Title: Books
Description: for all of us bookworms out there!

Alantie - September 26, 2006 11:06 PM (GMT)
I know I can't be the only bookworm on the forum, so I'm creating this thread for us to talk about our favorite/least books, authors, recomandations and so on and so forth. I'm mainly a manga/fantasy/scifi/historical fiction kind of gal, though I will read other stuff!! Lets see, some of my favorite authors are:

Tamora Pierce
Gath Nix (I LOVE him!!! Woot for Mogget!! :yay: )
Robin Mckinley
Juliet Mariller

So, what are yours? Please share!

CrazygurlMadness - September 26, 2006 11:34 PM (GMT)
Meg Cabot and Anthony Horowitz are my faves as of now. B)

Dirty Harry - September 27, 2006 12:40 PM (GMT)
Robert Muchamore-Cherub series
Garth Nix-Keys of the Kingdom series
Isaac Asimov-Science fiction, and the Three Laws of Robotics (Loved I Robot and Bicentenial Man)
David and Leigh Eddings-The Dreamers Quadrology

Alantie - September 27, 2006 09:06 PM (GMT)
Ah, I love Meg Cabot too CM!!! :yay: Her Princess Diaries books are awesome, and I love the Mediator series!!

Oooh, you like Garth Nix too DH? *dances around happily* I've only read Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen, but I LOVE them. Don't you just adore Mogget? Hmmm, maybe I'll make a siggy for myself of him. . . I love his sarcastic attitude! ^_^

CrazygurlMadness - September 27, 2006 09:10 PM (GMT)
Actually, I stopped reading the Princess Diaries around the fourth book, but I read the Mediator series and all her adult novels (greatest stuff ever).

I especially like "Size 12 is Not Fat". Her best work, in my opinion. LOL

Alantie - September 27, 2006 09:36 PM (GMT)
Actually, I don't think I've ever read any of her adult books. *sweat* Would you mind giving me a list or recommending a few? I love her writing and I would love to devour more!

CrazygurlMadness - September 28, 2006 01:32 AM (GMT)
Here's her list. They're all good, so either one is great.

Boy Next Door
Boy Meets Girl
Every Boy's Got One
Queen of Babble
Size 12 Is Not Fat

Hope you find them. :)

Dirty Harry - September 28, 2006 01:12 PM (GMT)
Hmm...Asimov. CGM, have you read Asimov? He's SOOO GOOD! I mean, the exploration of a psychological setup that is supposedly more closer to the definition (Christian definition) of human is soo awesomely astounding!

It's like, imagine a race more human than humans. Robots, as according to Asimov's writings. Because they all serve and exist to further the existence of the humans, etc. It's really mind boggling. Also trying to read Allende. And Golding is pissing the shit out of me. Sorry.

Alantie - September 28, 2006 03:49 PM (GMT)
Ah, mucho thanks CM!! :D :glomp: I'm going to go to the library right after school and look for them!

Lets see, more favorites of mine. . .

J.R.R. Tolkien (the Master!! *bows*

J.K. Rowling (Even though 6 ticked me off >_<)

Terry Brooks If you have not read him and you like fantay, go read him now!!!!

CrazygurlMadness - September 28, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
JKR should give us more of Fred and George. They're like, my idols. XD

I liked Lord of the Flies (wicked Belzebub translation), DH. I had lots of fun analyzing that book, actually. The parallel with politics was amazing. Plus, I had fun hating Jack. RALPH POWER! GO BLONDIE AND DEMOCRACY! (Though I'll say, the lil'uns were SO ANNOYING AND STUPID. Even though they were a the personification of the foolish masses).

The religious analogy was sort of weird too, but I still liked Simon. He was a good guy. And so air-headed. :hearts:

Also, gotta love the Beast. Great parallel.

As for reading sci-fi, I know it might sound like a blasphemy, but I'm not into it at the moment. I used to be, but I've been into chick-lit for a while, lol. Too many cute boys to count.

Then again, my personal life has been turning into chick-lit recently, so I might take you up on the suggestion. Who knows? Maybe then my life will turn into a sci novel. Sweet.

^ I second that motion!

Speaking of books paralell with our own reality, if you want something that's depressingly accurate, you should try George Orwell's 1984. It's probably more relevant now than when it was written, which is kinda freaky.

I've actually been reading a lot of classical books lately, like Gone With The Wind and The Count of Monte Cristo, but I'll always have a special place in my heart for the Redwall books. They're like a guilty pleasure XD

That and Death Note :)

Alantie - September 28, 2006 08:58 PM (GMT)
Lol. Sounds like Fred and George should get their own books!

