The method’s life expectancy was not too long, for no more than three cubes later the drake’s maw was making odd motions as if he was trying to will some life back into the increasing numbness that chewing upon ice brought. Which was just as well, the sphinx wasn’t about to give him too many more, but the breach of their endeavour was passed – the drake had had contact with the cold and some experience with it. Time was at hand to ante it up.

But not by too much.

One of the other merchants had given her a blanket which seemed to hold a special kind of thread. He swore that anything wrapped inside it would stay as cold as the ice cubes in the other container, provided the cloth was kept in a cool place to begin with. The blanket was not at all as agile as most of its kind, and a closer inspection proved there to be a fair more wire and flakes of metal among the thread than usual.

Light enough to use, yet not heavy enough to be considered armour, she supposed, ever wondering how a metallic thread so fine could even be made.

A fair amount of folding and rolling ingenuity had to be done before the cloth finally fit into the ice cube container and was left to sit there for the ten minutes which followed. As Cathŕn was more placid by now, having spent a fair amount of his otherwise boundless energy, the sphinx used the chance to lightly keep him in a hold with her legs, while she pried open his mouth and inspected for any injuries. There were worse ways to become wounded than through ice cubes, but with his water affinity, one could never be too sure, even if said affinity wasn’t an elemental one. But no sores became visible and no ice bits hat cut into any gums, at worst the breath being simply appalling, and so she let him free again.

The blanket roll was removed from the metallic cylinder and she fluffed it out a bit, before finally covering the drake with it. Cathŕn took objection and squirmed out, leading to a bit of figuring to go on, before he was recaptured and sat into her lap, the blanket wrapped about him. A few minutes, and then he was warmed up with a woollen one, while the metal-threaded returned to be cooled, only to be repeated some time later again.

Obviously, this part of the lesson was not the one the drake found himself appreciating, as any warm-blooded animal was quite fond of heat, rather than cold.

But his age and his size made it no easy feat to resist, despite his tendency to not give in for the longest of times. His claws and his teeth were dull, but they still made their best effort at digging thin grooves into the leather bindings. For a day, it was enough, as any bit of energy play between hot and cold was sure to make the drake more receptacle towards catching a sniffle of varying sort if done too much at once. In part why, once they packed their things for the day, the drake’s treatment back home was a nice short warm bath and healthy bit of vitamins to go along with his food (half of which Cathŕn managed to spot and throw up, as usual).

That was promptly followed by a few days of rest and, more importantly, allowing the drake to forget the discomfort of the incident as much as possible, before at the start of the second week the two arrived right back at the Park. The drake managed to be rather oblivious to the blanket and other assortment of things the sphinx brought with her, rather preferring to pre-occupy himself with the notion of running around in free space and actual fresh air.

A fairer fortune of the day was the semi-cloudless sky, making it warmer in sunlight and cooler in the shade. Much as the previous times before, the sphinx eventually coaxed and coerced the drakeling to the shade of their lot’s tree, unfurling the metal-thread blanket from its container. With the drake snuggly wrapped inside of it, they sat for a few minutes, Cathŕn in lap, ‘til the drake’s objections became too much and he was released.

“If you’re not happy about this, wait until winter comes and you want a swim..” the sphinx smirked, watching him roll around in the grass as if cold skin was something you can rub off of you.

But eventually, when the sunlight had done its work and the drake was back to normal, the process was repeated again, albeit to much objection.. Another thing the blanket proved to be useful for was a shield against his claws and teeth, as if very thin, very miniature chain mail. Beyond that, the drake’s scaling form was by no means as rugged as skin was, making him quite the slippery target eventually.

A few tries of this in the ensuing hours grew more tiredly for the sphinx than the sarane, who seemed almost to forget it had happened only a few moments after. Admittedly, there was much in the world to explore, not to mention the sheer sensory overload from the shifting weather and.. well.. outside in general.

You truly cant appreciate the scent of a wild flower until you’ve never actually known it to exist before..

