Issue # 2: 2007’S Achievers & newsmakers
from Manila Bulletion online, Jan 12, 2008 (Saturday)

*snipped*
Most popular actor: John Lloyd Cruz

Never mind if "Maging Sino Ka Man Book 2" is not delivering the high ratings that is expected of it in Megamanila (where the ratings to advertisers matter). John Lloyd Cruz is still the most bankable actor we have this year. Proof is "One More Chance" which clobbered the film output of John Lloyd closest rival for this honor, Piolo Pascual in "Paano Kita Iibigin." We’ll see how these two top actors fare this year!

I think its true kc mskm2 medyo d naging maganda ang ang story before dahil most of the exposure ay sina AP & osang w/c is ayaw ng mga tao. Which lately medyo gumaganda na at sana tuloy tuloy na ito, so that the rating will go high. With jlc yah i agreed that his one of the bankable star together piolo and sam this year. But I want to hear news about bea also sana magkaroon din kayo.

Although the MSKM2 is not doing well in Manila but here in Toronto Lloydie's and Bea's fans here are still glued to our seats and still patiently watching it thumbsup.gif . We are so happy if the scenes is for the Lambingan Part of Eli and Jackie.that's the only thing that we are waiting for. We feel that the story should evolve around the LABERS and KISMETS, not the outsiders like Osang, Angelica and Philip plus Toni it's kinda overshadowing the ultimate 4 bidas...Anyways for me John Lloyd is still the best in acting because not only his eyes can act but he has substance, ang galing galing nya!!!! heartpump.gif heartpump.gif heartpump.gif

Too much work caused John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo to get sick
by Rose Garcia, Jan. 17, 2008
PEP online

user posted image

From the column of Mario E. Bautista, a respected movie critic and one of the members of URIAN.

THE WINNERS of the recent Metro Manila Film Festival were listed in this column yesterday, but here's our personal list of best films and performances so far. This is quite a good year as many films can be nominated for best picture. All of these are indie digital films and only two, "Katas ng Saudi" and "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo," are mainstream releases, both written and directed by Joey Reyes.

The digital films are:

"Pisay" by Auraeus Solito – A thoroughly engaging account of life inside the Philippine Science High School from the assassination of Ninoy Aquino to the fall of the Marcos regime, very crucial years in contemporary Philippine history, as told through the personal lives of eight students who lived through it.

"Tribu" – A searing portrait of life in the slums where young people vent their anger and desperation on killing each other as members of rival gangs.

"Confessional" – An experimental film with an innovative narrative technique about a documentarist who makes a film on the Sinulog Festival in Cebu and ends up with the confession of a corrupt politician who gets assassinated right in front of his camera.

"Endo" – A proletarian romance about two poor "end-of-contract" workers and how the temporary nature of their jobs affects their romance and their respective lives.

"Foster Child" – A day in the life of a professional foster mom who takes care of orphaned kids later adopted by foreigners.

"Still Life" – A film that contains valid discussions about art and life. It's about an artist who's about to lose his ability to paint and the young woman who he mysteriously crosses paths with in a deserted vacation house. The twist in the end will astound you.

"Kadin" – About a young boy's touching search for his missing goat filmed amidst the beauty of Sabtang Island in Batanes.

"Katas ng Saudi" – This is a mainstream movie that is presented more as a comedy but tackles some very serious problems about the lamentable effects of working abroad and missing on the growing up years of your own children.

"Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo" – Sequel to last year's very popular "Kasal, Kasal, Kasali" that shows the continuing story of a young married couple and the travails they go through in life.

In the acting categories, here are the top choices in the best supporting actor category:

Publio Briones as the corrupt mayor who makes a clean breast of all his sins in "Confessional," Ricky Davao as the weakling father in "Endo," Justin de Leon as the broken-hearted gay executive from Manila who falls in love with the keeper of a lighthouse in "Ang Lalaki sa Parola," Zanjoe Marudo as the zany small time crook who falls in love with a female cop in "You Got Me," Emilio Garcia as the silent prisoner who gets into a relationship with a younger man and Allan Paule as the pervert who preys on new jailbirds in "Selda," and Nash Aguas as the product of a rape who tries his best to gain the sympathy of the man he thinks is his father in "Angels."

The following are our bets in the best supporting actress category:

Eugene Domingo as the dedicated science teacher who speaks with a pronounced Southern accent in "Pisay," Dimples Romana as the oppressed wife who rebels against her chauvinist husband in "Chopsuey," Barbara Perez as the lonely spinster in "Gulong," Irma Adlawan as the ill-fated mother who loses her two sons and also loses her sanity on cam in "Ataul for Rent," Shamaine Buencamino as the very caring sister of an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in "Prinsesa," Francine Prieto as the mysterious woman who turns out to be a mere figment of a mad woman's imagination in "Silip," Gina Pareno as the flamboyant mother-in-law in "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo," and Anita Linda as the termagant neighbor who meets a fate she doesn't really deserve in the hands of a neighborhood thug in "Tambolista."

