vendredi 9 janvier 2009 | Tony Cotte

Time of Death

By Blair Thill
Associate Arts & Review E

" I'm making a few official announcements via this column. One: I am no longer a Grey's Anatomy fan. Two: Patrick Dempsey, despite your innate hotness at the advanced age of 40-something, I can no longer support your television career. Three: Katherine Heigl, consider yourself lucky that your character is dying.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I can feel free to move on to more specific explanations of my discontent. My feelings on Grey's have been wavering for some time now. Was I happy that Meredith and Derek were finally together for good? Yes. Was I a fan of Alex and Izzie getting back together? Absolutely. All in all, the season 5 premiere was looking pretty good. I thought that the gloom of season 4, the worst season of the top-rated ABC show, was behind us. Unfortunately, those plans went up in smoke along with the house of candles Meredith fashioned for Derek.

Shonda Rhimes is the obvious source of blame, transforming her once subtly dramatic show into three parts Days of Our Lives and one part E.R. (before George Clooney left, of course). Rhimes has somehow turned the former number-one show into the laughing stock of the entertainment industry. One specifically laughable storyline leads me to the next person to blame for the decadence of Grey's: Katherine Heigl. Problems the show has endured stem from the time Heigl was reportedly unhappy with the turn that her character took. But instead of fixing Heigl's expressed concern with Izzie's downfall, Rhimes seems to have decided to screw Heigl even more.

If there was ever a time I've wished to be a fly on the wall, it's when Heigl received the first script in which Denny returns to the show. I can only imagine the mix of shock, confusion, and unadulterated anger contorting the actress' usually stunning face. And then Izzie slept with her dead ex-fiancée. That was the exact moment I knew not just that Heigl was done (in more ways than one, it seems, with Denny's confession of Izzie's imminent death), but that Grey's was done. Even the biggest fan of the show couldn't think that was a good idea. With the addition of Denny, the entire hospital started to get out of whack. Cristina and Meredith stopped talking. The new doctors were just annoying. And George served no purpose whatsoever. The only positive part of the show has been the interesting pairing of Sloan and Little Grey, which resulted in last week's memorable (ahem) breakage of Little Sloan. Unless the two of them can somehow break Rhimes of her habit for self-destruction, I doubt that Grey's Anatomy will make it past one more season."

Grey's Anatomy has been rocked by rifts and rumours

HeraldSun
By Darren Devlyn

February 25, 2009 12:00am

GREY'S Anatomy is a monster hit and a ratings success in more than 60 countries, but rifts and rumours have rocked the Seattle hospital drama. What's going on?
There's no disputing the show's power to turn relative unknowns into extraordinarily well-paid household names.

Before Grey's burst on to the scene in 2005, who'd heard of Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers and Kate Walsh?

Four years later the show seems battle-weary, afflicted by a sequence of off-screen dramas.

So why has there been so much unrest on a show that guarantees its production team and cast so much wealth?

An experienced TV producer suspects creative fatigue is catching up with the cast and its writers.

He believes success might have gone to the heads of actors who, before Grey's, were struggling on the audition circuit.

‘‘Everyone who gets a break in this business reckons they won't be changed by money or fame,'' the producer says.

‘‘I laugh in their face when they say it. They all change. And it takes all of about five minutes for most of them to forget how lucky they are.''

The trouble on Grey's started two years ago, when Isaiah Washington was involved in an on-set altercation with Patrick Dempsey, who plays Derek ‘‘McDreamy'' Shepherd.

When Dempsey arrived on set after a meeting with a script supervisor, Washington blew a fuse.

He allegedly grabbed Dempsey by the throat and in the ensuing argument was said to have uttered an anti-gay slur about their castmate T.R. Knight.

Washington strenuously denied the allegations and Grey's producers told the Guide there was little substance to the fracas.

But Knight said in a statement: ‘‘I guess there have been a few questions about my sexuality.

"While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me.''

In an interview with the Guide, Dempsey said he was frustrated by the scandal.

He considered the demise of Washington a ‘‘tragic moment for everyone''.

‘‘I think the character (played by Washington) was phenomenal. It was a great character we've lost. And the other stuff? It's much better (Washington's exit) in the long run, I think. A lot of lessons had to be learned by everyone and it was tragic.

‘‘Ultimately, we're a family here. We're going to have good days, we're going to have bad days.''

In the end, no amount of spin could save Washington. By mid-2007 he was gone, his contract not renewed.

