Nice pics! They remind me of another life.
Wow, buddies with Col. Crandall, I'm impressed! What Native American nation are you affiliated with? Chip |

Choctaw. I just met Bruce Crandall Monday. He's the nicest guy, and LOVES to tell people about his experiences no matter who they are. He talked to me for almost 10 minutes while others were waiting like I was a very important person or something. I'd like to spend some real time with him just listening to all he has to share some day. |

The small town where I live is named after a Choctaw maiden, Abita, who was gravely ill and was miraculously cured by drinking from the artesian springs found here (It has lots of minerals and I hear the highest manganese content in the world). There are lots of Choctaw still around here, though most have forgotten their heratige. My ex-DW has both Choctaw and Cherokee ancestors. Needless to say, I've attended Pow-Wows of both cultures as she was a big geneologist.
I truly believe that our kids have misplaced hero worship, idolizing rockstars and sports figures of questionable character. As a culture, I think we need to be re-directing their admirations towards true heros like Col. Crandall and other MOH recipients. How many young people today know his story? It needs to be retold again and again, so people never forget what it is to be a true hero - risking everything against all odds, over and over again, with no thought of self, for the love of your brothers in arms who are giving everything they have too. It would truly be a great honor to meet him, and thank him for his service. Chip |
