In Defense of Grey's Anatomy, Mad Men, Friday Night Lights and more! Grey's Anatomy by Scott Garfield/ABC
Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy
Question: Nobody will give us the straight scoop on the characters Meredith and Derek on Grey's Anatomy. They are still so loved, despite what the writers did to them in Season 3 and continue to do to them in Season 4. They have tried to convince us that the Meredith character, who once fought for the Derek character and was the first to tell him she loved him, wants nothing more than sex, but longtime fans know different. Ellen Pompeo's Meredith and Patrick Dempsey's Derek have incredible sparks. But now it seems ABC wasn't even being subtle last month in giving out clues about Derek's new love interest (Lauren Stamile), who has been reduced to being called the "anti-Meredith." Why do they keep rewarming the "let's keep the key couple apart" storyline at the fans' expense? Tell me they will try to repair the heart of the show. Those two just sparkle together and are still such a fan favorite. Please help, Matt! — Amy J., Vancouver, Wash.
Matt Roush: Help? Nothing I can do about this, but thanks for asking. And by the way, so nice to hear from a non-Meredith hater for a change. This character fascinates me like no one in a romantic comedy-drama since early Ally McBeal, because like that central character, she's designed to be loved and hated all at once — although Meredith is slightly less ridiculous, so we probably take her more seriously than we should. Meredith is maddening in her contradictions and ambivalence, and nowhere is that more acute than in her relationship with Derek. This season the writers have made it quite clear that Meredith is very aware that she's damaged goods and is pulling back from actual commitment as she recovers from her psychological scars, both recent and long-term. Much as Derek would like it to be different, he's accepting it for now, though he's not giving up the chase (despite the detours and new love interests ahead). Fans are predictably frustrated by the roadblocks being set up for this couple, but they feel more organic and emotionally grounded to me than the contrived way, for example, the Luke-Lorelai story played out on Gilmore Girls in its last few seasons. The fact that we've seen Mer and Der be together intimately lately without actually being "together" is, I think, an attempt to appease frustrated fans. I feel your pain and have argued in the past about the dangers in delaying gratification for favorite characters. But in this particular case, on a show that has thrown so many characters into each others' arms, I'm OK with this for now.
Question: I'm kind of shocked to see all of the hate for Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. I can understand if people feel that Private Practice has yet to live up to Grey's standards, but it's still early on. Even Grey's didn't live up to Grey's standards until well into Season 2. And how anyone isn't happy to have a new season of Grey's with a fresh start after last season's abysmal mess is simply looney. I haven't actually enjoyed Grey's Anatomy this much since Izzie finally cashed her check from Denny. — Dan
Matt Roush: I mostly agree. Grey's hasn't captivated me as completely as it did in the past, but I'm enjoying it more by the week. But the hate continues, as expressed in this rant from Marlene after watching last week's episode: "It brings to mind a Saturday Night Live skit. Oh, really? The man who thinks his foot doesn't belong to him just happens to be in the ER at the same time as the guy with the chain saw? Oh, really? The boy trick-or-treats for ears? Really? The daughter of a man who needs a heart transplant just happens to be killed in an accident? Oh, really? All I could say about this episode was, give me a break! Am I the only one who thinks Grey's is sliding downhill fast?" I'm sure you're not alone. But I'm beginning to feel there's a segment of the audience that has now decided it hates Grey's Anatomy for whatever reason, and nothing it can do will fix that perception. I thought this particular episode was pretty terrific and was not out of character for a show that has always featured outrageous as well as emotionally extreme cases. A season or so ago, I would imagine the average Grey's fan would be raving about David Clennon's anguished performance as the grieving dad who takes his daughter's heart. And the little boy guilt-tripping the staff (including the usually cynical Dr. Sloan) to do his pro bono surgery? I found that charming. The moments I loved the most in this episode were not mentioned here: Cristina and Callie laughing at their ridiculous woes over the operating table, George telling the heart patient he would have given his own heart to save his father if he could, and Bailey telling George that despite having done a hurtful thing to his wife, he's "not a bad guy." Anyone who ever loved Grey's and can't respond to moments like these... I'm not sure what to tell them.

Grey’s Anatomy: Are Mer and Der Over? November 7, 2007
So, do you want the bad news, or the really bad news?
First, the TV and movie writers’ strike that’s now into day three may mean lots of our favorite shows are going to end with seasons that are less than half as long as they were planned to be. Grey’s Anatomy, for instance, may end its current, fourth season after 11 episodes. Yikes, right?