Heigl has also been at the centre of turmoil. She maintains she's put heart and soul into her portrayal of the psychologically fractured Izzie Stevens and she upset her employer when she went public with details of a salary dispute.

Her frustration stemmed from feeling she wasn't valued as highly as some of her co-stars.

Pompeo had negotiated a rise boosting her pay to $256,000 an episode when most of the cast were believed to be on considerably less.

Heigl's bosses hit back, insisting they'd offered her a significant rise. ‘‘Fortunately, we have a long-term contract to ensure she'll be with the show for several years to come,'' the network said.

Heigl is at the centre of another controversy, with reports she and Knight are quitting their roles.

Aussie actor Melissa George, who makes her on-screen debut next month, has already announced she's not renewing her contract.

Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes has tried to quash speculation Heigl and Knight are on the way out, despite their co-star James Pickens Jr telling magazine US Weekly: ‘‘Yes, she (Heigl) is (leaving). Wherever Katherine goes, I wish her nothing but the best. (Knight is) going too. He just wanted to pursue other career paths.''

Rhimes responded in People magazine, saying: ‘‘That was a very interesting rumour. And it's not true. That was absolutely taken out of context.''

Pickens claims he was misunderstood in the interview and made a statement saying he was clueless about Heigl and Knight's plans.

If Heigl's mind is on a future without Grey's, it could have something to do with her workload.

On a visit to the set, the Guide ran into Heigl the morning after a 16-hour working day.

She was free of make-up, her hair was in an untidy ponytail and she had a look of bleary-eyed exhaustion.

‘‘I'm totally complaining. I'm tired,'' Heigl said with a benign smile.

‘‘Friday nights, we end up working until two or three in the morning, then we sleep as much as we can Saturday.

‘‘Then you might have a photo shoot or a work event to go to Sunday.

‘‘Any tiny bit of time you might have in there to see family or friends, you're not going to be good company because you're tired and bitter, so I stay home and watch TV.''

Jesse Williams is the kind of guy you see and instantly have a crush on (Come on, look at those eyes!). But then once he opens his mouth, you can’t help but fall for him even more because he’s so darn humble. At 29, he’s already modeled in campaigns for Kenneth Cole, taught impressionable high students, worked alongside award-winning actors like Richard Gere and Don Cheadle, been cast in Sarah Jessica Parker’s pilot for a new HBO show Washingtonienne, and now he’s the guy everyone is talking about on Grey’s Anatomy, one of the most-watched shows on the planet.

All that and Jesse is still a mild-mannered gentleman, who hasn’t let any of his success go to his head. “I’m just grateful and genuinely happy to go to work every day,” says Jesse, who was born in Chicago and spent time in parts of Massachusetts, Providence, Philly, and most recently Brooklyn, NY, before landing his gig on Grey’s in Los Angeles. “On every set, I try to keep my mouth shut and pay attention, so I can absorb as much as possible, because I’ve definitely been lucky to have these opportunities.”

Jesse — an avid football player and fan, like his character Dr. Jackson Avery on Grey’s who notoriously tackled a man in the hospital on his first episode — credits his real-estate agent fiancé, Arin [sorry, ladies!], with telling him how exciting it is his career is taking off, and that it’s OK to enjoy the moment. “I’m really glad I have her for that — and for many other reasons,” says Jesse. “She’s the optimist to my pessimist. We balance each other out.” Awww. Yet another reason he’s so adorable.

/*\ SPOILER /*\

Your character was just introduced but he’s already impressing Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and infuriating Cristina (Sandra Oh).
Yes, Jackson’s part of the merger between Seattle Grace and Mercy West, and everyone’s trying to work really hard and overachieve, even if that can be at the patients’ expense sometimes. So he’s getting caught up in this competitive atmosphere a bit, and Cristina’s the most competitive of all. But he doesn’t want to be a part of the hospital’s drama. He’s just trying to work fast, hard and affectively. It’s strictly business for Jackson.

Well, usually, when characters bicker on Grey’s, it means they’re going to wind up in bed together sooner or later.
Really, is that the pattern?

Pretty much. So will Jackson end up with Cristina at some point?
If I knew, I’d be fired if I lead on. But I certainly know what you mean about the tables being set with the tension. I have to keep my mouth shut about that for now, though. I will say that I’d be really surprised if something didn’t happen between me and somebody. I don’t think you can be on Grey’s Anatomy without a sex scene!