Ooh, I've never read the Count of Monte Cristo, but I loved both versions of the movie. I should think about picking it up, neh? I also like Ivanhoe. That's got everything you could ever want in a novel!

Ah, CM, I picked up the Boy Next Door from the library, and I'm gonna read it now!! Then I shall have to wait until the others come in. . . :(

What other kinds of Chick lit do you read? I've been trying to find some good ones. I need a break from my epic novels/series that I love reading :)

CrazygurlMadness - September 28, 2006 09:03 PM (GMT)
Well, so far, I read Sophie Kinsella, but frankly she just doesn't have the wit and charm and style of Meg Cabot. IMHO, at least.

Emerald_Eyes - September 30, 2006 07:38 AM (GMT)
OOOHHHH my favourite books hmmm:

Two weeks with the queen by Morris Glietzman!
I recommended this book to alot of friends and i am going to recommend it to you guys!!! go and read it it's a great read. Sad yet meaningfull. It's a childrens book which makes it UBER KOOL!!!

Death of an Ancient King by Laurent Gaude
This book is the First full on war book i have read! there's alot of blood and gore! esp family betrayal and deception!

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Gold
I love this book. Well if you loved the movie then im sure you will love the book. A very facinating culture.

Davinci Code by Dan Brown
I must say this was a very intense read lol not really. I learnt most of the things that were in the book, such as the paintings, in Art History. So nothing came to me as a surprise except where.......go and read it lol. But his other books are pretty much the same (Demons and Angel, Deception POint and Digital Fotress), they are all brainy thrillers which to me share similar plots....eh maybe it's just me!

To kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee
I read this book in 5th form. I have read this a million of times and i have only seen the movie once lol! i prefer the book! Go and read it!

CrazygurlMadness - September 30, 2006 03:46 PM (GMT)
In my English Lit class, we had to read Of Mice and Men. I kept imagining that George (not Lenny) was hot. It made the book a lot more fun, and so I actually enjoyed the read.

Even though the end...

gr33n_sl33ves - October 2, 2006 03:55 AM (GMT)
Yes, the ending of Of Mice and Men did suck the farts out of a dead goat >_<

CrazygurlMadness - October 3, 2006 12:17 AM (GMT)
Well, I was kind of glad that George was freed of Lenny's hold. Really. I mean, come on. I know it's not nice to mentally challenged people, but Lenny was really kind of scary.

I mean, he liked to pet dead mice.

Like, EEEEeeeeeeWWWwwww?!?!!!

Emerald_Eyes - October 3, 2006 04:01 AM (GMT)
OOHHHHH of mice and men sounds grossly interesting! lol!

Alantie - October 3, 2006 03:19 PM (GMT)
We were supposed to read the book, but we didn't have time, so we watched the movie instead <_< It was very touching. Though yeah, Lenny was a bit creepy.

Oh! Have you guys read any Amelia Atwater-Rhodes? The chick is a friggen genius!! I LOVE her books! Which is saying something, since I'm normally petrified of vampires. Her shapeshifter books are incredible too.

Mmm, CM, I'm loving Meg Cabot's adult books so far! I've read The Boy Next Door and Boy Meets Girl. She is such a talented author. *is filled with envy*

CrazygurlMadness - October 3, 2006 03:53 PM (GMT)
:link: I know. Cabot pwns.

Haven't heard of Rhodes, though. What genre does she write?

Alantie - October 4, 2006 08:54 PM (GMT)
Rhodes writes fantasy/horrer sort of stuff. Like, she writes about vampires, witches, shapeshifters, and vampire hunters. Though I just finished her newest book and wasn't exactly pleased by what she did <_< I never thought I'd see homosexualality from her. . . Anyway, she still writes beautifuly. I highly recommend her! My fav. books of hers are Shattered Mirror, Hawksong, Snakecharm, Falcondance, and Midnight Predetor. VERY good books ^_^

CrazygurlMadness - October 5, 2006 01:37 AM (GMT)
Okay. The minute I get... well, a minute, I'll check my local bookstore. Being in a francophone province, it's unlikely I'll find many english books elsewhere.

