There now, her attention had been drawn to some splashing on the other side of the docks! "Arell!" Akina called to her, watching as her Dynasty Tat-Lung hesitated momentarily before looking over. Akina praised her "Good girl Arell" she tossed her a small stone, which plopped into the water and quickly sunk, sending ripples outward. Arell dove after it, reapearing moments later, looking at Akina with green eyes. Surely there would be more? But sadly no and once more she grew bored with watching the silent, still human and turned her attention to other things, but no sooner had she turned her body then Akina called out. 'Arell!" The Tat-Lung looked over at her and was rewarded with a gentle scale rub and a "Good girl Arell!"

The fish twirled in the shallows along the shore of the lake. Her fins twitched in the cool water and her golden eyes gleamed in the dim sunlight. It was a good day, gems to eat, sunlight to enjoy and… well the human wasn’t the best part of the day, but she was entertaining. Arell twisted quickly in the shallows, stirring up mud and silt with her large fins. Out of the kennel and in to the place where she could stretch and play. The pond in the kennel was rather cramped with that other… smaller inferior tat-lung. The Lapis. Pah. The Lapis might be her elder, but it hardly knew a thing about the world. It didn’t understand the workings of humans, didn’t care to understand the world. As long as it was fed, and had some company then the fish – for it didn’t deserve the name Tat-lung, was happy to remain in the pond, swimming in circles. The human said something above her, voice distorted by the water and she peaked up, golden eyes squinting.

The fish that shared her tank never seemed to grow. In some ways, Arell realized with a small start, she pitied it. It would never know the feeling of power that came with growing, the knowledge that one retained grew immensely. She snorted, now was not the time to think of the lesser ones, now was the time to work her brain and explore, release her curiosity. She had explored this lake many times before, but she restrained herself from doing too much in one day and leaving nothing new for the next outing. This time she dove deep, exploring the bottom nearest to where the human had released her. The muddy bottom was dark, with tufts of green spiny grass growing from its bottom. She brushed against the grass, scaring a small school of smaller fish that darted off into the murky gloom. She wondered about the human, if (when she grew) the human would run from her large size and might. She flicked her tail and rose to the surface, staring out at the human girl standing on the shore.

The human girl stood there, and when she saw Arell rise above the surface she shouted in her alien language and waved a stocky appendage in her direction. Shouting a hello, Arell supposed. Perhaps trying to get her to return. Ahhh but not just yet, she had a few things to investigate before she was ready to return to the shore. She dove, scaring another school of small fish. Numbering, perhaps, ten or so. She watched them go with amusement then dove a little further and began to brush her fins against the spiky grass, enjoying the feeling. She rolled in the grass and then swam away from the small patch, flitting to a rock that jutted from the dark lake bottom. She swam around and around the rock, studying it carefully. Patches of green algae grew on its rough surface; there were no distinguishing or interesting marks for her to study so she continued on her way.

It wasn’t much longer before Arell popped up to the surface again, having scoured the bottom of the lake in a ten foot radius from the rock. She had found nothing of interest, which the young Tat-Lung had found infuriatingly disappointing. She flicked her fins and drove herself towards the shallows of the shore. Akina stood there on the bank encouraging her forward with a shiny treat. Some sort of gem that was blue, like her own scales, Arell thought happily. She splashed into the shallows, belly scales grating against small pebbles and murky sand. But the shiny gem that Akina held out to her was worth a little mud marring her lovely blue and yellow belly scales. She grabbed hold of the shiny in her mouth and a thought flitted through her mind. Take it home, save it, show it to the Fish. But no, she was not that cruel and she was too greedy to save it for later. In mere moments the stone was gone and gentle hands were grazing over her scales, a soft voice murmured to her. Akina checking for injuries, just in case. The human seemed satisfied with what she saw and her voice took on a cherry tone.
