out until he rescued her. Her conduct later as Zelda was later was impeccable...more what I'd expect from a Zelda.
