Title: Holiday Eggnog

CoffeeCup - December 8, 2009 12:47 AM (GMT)
I am on a budget and my son told me the other day that he would like some eggnog.

So, I searched online for a good recipe and found one. I made this today and it is good. Instead of putting it in a punch bowl I put it in a gallon container that I placed in the fridge.

HOLIDAY EGGNOG

2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 quarts milk
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
2 cups heavy whipping cream
ground nutmeg

In heavy 4-quart saucepan, with wire whisk, beat eggs, sugar, and salt until blended. Gradually stir in 1 quart milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon well, about 25 minutes (mixture should be about 170 F to 175 F. but do not boil or it will curdle).Pour custard into large bowl; stir in vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and remaining milk. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled, about 3 hours.

To serve, in small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat heavy or whipping cream until soft peaks form. with wire whisk, gently fold whipped cream into custard mixture.

Pour eggnog into chilled 5-quart punch bowl; sprinkle with ground nutmeg.

Our daughter Angie works along with another teacher who happens to be Puerto Rican, and the other day they were talking about how they had spent the Thanksgiving weekend.
This gal told Angie that it is an old Puerto Rican custom that they do not fix a big turkey dinner as is our custom to celebrate Thanksgiving, but they mix up lots and lots of a special egg nog drink and that they consume way too much of it and that they actually eat very lightly.

Anyway Angie was intrigued and curious about this drink, so this gal brought in a gallon sized milk container that was about half full of this egg nog. Angie brought it home and we all gave it a try. I must say that it was really delicious. We have no idea what all was in the recipe but it definitely had a distinct hint of some kind of rum. It was exceptionally good.

Angie was getting the recipe from the gal, but she and her husband flew back to Puerto Rico the other day as his father had suffered a heart attack.
So she will be getting that recipe in a few days when she returns.
(No the Egg Nog did not cause his heart attack)user posted image
I'd like to mix up a few gallons of that tasty treat to have available for Christmas eve and New Years.

I just got through with some Darigold eggnog, with Myers dark rum in it. Probably not as good as the home made but it'll have to do!

That really doesn't sound bad to me. I am looking forward to tasting a few different brews in the next several days.
