Title: Main Page Revamp?

Adrninistrator - January 31, 2011 03:12 AM (GMT)
It looks like we might be able to revamp the site pretty soon, Id like your thoughts on it. The gist of it is Philip might be turning the domain name over to me, which means a new site could be built and then anyone going through the existing URL would come to the new front page instead. Ive also been in contact with someone from MoD's old days who may be willing to lend us a hand with it, hes recomended a script in particular that would allow for some interesting things.

In particular, he and I both want to get the front page set up for featuring fan made content and creations, and the script he's suggesting should be able to take care of that. I do want to have an archive link to the old site if Philip will keep that up and running for us, or if we can import the old site over in some form under maskofdestiny.com/archive. This isnt a final decision thats already been made, were still connsidering things, and I dont want you guys to be left out.

So your saying that it's going to end up something like Bzp, but slightly different.

Will everything that we've posted go away? Sorry if thats a n00bish question, I know nothing about computers.

If this will help streamline the front page and make it overall better for the site, then I'm all for it. If Philip does hand the reins to you fully, that would also cut the middle man crap and help us out. It's a win-win, IMO.

No! No! No! KEEP the old main page style! I love it the way it is! It is the classy 2001 Bionicle theme, just the way I like it!

As for the forums part. I think it needs more design added to it. It has that "InvasionFree" style to it :( . Whatever happened to the old forums where there was a bronze hau for the wallpaper in the backround for the forums? That was pretty cool.

The forums could do with more of a tweak than the main page.

But the main page's scripting is what, over 6 years old? It needs a revamp. If I'm honest. I think we could re-invent the site more that way.

Also, who is this member from MoDs "History" that has offered to help, if I may be so bold?

The forums work fine for me, and it seems less gloomy and cartoonish than the 'old MoD,' but I do want to see the option for the old Hau back... As for the front page, I thought the button to access the forums could use a little more noticability - I almost missed it when I first came here.

For the front page news, I personaly would like the style to stay about the same, with a bigger emphasis on the fan created stuff. In fact, Philip was in the middle of setting up fan content channels for us when other matters came up, and he doesnt want us to be stuck in the rut like this since he hasnt been able to complete those channels for us like he had wanted. While we have been unable to get changes done quickly these past couple years I hope nobody here will see fault in him, especially since he has paid the costs for the site these ten years and his work helped make the site so great in the first place.

Trailing off there, besides the fan content channels, I would particularly like it if It could be set up so forum members to post content directly to the front page news(My methods so far are slow-going), with the only obstruction being a staffer's approval to make sure the content is not innapropriate. The old member offering to help out, unnamed for the moment since I dont know if he'd like to be named at this time, is looking at a deviant art stlye script that could offer a number of benefits, including a sort of purchase print feature which could be usefull for generating prizes for contest and paying the site costs if any are incurred by the site revamp (And the server costs, if we go that route). Were still working on finding out fair use rules from The LEGO Company for selling artwork based on their characters, building elements, as well as pictures of brick sets.

There is a second member who was interested in helping out some months ago, I could not tell you who he is without him having some difficulties as a result, but he shared similar ideas with me and the other guy, I hope I can get him to pop by and share his thoughts too.

As for the forums here, I'd rather not get rid of them, but it is a posability that should be discussed. If we did decide to get rid of the forums altogether, I would probably run them as a seperate site and just not link to it from the front page anymore. If I have it my way, the forums will only be dis-associated if we can get a strealined way for members to interact directly with the main page. Personally Im too atached to these forums to just delete them or turn them into an archive.

On the topic of revamping the forum skin, we dont have permission to use that old hau image anymore, though I do thank the member who kindly lent it to us free of charge for that time. Ive been wanting to get a background with matoran font with phrases from the members here, what do you think of that idea? I will admit this skin/colorscheme was rather unprofesionaly pulled together by myself. Is there anyone here with some CSS knowledge that would like to try crafting a better one, I just ask if you do that you dont barrow any random images from the internet and only use what you personaly whipped up.

We definitely don't want to get rid of the forums. What'd be the point of the site then? Just news I guess? :ph43r: Anyway, I like the red colorscheme. I also like the Matoran phrases idea. :)

Posting directly to the FP you say? Hmm... Sounds like a pretty good idea.