For a bit of a break, the sphinx soon tucked the blanket away again, letting Cathŕn bathe in the sunlight to regain that body temperature, minute as it was. As he was doing so, the bottom of the container was turned upside down and a few more ice cubed tumbled out to fog up as soon as the warmer air hit them.

Taking a page from the merchants, these the sphinx had made on her own in-between their little rest at home. Rather than just simple meat, the water of the cubes was mixed with fat and carrion blood from the fresh treat inside of it.

Heck, the bright red tone of the ice made it a tempting treat for even the mammalian, if she weren’t more selective as to how cooked her meat would have to be before eating. Her kind was used to making due with almost minimal provisions, but that didn’t mean they ate like animals..

Throwing the first cube to the drake, it slid across the grass and bumped to a stop at Cathŕn’s nose, sending yellow eyes to shoot open in alarm. The drakeling’s head cocked upward and he immediately hissed – the usual reaction to encountering anything new. Much like his incidents with the blanket, his mind wasn’t able to work out that these cube things were familiar somehow, certainly not helped by the fact that these were red.

But the scent of them was unmistakeable-able.. Wasn’t long before the drake first nosed them, nostrils flaring like miniature bellows, and then gnawing and licking on it, perplexed at its tough and very cold nature. Once the taste of blood reached his tongue, however, it was all but too late for the drakeling.. That cube was going to end up in his belly, come hell or high water!

Furiously the drakeling chased the cube across the grass, nipping and scraping, clawing and biting until finally its structure crackled (with certain help from the sun) and he devoured every shardy piece right down to the melted drop of blood on the grass. The sphinx threw him a few others, enough to keep him occupied, but stopped at four, as to not have the drake bloat himself up too much.

Moderation in food was another thing he needed to learn, something probably not nearly as easily done should he have been grown. (No matter how she planned it, the concept of trying to keep a full grown drake from eating when he felt the slightest whim to do so just didn’t seem to work out well for her own person..).

The feeding occupation took all of a half an hour, as Cathŕn chased one, then another and another, nearly shredding up the grass as he did. By the end of it, the sphinx half-wondered if his mouth was not numb from the cold already, though even if so, then his stomach certainly had to be dealing with a lot of furnace work to keep the core temperature of the drake steady.

At that point the ice cube treats remained inside the container, even as Cathŕn was scouring the grass for any bits or new ones he may have missed. As much as the little drakeling was starting to take an indifference to cold, there were a few other things he needed to take to beforehand. Equally, his organism needed a break from the see-saw temperature ride it was experiencing, if only for a short while.

Storing the container in the depths of the tree’s shade, the sphinx instead dug out a bag of treats from the bag, and a relatively short line of rope. Standing, she walked to the drake and caught his attention with his name, before the scent of the treat. With a quick slip of a knot, the treat ended up at the rope’s end, and their walk could begin.

“Stay, Cathŕn,” the sphinx cautioned, forcing the drake down from his jump at her and the food, dangled just a little out of his snout’s reach. The hissing pouty face was almost as priceless as it was offended.

“Stay,” she re-affirmed, and waited until the little drake sat as still as was to be expected of his current ability, before taking a few steps forward, the treat moving with her, “Cathŕn, follow.”

The drake’s head perked at the mention of his name, and in a few instances he was standing on all fours, wings twitching anxiously as he waited a few moments. When the sphinx made a beckoning motion with the hand, jittering the treat a little, “Fooolllooow, Cathŕn.” he gained a bit more courage to take a few more steps.

“Good, good, c’mon now..” With a few more hops, he was at her side again, beak biting at the air just under the treat. “No, Cathŕn.. not yet, you goof.” The sphinx smiled and took a few more steps onward, dangling the treat again with a “Follow..” With a fraction of a second, the drake was at her heels, hopping after on his own stunty feet. “Good, boy. That’s right.”

The ‘hop and stop’ took them from the tree to the edge of the fence, a following trek that was less walking so much as hobbling. By the end of it, the irritation of being denied a treat for so long made the drake a snarky, snappy little thing, almost to the point of gnawing at the mammalian’s own heels, had she not stopped him with a firm, well-placed palm on the head.

