It was so frickin' hot that day that Carlie definitely didn't feel like
cooking at all so she and Rory were going to go to the nearest
restaurant that they both liked and that served good and some
what healthy food. Luckily for them it was a Chinese restaurant,
which was perfect for both of them, Chinese was their favorite.
Carlie finished making sure that Rory was cleaned up after playing
outside with some of the neighborhood kids her age, and she grabbed
her purse and keys and they were off. During the past five years since
Rory's been born had been somewhat hard for Carlie, but, it was totally
worth it, when she first found out that she was pregnant she had been
petrified, scared, terrified, whatever you wanted to call it. It was a few
months after Riley had just disappeared with no word to anyone, and
Carlie wasn't sure if she could raise a baby by herself regardless of
the fact that tons of women have done it, and they turned out fine.
But still, and no matter how hard Carlie had tried, she hadn't been
able to get a hold of Riley, so Claire just assumed that he didn't
care anymore. "Mommy, I want some noodles!"[b] Rory exclaimed
happily as they entered the all too familiar restaurant and were seated
at their usual table, most of the staff here knew them both by name.

Carlie smiled and nodded. [b]"Okay, you can have some, do you want
some chicken and rice?" She asked, and had to contain some giggles
when Rory had a look of intense thinking on her face. She was just so cute!
"Yes, please, and can I have some tea?" Carlie nodded and gave
their order to the waiter when he got there. Once he walked away, Carlie started
looking around the restaurant, her eyes stopping at a guy a few feet away, she
could see the side of his face, and gasped when she saw who it was. There was
no way that he could be back, it was all a part of her imagination, she was going
to blame it on the heat, because it seemed entirely to impossible to be "Riley?"
She said, somewhat quietly, not too sure if he heard her or not.

it'd been about five years since the last time he'd been in this little city he once called home. riley had always had commitment issues so when things started getting too heated up between carlie and him he decided it was time to relocate. of course he ended up missing her and realized what he'd done was bad. he wanted to at least see her again at all costs. sighing he backed out of the drive way trying not to think the whole way to his destination. his destination being that laid back little chinese resturaunt that he always used to go to. before he left that was. it wasn't that he was trying to be an ass hole because riley so isn't like that at all but he just didn't like getting close to anyone. there was a reason for that too. he had a huge problem once wih a girlfriend who he had gotten way to close to because she ended up getting in an accident and losing her memory. now whenever he'd gotten close to anyone outside the family he'd say goodbye once things got a little too serious for the boy. it was beginning to take the boy longer to get to the place then he'd hoped. he had hit every single stinking red light on his way there. finally he was parking the car and getting out. there was more then one reason as to why he was here of all places. he really just wanted to see if carlie was there. it had been so long since he'd seen her. riley was a little nervous to see how she'd react him just trying to walk right back into her life like nothing happened. in his eyes he was just giving himself some room to breathe.


but for five years? it was pretty possible. he gave himself five years of breathing room and she had no idea where he had went. he didn't tell anyone where he'd gone. riley wanted to be alone with his family. which now he was missing dearly. he was used to sharing a home back in hollywood with his sister danielle and he was trying to convince her to move here just for him. she probably would end up doing that in the end. sighing he parked the car in the parking lot and got out taking in a deep breath trying to think things out before he walked in there. not like there was a way for him to know that she was in there. she may not have been and she might have been. who knew. his deep blue eyes darted around the place a few times and saw a ratther familiar face not to far away from him. she seemed to see him at the same time. it looked like she muttered something but he wasn't sure. he didn't know whether he should feel welcome or unwelcomed. it was awkward a little. he didn't want to be there but he also did at the same time. he wanted out of the awkward situation that he was putting himself into but at the same time he just wanted to see her and talk to her. riley just didn't want to end up fighting with her though. he smiled a crooked little grin at her and took a few steps forward. she was sitting down at a table with a little girl and he started to wonder. "uh, hi carlie." he said lightly as he looked down at her. nervous much riley?

carlie couldn't help but just stare at the man in front of her. she really
didn't know what else to do, she wasn't actually entirely sure that she
was really seeing him, it had been five years after all and maybe, just
maybe, carlie was finally losing her mind and she was most likely just
imagining him being there, which seemed just a tad bit more plausible
to her. carlie glanced at rory who seemed content in just sitting at the
table coloring, she looked up at carlie and then riley. carlie wondered
briefly if riley would be able to tell that rory was his, she did look like
carlie, but, she had his eyes, after she'd been born, carlie had hoped
that the baby would have his eyes, it was one of the many things that
she loved about him (and still does). but she wasn't quite sure what
riley would think about rory, she didn't know if he would acknowledge
her or what, he did just disappear after all. it was just all so messed
up, she wanted to know what riley was doing back here, and why he
came back, certainly it couldn't be because of her, and carlie wasn't
going to delude herself into thinking that it was because if he indeed
missed her or whatever he wouldn't have left in the first place without
telling anyone where he was going and just run away, she wondered if
her knew how bad it had hurt her when he left, probably not, but still.

