Now, I bet everyone has come across a Mary Sue at some point in the fanfiction community. For those of you who don't know what a Mary Sue is, read below for my definition of a Mary Sue:

A Mary Sue is an original female character that is extremely beautiful, gets the canon male character of her choice, has incredible powers, and has absolutely no flaws whatsoever. In short terms, Mary Sue is Little Miss Perfect, but she can also be the author (or Suethor) who has inserted herself into the universe of her choice.

Mary Sue usually has a hideously tragic past and will angst about it for the majority of the fanfic (or Suefic). Despite said tragic past, Mary Sue will be unaffected by it.

Sometimes in Suefics, Mary Sue will die a heroic/horrible/tragic/graphic death. If that happens, one of the two things will happen. Either the canon characters will mourn Mary Sue's death forever, or Mary Sue will be revived by the end of the Suefic.

Is anyone else sick of the Mary Sues that plague our beloved animes/mangas/books/cartoons/videogames/TV shows/comics? I know I am! Fanfiction isn't about plopping a perfect girl into a universe and hooking her up with the male character that you're currently obsessing over. It's about putting characters from canon into situations that they've never been in before, or digging deeper into a canon character's past, or giving a canon character a happier ending. If you call yourself a fan of any fictional world, you can do with respecting canon and characters.