/*\ FIN DES SPOILERS /*\

I know your fiancé, Arin, got you into the show. As a new fan, who’s your favorite character?
I would have to say Cristina. She always seems to be the hardest worker, the most passionate, and funny, which is important to me. Sometimes you’re laughing more at what she’s saying than her trying to be funny. As actors, I think everyone on the show is outstanding, but particularly the women. They have to carry a lot of the load for us, in terms of the drama in and out of the hospital. I am really, really impressed to stand beside them as they work. I think they can teach me a lot.

The show already has McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) and McSteamy (Eric Dane). If you could coin a name for your character, what would it be?
Patrick and Eric have cracked a lot of jokes about this on set, and Patrick is leading the charge trying to solicit people’s ideas for names for me. I can’t remember any they came up with because they were all so awful, but they were all about my eyes. Honestly, I don’t have any desire to have a nickname. But Patrick’s making it seem like it’s inevitable.

In Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 you were the nude model. On Greek you were known as the “Hotness Monster.” How does it feel to be labeled a heartthrob?
That’s something… I won’t say I want to run away from, but I definitely don’t want to get stuck in that role as “the boyfriend” or “a piece of meat.” After those roles, I was lucky enough to be able to do a really gritty cop drama with Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke in Brooklyn called Brooklyn’s Finest, which will be out next year. And then I did an off-Broadway play called The American Dream, and a horror movie [co-written by Angel and Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon] called Cabin in the Woods, playing a dorky, shy guy, a counter point to… whatever you want to call it… the more hunky stuff. As long as I can keep mixing it up, and having multidimensional arcs in my performance, then I’ll be happy.

Now for our usual BettyConfidential roundups: What adjectives would you use to describe yourself?
Driven, funny, happy and appreciative.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
People seem to be surprised to know that before I was an actor I was a public high school teacher, who taught American history, African history and English. I also worked at a law firm.

What exercise do you love?
I like to run, but what I really enjoy is basketball, soccer, football. I definitely like to get active and get myself energized.

What’s the one dish you can cook the best?
Let’s see. Is that with or without a microwave? I make really good pasta, but my breakfast is probably the best: eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon. I love anything involving bacon. I may not be able to cook great, but I can eat really well.

What do you do to relax?
I like being outside somewhere quiet. I actively seek it out. It’s a little hard when I’m living in New York, but here [in L.A.] it’s been great because I can go to the beach or park. I just need some sun somewhere quiet and I’m instantly relaxed.

Which celeb would you like to watch the World Series with?
Matt Damon if he wasn’t from Boston! I’m actually more of a football person, so I’d rather be watching the Super Bowl with Ricky Gervais. I love that guy!

If you were going to appear on a reality TV show, which show would it be?
Something that has a competitive edge, like American Gladiators or Wipe Out, that’s very physical. I think I could win at something like Survivor too, but I could only eat a few bugs or disgusting things. I couldn’t do that for long. That’s why I would never make it on a show like Fear Factor.

Marry, date or dump: Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, Reese Witherspoon?
Reese Witherspoon for marry and date. Reese just seems cool, funny and self-made, which I have a lot of respect for. Not to diss Angelina Jolie. I like her work and I think she’s incredibly dedicated to a lot of causes and that goes pretty unnoticed when you think of how much press she gets. She must have a crazy schedule with the kids, her career and all of the great work she does around the world. My schedule is crazy and no one knows who the hell I am. I can’t imagine what she must go through. So I have tons of respect for her. And I’ll just ignore the Megan Fox thing. I’m not going to go there.

QUOTE
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ should bring back Burke - but it doesn’t have to be the same actor. If not Isaiah Washington, try someone new. That could be a nice storyline for Cristina. – Annette in Comments
I’m glad you shared this sentiment, because I made the exact same pitch to ‘Grey’s’ creator Shonda Rhimes. I mean, why introduce some new doc played by Kim Raver when a return by Burke (even via a recast) could really rattle the rafters? Rhimes’ response: “First of all, you can’t recast Burke. As far as I’m concerned, none of these [cast members] are recastable.” As for ever addressing any business left unfinished when Burke ran out on Yang, Rhimes countered, “No, I feel like we really played that storyline out in the way we meant to play it out - and I think it worked.”

QUOTE
Last week on Grey's Anatomy, Derek Shepherd stepped into the spotlight, saving a co-worker's legs and life. This week, Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) steps into it, testing her ethics while trying to save a patient — a 10-year-old whose parents have millions to donate to the hospital. Could Arizona bring Seattle Grace out of economic turmoil? Capshaw tells TVGuide.com about the challenges her character will face, the upcoming speed bumps for Arizona and Callie (Sara Ramirez) and the possibility for wedding bells at Seattle Grace...

