On Monday, February 4 at 7 PM EST, NASA will transmit an MP3 of the Beatles' song Across The Universe, well, across the universe. Its destination will be Polaris, which is 2.5 quadrillion miles away. At light speed, it will take 431 years for the recording to reach Polaris.

The transmission serves to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the song*, the 45th anniversary of the NASA Deep Space Network, and the 50th anniversary of NASA. It was initiated by Martin Lewis, who was given the blessings of Paul McCartney and Apple records.

*--Across The Universe was first released in 1970 on the Beatles' soundtrack album of "Let It Be." However, John Lennon wrote it in 1968 as the proposed B-side of the single Lady Madonna. John donated the song to a charity album, and George Harrison's The Inner Light would fill in on the single.