Paladin's Heart - October 5, 2006 01:53 AM (GMT)
I'm not much of a reader as much as I was when I was younger, but I really liked the Silverwing Trilogy by Kenneth Oppal. I didn't get to read one of his "newer" novels like Airbourne, but I liked the way he makes one long descriptive paragraph and sums it all into one little sentence.

gr33n_sl33ves - October 6, 2006 12:47 AM (GMT)
Watership Down by Richard Adams is another good one. He creates such an immersive society for his main characters that you sometimes almost forget that they're all rabbits

Alantie - October 6, 2006 03:53 PM (GMT)
I just finished reading Size 12, CM, and I LOVED it!!! Holy cow, it was incredible!!! ^_^ I cannot wait for more of the HEather Wells mysteries!! I just pray, that Heather ends up with Cooper. He is a sexy beast!!! *growls*

CrazygurlMadness - October 6, 2006 04:17 PM (GMT)
Yes. Cooper is a real studmuffin. Hopefully she won't end the series too fast, though. I love her 80% happy endings (things finish up well, but the guy is still roaming free).

Alantie - October 11, 2006 03:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I know what you mean! And while her endings sometimes drive me crazy, I still love them. Have you read her When Lightning Strikes series about the girl Jess who gets hit by lightning and then can find missing people? That guy Rob is a friggen hottie! :giggle: *cough*

Mmm, lets see. .. Oh! The Narnia books! I loved them as a kid, and I still do. They were probably my first fantasy books ever. My favorites in the series would probably be Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspean, and the Silver Chair.

gr33n_sl33ves - October 11, 2006 08:13 PM (GMT)
I think my first fantasy book was the Lord of the Rings. My dad read it to me when I was five XD

Dune is another good fantasy book. Well, it and it's sequels/prequels. Very well written.

CrazygurlMadness - October 12, 2006 01:18 AM (GMT)
I have to read Dune myself. Many hot and smart guys have suggested it to me. And what sort of illeterate person would I be if I did not listen to those studly friends of mine? :P

I didn't read Cabot's Where-R-U series, Alantie. I probably should, though. I'm sure they're not bad at all. ^^

Shini - October 18, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
I am actually in the middle of Watership Down right now.... got the urge to read it after I saw the origional 1970's movie...... that and Plague Dogs.....
OOOOOOooo
Neil Gaiman has got to be my fav author! Good Omens (co-authored with Terry Brooks) was great
Stephen King is good too, his Dark Tower series is great........ personally I liked it better than LoTR, but that's just me....
I also like the Sonja Blue series by Nancy A. Collins
so many books............. so little time...........

Alantie - October 18, 2006 09:40 PM (GMT)
Don't forget The Sight! ^_^ I just finished reading it, and I loved it!! I have to go buy my own copy now! The ending made me cry *sniffle*

Shini - October 19, 2006 12:19 AM (GMT)
yes, I loved that book ^_^

AmayaSaria - October 29, 2006 08:58 PM (GMT)
Aww man, I thought I posted here.

Any of you read Julie Garwood's books? She's a really good writer, from the one book I read from her.

Its a good book, its called Heartbreaker. I loved it a lot, and I'm still able to reread time to time, and STILL enjoy it! ^_^

Oh wow! My friend and I got that book yesterday! *laughs* It seemed really interesting. XD

I like:
Tamora Pierce
but most especially, DEAN KOONTZ. He's my favorite author.
I also love Llyod Alexander. He did the Book of Three series.

Shini - November 1, 2006 06:34 PM (GMT)
I like Dean Koontz's newest stuff, Odd Thomas is one of my favs ^_^

Alantie - November 1, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
Don't think I've read anything by him. . .

Anyone read the Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Mariller? They are FABULOUS books!

Hylian Princess - August 10, 2008 08:05 PM (GMT)
No, I haven't read those books, but my favorite authors are JK Rowling, Eric Walters, Avi, and I that's all I remember. I'm quite the bookworm, so there are quite a few authors.

zelda-in-disguise - August 11, 2008 04:51 PM (GMT)
Yay bookworms! Has anyone read "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok? It's my summer reading book and I thought it was good. There's also "Inkheart" and "Inkspell" by Cornelia Funke. It's an original concept.

Hylian Princess - August 18, 2008 01:32 PM (GMT)
I've heard of Inkspell and such, but I never had the time to try it out... Hmmm... Maybe I'll check out the Library soon?... Oh, and what genre is it???

Mandy - October 4, 2008 09:53 PM (GMT)
I think a great book series is the Earthsea cycle by Ursula LeGuin! I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasty books!

I'm also a sucker for the Narnia series (read it as a preteen) as well as the Prydain Chronicles. These are short books, but classics.