as much as carlie would like for things to go back to the way they were,
she knew that they couldn't. she had rory that she had to think of, and
as always, her needs and wants came first above everything, especially
above carlie's happiness. she had to be smart when it came to men, and
even though she knew that riley was her father and, when she decided to
tell him that, she wasn't so sure if she could trust him anymore, because
what if he decided that he wanted to leave without saying a word to anyone
again? that thought got carlie to thinking about why he left in the first place
which she didn't know, she was afraid that it was because of something that
she herself had done, or that he had just been bored with her and wanted to
leave so he did. she could feel herself biting her lip as she looked back up,
and saw that he saw her, she kept her face blank of all emotion, or at least
she tried to anyways, it probably wouldn't work, if someone really wanted to
see what she was feeling all they had to do was look in her eyes and they'd
have an answer. it gets very frustrating most of the time. carlie cleared her
throat softly "uh, hi carlie." he said. carlie wondered if he was just as
nervous as she was and figured he must be. carlie frowned, what did he have
to be nervous about? suddenly she could feel her anger rising, which wasn't
all that surprising. "what are you doing here?" she asked, folding her
arms across chest, it was a sort of defensive habit that she developed over
the years. "a better question would be, where have you been and why the
heck didn't you tell anyone you were leaving? didn't you think that everyone
would be worried sick about you, or did you just not care?" she asked, she
made sure to keep her voice down, they were in a public place after all. carlie
had plenty more questions for him, which was a given, but she wasn't going to
ask them yet.

there was really no reason for riley to be nervous. he just got that way. he didn't really know her anymore. she could have changed. he didn't know. he was so confused. at the same time he wasn't very confused at all and knew what was going on. he knew that he decided to come back to this town after five years of being gone. that was a stupid move right there. if he wanted to leave then he should have just left and stayed gone. his sister told him it wasn't a good idea and that she should just stay in hollywood with her. he was stubborn and went anyway. he was dreading her reaction to him being there. he could already tell that there was going to be allot of yelling. he wasn't going to shrink down into a little corner and take it though. he'd fight back if need be. not like they were going to get into a full blown fist fight. riley would never fight like that with a girl. it was wrong. wait, why was he even thinking about that? he watched her cross her arms as she spoke. oh shit. he thought as he stood there listening to her speak. he knew he messed up. it was pretty apparent that he knew that he had messed up. she just kept yelling at him. he was unsure what to do so he just stood there listening. he wasn't ignoring her. of course not. he wasn't going to show up ignore her then disappear again. he was pretty sure that he was back to stay.

"i want to explain but i don't want you to get angrier then you already are. okay?" he said after a minute of just standing there listening to her speak. he wanted to explain everything but he didn't want to get interupted by her. he hated that. it made him feel useless. he might as well be useless at this point though. he wasn't a very good person right now. in her eyes at least he wasn't. he knew that much for certain. "don't even think that i don't care carlie. if i didn't care i wouldn't be here. you understand? i'd still be back in hollywood if i didn't care. i'm back for you. i care." he snapped at her. this wasn't the usual riley. he didn't like to get mad or emotional at all. it wasn't him. just wasn't. but here he was pretty much yelling at her. he didn't want to yell. he didn't want to fight. he wanted things to go back to normal. he doubted that would happen. not at least any time soon. "so i'm guessing you've moved on?" he said gesturing towards rory. the little girl looked just like her. he didn't see much of her because she was colouring. he just wasn't sure what to do. he didn't want to ask so many questions like she had. he didn't have the right to anyway. not now at least. he knew better. he defiantly knew better.

carlie didn't know what to do. she didn't know if she should tell riley that rory was
his daughter as well as hers, of course she knew that legally she would have most
likely have to tell him, but her thoughts turned just a little bit bitter. if he cared
then he wouldn't have left in the first place. carlie looked down, biting her lips,
willing the anger that was seeping into her to go away. she didn't want to fight,
she didn't know what she wanted to do, she just wanted the past five years to
just not have happened, she still wanted rory to be there, but she wanted riley
to be there as well. this was just so confusing and she wanted to know why he
had left and why he came back, after all this time, why now? and why hadn't he
told anyone where he was going. when carlie hadn't heard from him, back then,
for a few days she got worried and started thinking that he just might have been
hurt somehow. and she'd been worried, she didn't know whether he was alive or
dead. but now as she could see, he was very much alive and, from the looks of
it, healthy. carlie frowned, so he hadn't been hurt or anything, so that meant he
just left because he wanted to. that thought hurt, because it made her think that
he hadn't wanted her anymore. it wouldn't surprise her, maybe he found someone
else wherever it was that he had run off to.

carlie bit back a scoff when he told her to not get angrier than she already was.
what did he expect? "how can i not be angry with you, riley? you left me at
a time that i needed you the most! what did you expect me to feel?" she told
him. she wasn't yelling, or anything like that, she was angry, but she sounded calm
as much as she wanted to do that, she couldn't, not only would it be stupid of her,
but her pride wouldn't let her. he left her at a time when she needed him the most.
sure she had her mom, dad, brother and her friends, but she didn't have him and of
course that was what hurt the most, she wasn't able to call him and let him know
because he wouldn't answer his cell phone or anything and so it felt like she had
to go through it alone. she kept her mouth closed while he tried to explain, only
because she knew it wouldn't help anything if she interrupted. she looked back up
at him, biting her lip still. "but if you cared, why did you just up and leave in the
first place? was it me, did i do something?" she asked him, winching a little when
he snapped at her. that wasn't usual behavior for him. it wasn't like him to snap at
her, when they had been together, he never yelled at her or anything, and she gave
him plenty of opportunities. she glared at him when he asked her if she moved on.
of course he wouldn't think of something that should be obvious. at that point, rory
finally looked up from her coloring and gave carlie, and riley, a big smile. carlie
shook her head at riley. "no, i didn't move on. why would i, not that it's any of
your business. why don't you take a good look at her and tell me who else she
looks like other than me." she told him.
