I don't mean in the "spread 'em" standard deck that gerry thompson had a deck tech about. I mean in limited.
I don't remember the details (dan males aja buka2 archive draft recorder) but this morning I started a draft that went bad, but recovered quite nicely with my alternate plan. I started off with a first pick sphinx of jwar isle. and then got passed a vampire nighthawk 2nd pick, and then i took a heartstabber mosquito third pick. And that's where the black ended. So, I was kinda upset. Thinking that I wasted my early picks on black cards that probably wouldn't end up making the deck, I thought all hope was lost. So, I rare-drafted when I could, and just started picking everything that was blue because I thought it would be too late to switch colors. I thought that at least I could try winning by not getting color-screwed and playing mono-blue. Then, I noticed something. By the end of pack 1, I had 2 spreading seas in my picks. I thought to myself "I can just be close to mono-blue, cutting all the interesting blue, and just hope to color-screw everyone else on my way to victory". So, I continued rare-grabbing, getting 2 on-color fetch lands and a lotus cobra, while grabbing and wheeling all the spreading seas that I could, and still managed to make a deck that looked something like this: 12 island 3 swamp 1 jwar isle refuge 1 scalding tarn 1 misty rainforest 2 kraken hatchling 2 welkin tern 1 umara raptor 1 vampire nighthawk 2 windrider eel 1 living tsunami 2 merfolk seastalkers (combo with spreading seas! lol) 1 sphinx of jwar isle 1 heartstabber mosquito 5 spreading seas 2 into the roil 1 paralyzing grasp 1 whiplash trap 1 hideous end ...and somehow, this deck made it to the finals of an 8-4. round 1 was vs a b/g deck that had a lot of green creatures on the 2-slot (nissa's chosen, oran rief survivalist) so kraken hatchling + spreading seas on the forests bought enough time (and drew enough cards) for sphinx to take the win in game 1, and nighthawk to take the win in game 2. round 2 was vs a b/w deck that also became similarly color-screwed from my multiple spreading seas. merfolk seastalkers islandwalked for the win in one game, although I did lose one game here when kor skyfishers got him out of color-screw mode and he actually got to cast spells. round 3 was vs an R/u deck, so in game 1 my spreading seas actually got him OUT of color-screw, but I didn't side them out because he had spire barrage and things like shatterskull giant (2rr), and I liked spreading seas in the deck so far, even as a cycler. but then I lost the match. Would've been so awesome to win a draft using spreading seas. Oh well, maybe next time. =) |

it is really good - ive never been disappointed with it so far. blue is so narrow in the format that everybody only wants to draft either black, red, and white. (we all know green is bad)
p.s - do not play magic online with crappy connections. today i was in a draft, pack 3 where i got hideous end pick 1 and 2, and a nighthawk pick 3, and boom the internet crashed. there goes my 6 packs |
