Lets see, I was in Naval Rotc I should know this hmmm lol

Tenders (Ships that offen have some supplies but is mainly a repair ship for ships that need to stay in a place during combat or war times or even peace time for readyness reasons or that the ship cant move because something critial for its proplosion ahs failed)
Crusiers(Are made as support units, and now have 2 classfications, ones for Antisubmarine warfare, and one for Antiair support, these vessels are offen medium size to small for ships anyway and are made to be quite fast to manuver postions necessary to cover large battle groups)
BattleShips(ones that offen pack the most punch, whether its Cruise Missles, or Big cannons(which isnt used much anymore and those that have the big Bores(what they call for the cannon's gun barrel) are rarely seen as they keep downsizing the cannons and using more convetional missles in its place, in due time such big guns on ships wont be much of a feature anymore.)
Submarines( used offen now a days to deploy nuclear arsenal well being conceled but small specialized subs are also made to deploy Seal teams and such, but they also have submarines which are called submarine hunters for the sole job of finding and termiating a submarine.)
Carrers(made for massive aerial support for a ground theater combat, or to provide cover or defence for a fleet or a ground segment)

Also if you find the ship's number, atleast for US Navy wise if it has a X in its name it means itx expermental like X4-429F etc. Anyway so yea happy.gif there you go

Also big edit note I forgot she was refering to battleships and not just ships in general..
But ususally they are classfied into groups based on power generation, example Steam ships Yes they used to use them, used steam, to power their engines and ship and such so hence a Steam battleship, there is also Gas Turbaine battle ships and Nuclear as well) My father was in the Navy he was a head engineer, he said they had a small primtive Air computer, which used air, they did this because if their power was to go out, a common occurance when he was off duty when other greesy monkeys get hold of the engineering area and screw things up or the fact that most engineering crews back then, didnt care or really didnt know to much of what they were doing would screw up. The air comptuer which did simple computing for them provided them such just incase the power went out. Though he never worked on the most advance vessles they did test a prototype on one of the ships he served on called the Phanix cannon, which when it used a laser to detect something close it would automatly fire at it. Well they used radio control planes which got targeted, welll the issue was it kept firing no matter what, to try to remove even the smallest peices of the plane in the air. Obivously they corrected this but its a system still used today aganst missles and close threats that require a eimliation.
