Should They Stay or Should They Go?: Networks Mull Shows to Renew or Cancel
Boston Herald
Mar. 27--This is the time of year TV lovers get worried. The five commercial networks are weighing which series to renew and which to ax.
ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," CBS' "The Mentalist" and Fox's "House"?
Safe, of course. These are all shows that score at the top of the Nielsen rankings week after week. They aren't going anywhere anytime soon.Of course, you don't have to be a Top 10 series to win renewal. Shows such as NBC's "The Office" and CBS' "Ghost Whisperer," for example, have little to worry about. Both shows deliver in key demographics the networks care about.
But for series such as ABC's "Ugly Betty," NBC's "Chuck" and Fox's "Dollhouse," the future is murky.
Here's some advice for the networks, though they didn't ask: A look at what's in jeopardy and what can be jettisoned.
ABC:
Save: "Ugly Betty" and "Samantha Who?" The former is on hiatus until next month, the latter has been bumped all over prime time. "Ugly" is beautiful with the best odd couple currently on the tube, sweet Betty (America Ferrera) and ditsy Amanda (Becki Newton). With the new series "Better Off Ted," the network has a foundation for a night of comedy that easily surpasses CBS' long-running comedy bloc. Don't blow it.
Sink: "Private Practice" -- it loses about a third of "Grey's Anatomy's" lead-in. If creator Shonda Rhimes had the time back, she might be able to make "Grey's" watchable again.