For best actor:

Jason Abalos as the caring son and brother whose love affairs are as transitory as his temporary jobs in "Endo," Ron Capinding as the painter about to lose his art due to a disease that maims his hands in "Still Life," Mark Cardona as the boy looking for his lost goat in "Kadin," John Lloyd Cruz as the engineer who has a hard time coping with a lost love in "One More Chance," Jinggoy Estrada as the OFW from Saudi who returns home after 10 years to find himself alienated from his own kids in "Katas ng Saudi," Romnick Sarmenta as another OFW from Saudi who chooses not to leave anymore for the sake of his only daughter in "Prinsesa," Ryan Agoncillo who gives a very relaxed portrayal of a harrassed husband and young dad in "Sakal," Joel Torre as the wily funeral parlor owner in "Ataul for Rent," Noni Buencamino as the aging closeted gay in "Hanggang Dito na Lamang," Cesar Montano as the Pinoy New Yorker grieving over the death of his American wife in the final episode of "Paraiso: Tatlong Kuwento ng Pangarap," Sid Lucero as the young prisoner who figures in an affair with the man who takes the blame for a crime he commits in "Selda," and Jiro Manio, Coco Martin, and Sid Lucero as the three partners in crime who commit a dastard deed and pay dearly for it in "Tambolista."

For best actress:

Cherry Pie Picache as the devoted foster mom and Eugene Domingo as the caring social worker in "Foster Child," Glaiza de Castro as the unwed teenaged mom who will change the most important man in her life forever in a way she has never imagined in "Still Life," Ina Feleo as the feisty contract worker who won't be distracted even by love in her ambition to work abroad in "Endo," Bea Alonzo as the architect who rebels from her boyfriend and finds her true self in "One More Chance," Jaclyn Jose as the physically and emotionally battered wife and make up artist in "Ataul for Rent," Judy Ann Santos as the struggling wife and young mother in "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo," Lorna Tolentino as the understanding and supportive wife of an OFW in "Katas ng Saudi."

We would also like to cite the fine ensemble acting of the cast members of two movies: The suicidal gang members in "Tribu" and the teenaged students with their own respective stories in "Pisay."

STARDOM IS HARD WORK!

These familiar faces show up on our TV screens, movie houses, and thousands of magazine covers. In the pantheon of modern-day gods, they’ve been idolized, immortalized, and become sources of inspiration to thousands of devoted fans.

But celebrity status did not come overnight. A life that sparkles with the glitz and glam was frequently earned by blood, sweat, and tears. Like the non-showbiz career people, the stars have paid their dues and keep on sharpening their skills. That’s how they can burn even brighter.

Once in a while, JobsDB.com will chat up-close and personal with these celebrities. Though not all of us have been bitten by the acting and concert bug, the values and lessons in their success stories are pretty universal and can prove to be inspirational.

John Lloyd Cruz: “Find your niche, learn what you are good at, and develop it! ”

Interview by Tinna S. Bonifacio

Philip Salvador, his co-star in Maging Sino Ka Man , called him “a brilliant actor; one of the best of his generation”. Intense and brooding, but immensely talented—that is John Lloyd Cruz. The 2007 Star Awards Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Gabriel ‘Eli’ Roxas in Maging Sino Ka Man has trod a long and difficult path to fame, and it’s only now that his sacrifices have finally started to pay off.

Getting his first break in ABS-CBN’s youth-oriented shows like Tabing Ilog , and graduating to more demanding dramatic parts like that of hotshot young lawyer Yuri Orbida in Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay (where his love team with Bea Alonzo was born), John Lloyd’s career is a lesson in patience and a living embodiment of the saying that “The best things come to those who wait.”

Here, John Lloyd shares the words he lives by and the secrets of his success.

You have been an actor for so long, playing many different roles. What is the most difficult thing about your job?

Ang pinakamahirap is that as an actor, you deal with emotions. Sometimes those emotions are very heavy, and it’s hard to let go even after you leave the set.

Do you sometimes feel that you’re misunderstood by people because of your job?

I get that a lot. Di ba nga, meron silang tinatawag na ‘John Lloyd mood’? When I’m on the set and I’m internalizing a role, there are times na hindi ako makausap . I take my work seriously.

Is that really part of your work as an actor?

I guess. It comes with the territory. It might sound like nagsusuplado na naman ako, but I don’t expect everyone to like me, or to understand the way I do things.

Where does your motivation for your work come from?

One thing’s for sure: I don’t work for the awards. The acting awards are just a bonus. If people recognize your craft, that’s the main thing. It should never be the case, otherwise you lose sight of the real reason for being here.

Your meteoric rise in the last few years has people calling you a big threat to the career of many of your fellow ABS-CBN talents, notably Piolo Pascual. How do you feel about that?

I’m just big; I’m not a threat. (Laughs). In all honesty, malayo pa ako sa naabot ni Piolo. He’s done a concert at Araneta Coliseum; I haven’t. I can’t even sing or dance. And seriously, mataas ang respeto ko kay Piolo, both as an actor and as a person. I don’t see myself as being in competition with him.

You have successfully established your own identity as an actor, apart from Piolo. How did you do that? What would you say is the secret of your success?