TVGuide.com: What can you tell us about the Arizona-centric episode?
I have a patient who I fight very hard for. Everybody feels strongly about it and it's a very high-stakes episode. It's life or death. The episode speaks to the whole idea that money runs a hospital. The chief [James Pickens Jr.] is having a hard time figuring out how to make the hospital ascend the ranks of the numbers game, [and] money helps make that happen. Arizona's case happens to be with a set of parents who have the ability to give or not give in a very consequential way.

TVGuide.com: Arizona seems to have a pretty straight moral compass. How will she feel in making these decisions based on money?
Yeah, she's a little perfect that way [Laughs]. This episode has all of that in mind, but at the same time, we are all only human and we can all only ever do the best that we can. Sometimes the best we can, in her case, leaves her a little more vulnerable to the elements and to the story and what's happening. She has to make choices that are very hard as a surgeon, but also as a pre-eminent doctor in a hospital that is part of the reason that people are giving money or not giving money.

TVGuide.com: This episode also features Arizona's birthday.
She has a birthday and very in line with Arizona's character, who is not about herself and just very clear about who she is, she's not the one to be asking for balloons and candles. She thinks it's a day like any other day. There is a party, but it's not one that she knows about. Given that in this particular episode we've centered on her professional and personal life, the two definitely crossover. She doesn't have the typical reaction to someone going out of their way to throw them a big party.

TVGuide.com: What's in store for the future of Callie and Arizona's relationship?
This season has been about cementing a very mature and grounded relationship and taking it forward. This is a drama, of course; there will be conflict, but for the time being, they're enjoying being in a relationship that seems stable.

TVGuide.com: We have not seen Callie and Arizona get intimate this season. Sara Ramirez said they probably are. What's your take on that?
Definitely, of course it's happening. They're in a committed relationship. It's like the beginnings of any relationship, but I think they're very much together and all of that is happening. I'm sure that we'll have our time.

TVGuide.com: Callie has vacillated about her sexuality. Could that be an issue that comes up?
There's definitely ample opportunity for that to happen. Obviously the halls of Seattle Grace have been well known for missteps. These are doctors, they're in intense situations and their personal lives follow suit. They make mistakes. They kiss the wrong people, they sleep with the wrong people, they sleep with the right people, they kiss the right people. We get to see how things unfold and if there's forgiveness. Callie could find another guy or girl. Her playing field is vast.

TVGuide.com: Will Sloane (Eric Dane) and Arizona butt heads because they've slept with the same woman?
In a way it's implied that they might. Whenever there's been a chance to play that I am intimidated by him or being standoffish, I've always chosen to make it very playful. It's much more Arizona's style to find it very amusing.

TVGuide.com: Could there be wedding bells for Callie and Arizona?
There's probably a lot more stuff that has to happen before that happens. Listen, being that I've been married for five years now and I've been with my husband for nearly eight, you have to make sure you're with the right person and you need the groundwork to be laid. I don't think they're going to get married just to get married. As Arizona goes, I think she has incredible discipline and she does, as you said, have a very strict moral compass and marriage would not be something she would jump into without giving it a great amount of thought.

Grey's Anatomy: Robert Baker is Seattle Grace's new homewrecker

TVGuide.com: Arizona refers to her family a lot. Will we meet her dad?
I hope that we do. They've certainly set it up that we could and it would be a great opportunity to take advantage of.

TVGuide.com: Arizona has been much less fazed by the merger. Is she just superconfident?
It's sort of funny, she never thinks she's wrong and you don't hate her for it. There's no ego though, she just always thinks she's right and she is. Cristina wanted to get on my service because no one was going to let go of the person that saves babies, so maybe that's part of it. In Thursday's episode, it will be revealed whether or not she's worth her weight in gold and how important she is.

QUOTE
Now that you’ve seen the kiss between Owen’s gal Cristina (Sandra Oh) and new Mercy Wester Jackson (Jesse Williams) on Grey’s Anatomy,  find out about the aftermath, details on the other Mercy West-Seattle Grace coupling and the return of Izzie (Katherine Heigl) from Williams himself …

TVGuide.com: Jackson and Cristina kissed! What the … ?
Jesse Williams: From the beginning when Jackson joined, he’s immediately thrown into this direct competition with Cristina. We’re on the same cases, we’re battling for surgeries. We’ve had a couple of run-ins. In this episode, she really takes charge and goes with her gut and I’m in a position to really admire her. We have similar character traits and watching her take the reins gets Jackson fired up. He’s looking at her differently now. He’s seen a whole new side of her that’s so attractive. What also helped was that he had been boozing all night, but the attraction is real and it has been mounting. I think she kind of liked it.