“Alright, alright, geeze..” she frowned, slipping the meaty treat from the knot and handing it over to the hatchling. “I don’t see how you could be that hungry after those cube things, but you don’t have to be so bossy about it.” Though she supposed this was only a mild level of bossy a drake could pull off, considering herself fortunate in that regard.

She tried to walk the way back with an empty string knot and only the command to follow, but it didn’t take long for the drake to realize what enticed him was gone, so instead he merely remained sitting in the grass, content as a cucumber.

For now he could stay there all he liked, first stint into the trick wasn’t going to bring them any miracles, certainly not when the creature being trained was not affectionate towards her to begin with (and arguably not even clever enough to put two and two together out of habit). So, a quick trip back to the bag for a refill and the rest of it securely set into the side-pouch, the sphinx returned to the drake for tour number two.

The next stint was not much different from the first, save for how the get-go went more smoother, skipping the initial doubtful phase. Another difference, although slight, was Cathŕn’s lingering irritation at being lead on with no immediate reward, but once the second treat had been given to him at their next stop point, he seemed to forget all about it after a few minutes.

Which was great in keeping him at a vague level of content.. not so much if you were hoping to teach him something.

The third and fourth tours went about as well, though the hobble-skip stepping and following was gradually leaned towards keeping a more continuous pace. It seemed the drake wasn’t quite getting the idea mostly because a lack of ‘start’ and ‘finish’ meant his brain was able to think it was treat time before it was the end of trick time. But much to his chagrin, that was just something Cathŕn had to live with for now.

On the fifth try, the sphinx set up to poles with a good few yard distance. Starting from one end, she lead him on with the treat to the end of the other, where he was given his reward. Then, the same was repeated when coming back. A few circles likes this, and the drake was beginning to have less issue with a walking pace than one needing constant waiting to catch up, even if he was somewhat slow at this stage of life.

The waddles of circles finally ended when the bag of treats had only a few more left, meaning the next few had to be made to count.

The first of them went to extending the command. This time, as they walked from one end to the other with a few ‘follows’ in between just in case Cathŕn opted to forget (yet again), the sphinx did not stop at the other end, instead guiding the drake around the pole and starting off back again.

To his credit, Cathŕn didn’t even seem to notice. The drake waddled after in a manner which could be considered faithful if one was very generous with the word. Reaching the other end, the sphinx repeated it again, turning around the pole and back again. Though growing restless, the drake continued after her. Finally, a third circle in, she stopped in the middle and handed him the treat.

The next one was tougher to pull off, as a new treat was placed into the knot and their walk began along the edge of the yard fence with no poles to mark the distance. The sphinx lead him on and on, with no circle done due to the size of the yard, pausing every once in a while with a stern “Stay” before continuing again, treat ungiven.

It was at this stage the drake was starting to feel a little bit cheated. He was doing a lot of walking and a lot of waddling and the grass was tall and there were rocks and, and, and..
And at the end of it all, when the sphinx finally stopped and knelt down, he had his face rubbed with a lot of kind words, but no treat.

Cathŕn pondered on this.
It didn’t take a lot of time for him to start hissing once a conclusion was reached.

But the sphinx merely smirked and reach under his chin, gently letting the claws scrape up against it and the drake suddenly found himself changing his mind. Actually.. yes.. his belly was alright, he could probably survive without that meat, but this scratching thing.. This was new and this was good and everything was suddenly alright.

For about half a minute, until it would no longer matter again, as it usually did with minds that liked the moment more than the future or the past.

Still, the sphinx wasn’t letting him off the hook that easily. A few more tries with the meat as beacon and compass, Cathŕn received no more reward than a few chin scratches, until finally there was just an empty knot hoop to follow (which took him a while to realize, in all honesty). By the end of it all, there was just the hand wave and that sound thing.

With a few Stay’s and No’s mixed in, he knew it to be a different sound than the others. Not that they all weren't incredibly dumb to begin with, but still. Those sounds were otherwise Good, because they gave him food, or – as it turned out – made his chin and spine feel all tingly and good.

With the last laps around the yard completed, the sphinx had him follow after her as they reached the tree off to the side and a final stay finished that for now.
