Why would you avoid going into such a nice city?
Not only bunch of great Polish restaurants where you can dine for 1/3 of what we pay in CA and have HUGE selection of good beer, but great Blues Clubs.

you can take I80 over to I39 go north and join I90 at Rockford I think its about 40-50 miles farther but you miss the traffic and tolls in the Chicago area. once you join I90 south of Rockford you will have to pay a toll just before the Wisconsin border. It depends if you want to miss Chicago or not. I would suggest not taking 90 through town but take I80 over to the I294 then I290 which joins 90 north west of Chicago I believe there is 7 tolls on I294 and I90. This can be a high traffic route depending on what time it is

Yep, there sure is.

I used to do it all the time in a 18 wheeler pulling a 53 foot trailer.

You follow 90 right through the middle and don't use those blasted toll roads.

But the secret is this......

You go through between 11pm and 4am.
There is very little traffic at this time.

LOL....That is also the secret to going through Atlanta on I-75, Dallas on I-20, Houston on I-10 and almost any large city with an interstate highway through the middle of it, works every time. But, we also add 10AM to 2 PM as a second time frame.

My combo length is 64'. Best to stay outside the city proper.

I-80 to I-39 to I-90 looks like the best way to go. Thank you very much for the info. 50 miles or so extra is no big deal.

when you get to Rockford its a little tricky getting to 90. I39 joins state 20 to I90 just watch the signs you will be OK. the exit onto 90 from state 20/ I39 is a real tight circle and posted speed is advisable have a safe trip

Dave, what do you think of I-80 to Omaha, then north on I-29, all the way to Rapid City, SD., then I-90 to Billings, MT. That way I would miss Wisconsin and Minnesota altogether.

that is a good route also-- I thought you just wanted to miss Chicago-- that is about 100 miles longer than going up I94 to Billings but a good route with no tolls except where 80 meets 294 there is a toll there and if you are towing Illinois is now a 65 mph state since Jan 1 :D
