It had taken a lot of hemming and hawing for Kai to decide who to train, in the end. He had a lot of creatures now, and frankly, all of them needed at least some basic training so they'd stop trying to eat him. In the end, he'd decided to try and train Atalanta, his peaceful, fun loving Neptica who was never mean to him. A little distracted, sure, but she hadn't bit him or attempted to drown him.
Kai slipped on his water amulet, which was the best thing that he'd even encountered in his entire life, a pair of goggles that he had, of course, won in a contest, and checked to make sure the captain's whistle was securely tied around his neck on a length of rope. Okay. He was good. He slid of the dock and slipped into the water, and was immediately greeted by Atalanta, who swam by and bumped into him.

He had a plan. He wasn't sure how well Neptica could hear human speech, and he was certain they wouldn't be able to hear it if EITHER of them were underwater, so he'd obtained a captain's whistle... a beautiful little device that would work, even while submerged.
He stayed close to the dock so he could reach up into the back he'd brought with him... the bag of fish. Yeah, he knew how to train a giant porpoise. FISH. After a lot of debate, he'd decided to use one long, low whistle for her 'name.' He'd been fiddling with the whistle for a while to get ready for this. He gave a low whistle. Nothing. He gave another, after a pause. Atalanta surfaced nearby, zoning in on him, and he chucked a fish at her.
Well, that got her excited, but not exactly her attention, as soon as she realized - fish.

It was just as convenient, in a way, that she was so distracted by the concept of fish. He'd been worried that she'd just stare at him unendingly and he'd never make sure she only really responded to the sound of her 'name'. Thankfully, he was training her this first, so he could use all kinds of other noises, on and off of the whistle, to show Atalanta all of the things she shouldn't bother responding to. Then he could worry about training other commands.
But for right now, he just had to get her attention again. He blew the whistle, once, long and low, again grateful for how much practice he'd put in with the thing (even if Cailum had looked ready to murder him by the end of it). She wasn't paying attention at all, so he just kept pausing for a while and then repeating the whistle. Eventually, when she realized the fish weren't magically spawning and there was a weird noise coming from Kai, she looked back again... AND THEN FISH! HOLY SHIT!

Atalanta was beginning to put two and two together. There was always a noise before the fish. She heard the noise again, and began swimming around, trying to figure out where exactly the fish were coming from. And then she noticed it, when she happened to be searching in Kai's general direction when it happened again. KAI WAS THROWING THE FISH. HE WAS THE SOURCE OF FISH.
Well, once she'd figured that out, she rubbed all up against him, trying to coax more fish out of him. Kai sighed. For a dolphin like creature, she wasn't all that clever, was she? Well, he supposed he couldn't blame her. She'd never taken orders from a whistle before. This was a lot of new concepts he was throwing at her. Eventually, she seemed to get bored and start swimming off a bit, so he let out another low, long whistle. This time, Atalanta recognized the noise and turned right around, mouth open expectantly. Not wanting to disappoint when she was finally starting to get it, Kai chucked a fish practically right into her open mouth.

Now that she was starting to respond to the whistle, however, it was time to mix things up. He let out a loud, high pitched whistle, which got Atalanta's quickly fleeting attention very quickly. However, she just faced him, seemingly staring, and he didn't give her any fish at all. She seemed a little broken hearted by this, and began swimming away, which prompted Kai to let out a long, low whistle. She didn't bother looking back at first, but after a pause, she did, and was rewarded with a fish.
Now she just looked really confused. She stared at Kai for a while longer, and then got bored and wandered off. Kai took the advantage and let out a burst of short whistles. Atalanta glanced sullenly over, clicking sadly, but was not rewarded with any fish. At the long low one, she looked over just as slowly and got a fish. She stared at Kai in obvious consternation, not quite sure what his game was. You could almost hear the gears turning in her head as she began to slowly but two and two together. He was trying to communicate with her, wasn't he? In some weird, human way! It was because he couldn't click properly, she just knew it!

Well, she knew that he was trying to communicate, now, but wasn't quite sure what in the world he was trying TO communicate. She stared at him for a while longer, waiting for him to do something. It turned into a bit of a staring contest as he did absolutely nothing. Finally, she began descending into the water, thing about bumping him from below. Then the whistle came again, once again long and low. She surfaced, and a fish came her way. She turned around and swallowed it down, and almost immediately, more whistles came, this time high and fast.
Atalanta seemed to be figuring it out. The most recent flurry of whistles Kai unleashed prompted no response from her. He tried shouting energetically, but she ignored him completely. Okay... Time to try it. He let out a low whistle, and she turned to face him. He could have shouted with joy. Instead, he rewarded her in another fish. He tried a few times, intermixing shouts with random combinations of whistles, but Atalanta had it figured out. When Kai wanted her attention, perhaps so that he could give her a delicious fish, he would blow once on the whistle, low and long. That was her cue.
