Interested in Mining?
Well, you're in Luck!

Now.. you may be wondering what the mines ARE... Well.. Long ago, the lab was built in this nice open meadow, with rolling hills all around.. what the lead scientist didn't know - was that those rolling hills contained a maze-like serries of catacombs and caves - hiding away within' it's belly a hoard of treasures!

So.. Now that those caves have been discovered (by complete accident mind you) - they've been altered - timbers installed, tracks laid.. for mining, to bring those treasures to light!

So... Now you may be wondering how the mines work... Well, for you, it's fairly simple...

The first thing you're going to want to do, is purchase some supplies at the "Underground".. a shop designed specifically for mining supplies... The Underground also comes in later, for selling your goods - should you find anything of value (if you want to sell it)... Now - this is important, the purchasing of tools.. Without tools, you can NOT mine! That's right.. you have to have at least one tool to mine! It doesn't really matter which one.. in fact, you can have one of each - but.. you must have at least one to participate - after all, you can't go into the dark and expect to dig rocks out with your bare hands, now can you?

The second thing you'll want to do... With at least one tool in hand, is to "head into the mines".. Now, to do this - you simply create a new thread somewhere in the Mines themselves... What you're going to do here, is you're going to follow the tracks laid out into the main shaft of the mine, and pick one of the unexplored catecombs or chambers (hall, shaft, etc) in the mine.. and claim it as your own... At least while you're in there, anyway.

*Note - Be SURE that in your FIRST post, you state ALL the items you are mining with - and all pets that accompany you.. You may post all of your mining famliars there, but you may only take up to two non-mining pets with you. At the bottom of EVERY post, say which pet(s) you are posting with!

Now that you've explored into your own area - and staked it as your own (created your own thread), you can begin mining.. To do this, you can.. uh.. well.. roleplay, really. Have fun - chip away at the earth.. let your pets cause havoc for you while you're in there.. or.. invite a friend! Friends often help while mining, and... you wouldn't want to go alone, now would you?

*Note - Friends play an important role.. Not only do YOUR posts count in the mine.. but your friend's posts count toward your mining too!... However, as you can only be in ONE place in the mines.. you can't have a mining spot AND visit someone else's at the same time - so be sure to give your friends some of the spoils when you're done mining!

Now.. what do you DO with your prizes?

Well.. Some prizes are.. not very special indeed.. Rocks, mostly.. Those should be discarded, unless you plan to keep them for.. sentimental purposes...

Some prizes are shiny, and quite valuable.. Sometimes, the "Underground" shop will purchase the gems from you, for a set price.. however, it may be best to keep your Gems - as other players may hold them in higher value, and.. it's rumored that some places, far beyond (hint) the reaches of the labs hold the Gems in very high value!

Some prizes are fossils... I wonder what you DO with a fossil, anyway...? For some reason, the scientists of MML have taken an interest in the fossils, and request that all fossil finds be documented in the Mining Catalogue.

Some prizes glimmer in the light, or even hold a light of their own.. These items are magical! Crystals... Magical Crystals are quite rare, and should be handled with care.. Though I'm sure you could sell them - you never know what use they will have later on... Crystals must be kept track of! Please keep the Crystal information updated in the Mining Catalogue.

Some prizes are even more special than Crystals! But not always as rare.. Mining Familiars! That's right, you can mine CREATURES out of the earth! Hm.. I wonder what creatures YOU can find..?

Want some HINTS?

* If you happen to find a Mining Familiar, be sure to take it with you on your next mining trip - they tend to know the mines better than most other creatures, and may even help you out! But be careful! You can only have one mining familiar in each thread! So if you bring one, tell your friends to leave theirs at home!

* Don't forget to purchase some tools! You never know when you'll need a full range of supplies!

So... as a general "sum up" of the mines...

1. Make sure you have at least one Tool (from the Underground) Highly suggested, but not required.
2. Create a thread for mining, with your Tools and up to two non-mining pets and one familiar in the first post.
3. Invite your friends, or play alone.. Have fun mining in the mines.
4. To play, just post!

For ALL your finds in the mines, you have to roleplay finding them (once a staff member shows them to you) to be able to take them home. With finding just rocks and gems (and the like), it's easy... but should you find a mining familiar, it will be a bit more difficult to convince it to be friendly and follow you home (or defeat it, should it try to eat you).

Some pets are simply too BIG to have with you in the mines.. here is a list of creatures that we know of so far, that are simply too large to take with you in the mines:

Equillion
Equillion do not like enclosed spaces, on top of their lack of agility in such enclosed spaces.. it takes a great deal of training to teach an equillion to go into a place like the mines willingly, and still - they're not very adept at it.. and keep in mind, if you go to a place that requires any sort of "crawling" - the equillion cannot travel with you!

Wiurns
Wiurns are simply too large to fit into the caverns below the earth - they don't fit!

Golossle
Golossle, like Wiurns - are simply too big to fit into the mines.. unless, of course, you plan on causing a cave-in.. if, that is, you can't even get the golossle through the "door" in the first place.

Gallor
Gallor are afraid of the enclosed spaces, much like equillion - but with training, can venture into the mines.. at least, it's not an issue of agility in enclosed spaces, as they have the agility of a cat - but training one to tolerate the mines might take a bit of work.

Thundergug
Cave-in much? For a creature that shakes the earth when it walks, perhaps it's not a good idea to take it into the mines, yes? Especially with it's bulk - it might just get stuck down there!

Pliathor
Although there are water-channels throughout the mines, where you can take various aquatic creatures (such as seryn), the pliathor are simply too large to take into the mines with you.

Other such large creatures, such as chiryma, estharne, salaves, seekers, etc.. though you can take them to the mines with you - please consider size.. a human has a hard enough time in several areas of the mines - as they can become quite cramped down there.. so taking larger pets might not always be the best of ideas... As a general note - a pet that is "human sized or smaller" - might be the best bet..

*final note*
We will not force you to "not use" your pets.. if you really wish to take your golossle down to the mines with you, you may - but logic notes that you would not be able to.. please, for consistancy, try to use pets that would make sense - though there is no "cut and dry" rule about it.

Do you have a special creature or item... that has sockets - for gems or crystals to go?

Well - if you happen to have one of those special items or creatures, then ONE time, and ONE time only - you can socket them, permenantly altering the creature (or item) with the stone..

Please keep in mind, that filling in a socket is non-reversable, and will cause you to loose the gem in question.

Current list of "things" that can be socketed:
QUOTE
Gargoyles

To actually go about "socketing" something that has a socket - please head on over to the Socketing thread in the Rules board of MML.

Choose wisely!!