TVGuide.com: Yeah, she doesn’t pull away right away. She kisses him back for a brief moment.
Williams: That would be Jackson’s argument. We don’t address it directly right away in the coming episodes. What we’re doing is letting it hang out there for a little bit and let the audience feel that tension and the moments between her and I going forward. Jackson doesn’t know anything about Cristina and Owen [Kevin McKidd], so it’s not an affront to Owen, it’s just a man attracted to a woman.

TVGuide.com: Are you worried that fans of Cristina and Owen are going to hate your character?
Williams: You’re not supposed to like [the Mercy Westers] off the jump. I view it as Jackson has to take his lumps. He’s stepped into the enemy’s territory and he welcomes that. It’s a pretty relatable crime of passion. We’ve all been attracted to somebody for all types of reasons. Sometimes you go for it and sometimes you get slapped on the nose for it. I think they’ll forgive me.

TVGuide.com: How does this kiss affect the relationship between Cristina and Owen?
Williams: Surprisingly enough, I think it doesn’t help or hurt. They’re both so strong-headed and so career-oriented that, good or bad, the work comes first. You don’t see the residual effects immediately, and then it wells up and it’ll explode at some point. We haven’t come to that point yet.

TVGuide.com: Kim Raver is coming in as Teddy, who was in the war with Owen. It seems like this is going to turn into a love quadrangle. How does that play out?
Williams: A lot of tension is mounting right now. Everybody is working together and a red flag has not been put in the sand yet. Nobody is laying claim and there isn’t a big kerfuffle yet. It’s a ticking time bomb. Who’s going to make the first move? Who knows? Who doesn’t know? Is it obvious? Was it really something or was it truly platonic? I’ve done a fair amount of scenes with Kim, but I don’t know what’s going to happen yet. Jackson is definitely paying attention with two ears to see what happens.

TVGuide.com: Will people start to find out about the kiss? Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is returning to the hospital and Cristina does tend to tell her everything.
Williams: It’s kind of our secret. Going forward, that’s the mystery of it. Cristina does always confide in Meredith, though. I don’t know if Jackson’s dodges a bullet or not.

TVGuide.com: Cristina and Jackson will have to be around each other a lot still. How hard will that be for them?
Williams: There’s so many things going on that when we are together, it’s so work-related. We’re clashing high speed on issues with patients. There will definitely be constant reminders and temptations. We’re worried about prying eyes and who knows what and where, so it’s something they keep with them. There’s already been a bit of a banter between both of them, and this raises the stakes.

TVGuide.com: Is Cristina his cardio God? Maybe his version of Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington)?
Williams: It’s not so much teacher-student because they’re both residents and both pretty bad ass in their field, but I think it becomes more primal, just passionate attraction, more so than being about the work as much as about her style.

TVGuide.com: How will this kiss affect Jackson’s transition at Seattle Grace?
Williams: In retrospect, that weighs a bit on Jackson’s mind. What have I done? I’m walking into a situation where I am the minority here and I just go head long into something that could potentially have backlash. Jackson has to deal with navigating that, carefully going forward and getting Cristina’s take on this. I can say it gets addressed, words are spoken between the two as to how we’re going to handle this.

TVGuide.com: Jackson is not the only Mercy Wester who likes a Seattle Gracer. Reed (Nora Zehetner) and Alex (Justin Chambers) are developing a budding relationship. Are the Mercy Westers just home wreckers?
Williams: We are just a passionate people, the Mercy Westers. We know what we like and we take what we like. That’s probably how we’ve gotten ahead. We don’t know Izzie, we haven’t watched [Izzie and Alex] grow for five years, we weren’t there for their wedding, all we know is she’s a snappy broad who just got fired for making a stupid mistake. Will some compassion grow from there? Sure. But Reed is on her own there, I’m not the one chasing a married person. I will defend her only to a point.

TVGuide.com: What’s the dynamic like once Izzie returns to the hospital in the Nov. 12 episode?
Williams: I think everybody has a lot of unanswered questions for her. What the hell are you doing? What is your deal? Don’t take us all down for this and disappear. These are people that care about her, but on the outside, everybody is just concerned with what’s going to happen with her now. Alex is the one that takes it hard when she steps foot back in Seattle Grace
