i hate the necrons. i really do. they are a vanilla beatstick that, right out of the box, a rookie can play, and do well with. i was thinking that this might give the necron players fits. a semi-mech tau force with 4 squads of ten , an in a 'fish. 2 squads with rifles, and 2 squads with carbines. have maybe a nice fat squad of stealthers with a fusion gun, a squad of gundrones (in reserve for the Deepstrike) a couple of ionheads, a broadside team, and a pirahna.
move the rifle teams forward, and kick 'em out. nice lil firebase. the two squads with carbines...go forth fast and kill. i should be able to park the 'fish right near a necron warrior unit, and shoot the poop outta them, since the carb is an assault weapon. sure, i might take a hit or 2, but i have little worries about being charged, cuz the carbineers are behind the 'fish. if it gets too hairy for them, they can always hop back in, and scoot. all this while the fireteam is laying down long ranged hurting, the broadsides are knocking big shells downrange, the ionheads are eating destroyers, and the pirahna is harassing the monolith. if i can park enough shots on ...say the lord, eventually he'll hafta fail a save. it worked on a sisters canoness( with all those miserable faith points and stuff...uugh!) whataya think? |

I say good luck. Tau is maybe one of the best armies against necrons.
There is actually a fair amount written about this in the strategy guides, so check that out. It sounds like we play really similar armies. Whats your general thoughts on mech tau? -------------------- "The strength of a tradition lies in its adaptability to change."

i LOOOVE mech tau! it offers a sick amount of mobility for the Tau player to rapidly react to changes on a battlefield. if deepstrikers pop up somewhere in the backfield, it's a simple matter of mounting a squad back in the 'fish, and zipping them over to deal with 'em. combining rapidly moving troop carriers and gunships with the crisis suit dance usually gives lots of opponents fits of frustration.
and now the 'Fish can carry the SMS, it has earned the title of "craphammer", cuz it can now hammer the crap outta something, kick out troops, and stay unseen. i forgot to add something....the carbineers have emp grenades. if i get the opportunity, i'm gonna assault the monolith. auto hits with a chance to glance or penetrate would make ol' zombie-robot boy's jaw drop. then, go after his lord and tomb spider. those two units have priority status in my cadre's visor system. |

I have to agree with you: aside from the Space Marines the Necorn army is the only one which allows a rookie to use it, make some mistakes and win. Also it permits small sizes and adds some nasty rules to the basic troopers ( Tau have no special rules at all for their troops - merely a few cloaking technologies which are merely using the night fight rules at day ).
Did you know that one of my choices when starting a 40k army was Necrons? Aside from IG I also thought about getting those metal creeps in order to form up my 40k army. But I didn't like the lack in heavy support and the lack of variety in models ( there are necrons, destructors, swarms and the monolith - and some variations of each ). I figured out that they are pretty tough but expensive - perfect for newcomers. Your idea sounds interesting. I'll check it thoroughly and tell you what I think about it. But I can tell you this: it is good to have some tactic against these soul-less robo-freaks. -------------------- |

I'm suprised that you didn't take anyu pathfinders, they SHOULD be able to take down the lord.

I know a couple people who stared out with Necrons and we are finding that their lack of variety, especially in low point games, really puts off some new players.

Space Marines are suprisingly hard to play against crafty opponents, my friend learned it the hard way (we sure showed him, didnt we my precious?).

I disagree about saying necrons are easy for newbs to use. Yes against other newbs but if your decent you should be able to take a newb out however if he is using all the tactics that are avaliable it does make them alot harder however this is not genrally what new people do. I've seen 1,500pts Necron armys taken out in the first turn and that wasn't with luck (TBH the person had a crappy list) the thing is necrons have thier weakness like everyone else thats what you have got to exploit and if you don't well off course necrons are going to be harder. As for space marines being able to take it well I've beat chaos and regular space marines + varients more often than they have beat me and I've been wrecked by Imperial Guard and its not how my army is built it was to do with how good the players were (and in the case of 1 imperial guard battle I had lots of bad luck :'()
I also know someone who started with dark eldar and very soon he became good at beating people and DE r one of the hardest races to use but as he gets into close combat with the space marines and necrons you talk about his agnoisers tear them apart and his normal men do well 2 He even tank shocked a 50 man unit of conscripts and watched them piss themselves 2 death in the 1st or 2nd turn i forget now XD Although once against necrons he got wasted pretty bad but his close combat was amazing!!! 2 normal dark eldar warriors killed 38 Necron warriors before they were killed XD haha (No turn limit) -------------------- |

I once used the ultimate tactic on my friends necrons with my marines, but you could do it with tau. I deployed such an annoying force he gave up. I oculd do that by putting a railgun hammer head in a 500pts battle, Bwahahahahahaha

I've thought about that myself, take absolute minimum force so you can squeeze a heavy tank into a 500 point army with the idea that your opponent won't have any anti-armor in such a small game.
Shouldn't work as well vs Necrons though since ALL of their weapons can damage vehicles. -------------------- Once Upon A Midnight Dreary...

i've also had another idea for a squad......
the Ultimate Annoyance Team ..5 stealth suits w/ burst cannon ..1 stealth suit with fusion blaster ..All stealth suits with drone controllers and 2 gundrones! 27 shots, 12 of which twin-linked...and a decent anti-tank gun in the middle of the swarm. plenty of hit points to protect the suit pilots, which fits in with the tau art of war nicely, too. and, for fun...infiltrate. whattaya guys think? |

i've tried the Ultimate Annoyance squad...6 stealth suits w/ dron controllers and 12 gundrones.....OMG! the sheer, uncompromising volume of fire i was able to command was lovely. i used it to mow down a group of destroyers and a tomb spider. i would have won the day, but the necron player started to complain about "hip and back pain", so we had to call it. he was seriously getting trashed, tho.

Yeah, when ever I put the slam on somebody with that tactic, they always try to pull out of the game that way.
