Character battles work slightly differently than Pet-battles.
A non-trained character attacks with tooth and nail, just as a pet would.. which is much less effective than somebody trained in the art of the sword or spell.

As such, a well-trained character uses the "expertise" system, as well as perhaps magic and spells.