I think that what it boils down to is realizing and accepting what you can and can’t do. Piolo can sing; I can’t. But I can act. It’s important to find your niche, learn what you’re good at, and develop that.

Who are the people who have helped you succeed in your career?

A lot. Wala naman kasing perpektong artista. There is always something to learn from every person that you work with. Like in Maging Sino Ka Man , I’m privileged to work with really great actors like Tito Ipe (Philip Salvador) and Tito Boyet (Christopher de Leon). And I always value what I learn from them. Sometimes, I even learn just by observing them at work.

What advice would you give to those wanting to follow your footsteps in this business?

You have to have a conscious desire to keep wanting to be better. That’s why I never see myself as being in competition with other actors; I’m in competition with myself. Each day, you have to want to better yourself. That’s the only way to succeed.

Dina Bonnevie praises young actors John Lloyd Cruz and Dingdong Dantes
March 21, 2008 – 9:49 pm | by Chuva

Veteran actress Dina Bonnevie could not deny that she was impressed by two of the leading young actors today—John Lloyd Cruz and Dingdong Dantes.

During the press conference of Babangon Ako’t Dudurugin Kita last week, Dina was asked who she considers her top five local actors and actresses. She mentioned some big names in Philippine showbiz: Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, Gina Alajar, Lorna Tolentino, Amy Austria, Phillip Salvador, Edu Manzano, Christopher de Leon, Matt Ranillo… Dina paused abruptly as if she remembered something.

“Alam mo may isang young actor na talagang bilib ako sa pag-arte niya, that’s John Lloyd [Cruz].

“I cannot forget the scene… I mean, okey, mahusay si Piolo [Pascual] pero… No holds barred, ha, pero first time nangyari sa akin na nanonood ako ng TV na napaiyak ako ng isang young actor.”

It was John Lloyd who stole her attention. “But I cannot forget the scene na nanonood ako ng Maging Sino Ka Man Part 1.

Yun yung time na he wanted to tell Bea [Alonzo] na mahal niya pero hindi niya masabi. Hanggang sa umalis na siya [Bea] and then he was left na parang wala lang. Then, after a few minutes nag-breakdown siya. Alam mo, talagang umiyak ako the whole night. Talagang hindi na ako nakatulog.

“Sabi ko, ‘Ang galing ni John Lloyd. My God!’ I wasn’t even concentrating. I mean, hindi ako yung talagang nakababad doon, may ginagawa ako.

“Ang magaling na artista, nakikita mo what runs in the head. Alam mong pinipigil niya, na he’s trying to laugh at himself. Yun ang nakuha kong message, he’s trying to laugh at himself na, ‘Aha! I put a good act.’

“And after that, tuluy-tuloy na akong nanood ng [Maging Sino Ka Man].

Besides John Lloyd, Dina also sees a promising acting career for Dingdong Dantes, who clearly showed improvement in his acting skill in Marimar.

Dina remembered Dingdong during the early part of his career. She said, “Before kasi I used to say itong si Dingdong para itong anime, e, parang Japanese actor.

Ms. D. further compared the acting skills of Dingdong and John Lloyd. “Itong dalawang ‘to [John Lloyd and Dingdong], maglalaban itong dalawang ito.”

For me, John Lloyd is a young… kumbaga si Dingdong lumalabas na parang actor.

Of today’s young actresses, Dina said that Kristine Hermosa, Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis, Angel Locsin, and Marian Rivera would also do well in their acting careers.

Bea Alonzo explains 'natural' breast enhancement

Julie Bonifacio

Tuesday, May 13, 2008
09:50 AM

Rating

"Mamatay man ako, hindi ako nagpa-enhance. Hindi ko nga alam kung bakit lumaki."

AHHH... ESTROGEN.

I feel so good kasi siyempre kasama ko si John Lloyd sa movie.

'Tsaka parehong Star Cinema movie, so wala sa akin yun."

BEA VS. ROXANNE PART TWO?

"This will be my first horror film and first lead character ni Jake sa movies.

"But that was a joke. She's my friend now.

THREATENED BY KC? Threatened ba siya by KC?

"No, I just don't think so," sagot ni Bea. "May sarili siyang fans, may sarili din ako. I only compete with myself.

Parang I have nothing else to do And The City, ganun," pagtatapos ni Bea.

DETHRONING BOSSING. Naitanong din ng PEP kay John Lloyd kung ano naman ang masasabi niya na na-dethrone na niya ang isang malaking pangalan like Vic Sotto na for many years ay naghari-harian sa takilya.

"Ows?! Talaga?

Dahil for the first time, bibigyan naman si Vic ng parangal na All-Time Box-Office Actor.

"Wow!

"COOL OFF" PERIOD. Samantala, after ng success ng One More Chance, may plano palang paghiwalayin muna sila ni Bea as a love team.

Si Bea kasi ay magbibida sa Pinoy version ng Betty La Fea with a new leading man, habang si John Lloyd naman ay may movie na ginagawa under Star Cinema pa rin kunsaan, si Sarah Geronimo naman ang kanyang leading lady.

Ayon kay John Lloyd, nakaka-first shooting day pa lang daw sila ng movie.

Wala pa eh, nakaka-one day shoot pa lang kami."