And it gets worse. The season may end with fans left to wonder about the future of the show’s signature super-couple, or rather, whether or not Derek and Meredith even have a future together.
Star Patrick Dempsey tells TV Guide, “The next couple of episodes are going to be completely different with what happens with Meredith and Derek. I’m looking forward to that change and that movement . . . I just want the characters to continue to grow and to work things out realistically.
“Derek and Meredith’s relationship has gone as far as it can go. I don’t think it’s going to go unless she commits to marrying him or goes into therapy and starts working on herself. We’ll have a cliffhanger with this last show and there will be a resolve that seems to be permanent.”
So tell us: Would the end of McDreamy and Meredith mean the end of the show? Will you stay tuned if the couple splits for good? —Kimberly Potts

Television The va-jay-jay monologues These hot docs could use a few cc’s of testosterone By BARRETT HOOPER GREY'S ANATOMY created by Shonda Rhimes, with Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh and T.R. Knight. Airs Thursdays at 9 pm on ABC and CTV. Rating: NNN
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Ladytown. I'm not just referring to a recent episode of Private Practice devoted almost entirely to going down south, but to Grey's Anatomy and its equally estro-energized offspring in general.
What I'm wondering is, doesn't anybody on either of these shows have any balls?
Every week a bunch of medical stuff happens and every case parallels the personal lives of the staff, whether it's George left clinging to a bloody wedding dress or Meredith talking to a skydiver who had a near-death experience and is also unable to profess his feelings to the person he loves.
Gimme a break. Gender aside, the characters on these shows are so sackless, it's like The View set up shop in a hospital.
Head ball-breaker – and hence the person with the biggest balls – Bailey's been almost completely neutered this season. Meredith continues to be a pick-me, choose-me, love-me whiner with daddy issues and mommy issues and issues issues. But now that McDreamy's picked her, chosen her and loves her, she's rejecting him, turning him into McMopey, and I can't say I blame him. She wants a weekend, he wants a lifetime. But jeez, Derek, drop a pair and move on. It's not like she's that hot anyway.
George and Izzie have less chemistry than a periodic table. He's so emo he should be the one bursting into tears during sex.
At least Sloan's still a sexist pig, and a more likeable one at that. Loved his reaction to discovering the nursing staff had formed an anti-McSteamy coalition called the Nurses United Against Mark Sloan: "Are there any club activities?"
Although I'm not sure how I feel about him trying to move in on Callie O'Malley, whose cafeteria confrontation with Izzie was ridiculously high school. Izzie threw up her fists, ready to fight for George, and Callie wanted to talk. Not very manly, but at least it was grown up, which is so unlike Grey's Anatomy.
And we can't forget Alex, who's managed to hold onto his pair if only by the sheer fact he's using them, first by sleeping with Amnesia Girl and then with sexy Lexie, the younger, slightly less whiny Dr. Grey.
Even last week's gentleman's night plot line got derailed by the new Burke, Dr. Hahn (now, she's got some cajones), who made the guys sit around and play monopoly.
As Grampa Gilmore said, "You surgeons are all just a bunch of little children running around with your scalpels and your severed feet and your inappropriate sex in inappropriate places. You all need a good shrink."
What he didn't realize is that there's been enough shrinking at Seattle Grace already.
Too touchy-feely PRIVATE PRACTICE created by Shonda Rhimes, with Kate Walsh, Tim Daly, Taye Diggs and Amy Brenneman. Airs Wednesdays at 9 pm on ABC and 8 pm on CTV. Rating: NN
Over on PP, the once vampy (and hence interesting) Dr. Addison Montgomery now acts like a 14-year-old girl anxious about her first kiss.
Seems Addison – whose medical specialty is the va-jay-jay – has never let her fingers do the walking or paid herself lip service or gotten in some private practice (insert your own euphemism here). Something about being from Connecticut, which probably isn't on the tourist brochure.
Of course, by the end, with a gladiator-ahem-cum-cowboy fantasy about co-worker Dr. Feelgood in mind, she got it on with her gynormous shower head.
The ep also involved a discomforting amount of speculum usage, which again left me wondering if anybody on this show has a penis. I know I saw Taye Diggs and Tim Daly listed in the credits right before Speculum, but I'll be damned if I saw them anywhere in this shrill estrofest.
All of which reminds me of something Cristina said over on Grey's (actually, it's the only decent line of dialogue Sandra Oh's had this season). "You know, being aware of your crap and actually overcoming your crap are two very different things."
I just wish series creator Shonda Rhimes would recognize her crap and do something about it. Stat!
