Title: Marlin 1894 and S&W 642
jimandsue60 - August 20, 2010 03:48 PM (GMT)
I recently bought a couple of new toys. A Smith and Wesson model # 642 which is 38 special +P and a Marlin 1894CSS in .357.
The 642 is so comfortable to wear all day long, I sometimes forget I have it tucked in.
I am having a blast shooting this little Marlin, Even with .357 is has very little recoil. I plan on hunting some hogs in Florida when we get there this fall.
A very dirty 642

Looks like your loads worked well! B)
I’m really missing my 642 right now, it’s been so hot I’m back to a pocket gun and it’s going to stay that way until the heat lets up some.

Yep the reloads worked just fine. I am hitting the 10 inch steel plate at 100 yards with the peep sights on a regular basis. My guess is the effective range of this rifle and 357 would be 150 yards max for smaller sized game.

150 for the hog hunting you mentioned Jim? If so, I’ve killed a lot of them here under different conditions using from .22 mag to 7mm rem. mag and it would have to be right in the sweet spot for a .357.

I talked to the land owner where I am going to hunt. He said the average shot for the hogs in his area is less than 75 yards. Most of the shots are behind the ear as to not spoil any meat.
I will be using 180 grain
Buffalo Bore cast bullets, that should be producing about 1850 fps out of the marlin.
He charges 150 dollars per meat hog including butchering.

Cool, where is the property located? I might me interested in that myself.
Here’s one to get you excited about some hunting when you get back. It’s the only hog I mounted and the picture was taken at our last house when I was ‘allowed’ to hang my mounts in the living room. My wife hated it and would say it scared the kid’s friends. LOL :D

Thanks Jim, it does interest me and will look into it and the distance is reasonable for us. Just posted some other mount shots in the hunting & fishing forum. B)
