registering

Make sure that you read and understand the information in THE NEWBIE GUIDE. Make sure to check the CHARACTERS WE ARE/AREN'T LOOKING FOR. We do not make exceptions to the information presented in either or those places. After you have done that, just go ahead and register with your character's first and last name with proper capitalization. For example: Catherine Howard. Not all caps, not all lower case. Just regular capitalization. If you find you cannot register for your character that means one of two things: 1. They are already taken (double check the taken canon list), or 2. They have been registered for but the person has never put up an app or disappeared and we just didn't delete their account. Let an admin know ASAP, and we'll delete that account for you. From there, you can go ahead and start your application. The way applications work: There are two forms to choose from -- Traditional and Freeform. Traditional is more structured...freeform, you have a bit more free reign. You CANNOT post an application for another character until your first application has been accepted. If you have an active application in the joining process, you cannot post another one (this is true for 2nd-6th characters).

The way reservations work: once you’ve posted to reserve your canon you will have three days to post an application. When you post your application, post the following in the subject line: (Last Name, First Name)...without the parentheses. If for any reason you need longer just PM an administrator or a moderator, and let them know. We can extend the reservation to five days but no longer than that. If you don’t reserve a canon but instead decide to just post a canon bio we can’t guarantee that the character will be reserved. If someone else posts a finished bio before you have finished yours, we’ll gauge them against each other and accept the most fitting bio for that canon. If you have reserved a character and it's been past five days without you posting an application, your account will be deleted and your reservation as well, putting your character back up for grabs. No matter what, please finish your app within five days. If you need an extension, ask a mod.

DO NOT bug admins in the c-box about your application. We strive to get apps accepted as soon as possible, but bugging us about it really doesn't make us accept them any faster. That's science.

In regards to accepting apps, we will PM if there are problems with things so don't fret if you don't see an admin reply to your app. We usually handle issues with PMs. Because the admin discuss a variety of things with application, it might take a few days to get back you. Also, when you make an application for a character that is related to another character, we usually ask the driver of the established character on the board if they are okay with your application.

There are canon guidelines that you need to follow, so if someone has a mean and acerbic personality, they're not going to want to be everyone's friend and tiptoe through the tulips. Don't drastically change a canon's persona; they're like this for a reason and for plot points. Also, since we don't want 500 cousins or brothers of King Henry VIII running around, please PM before you make any character that is related to a canon. So if you are wanting to make an original character that is, indeed, related to the king, you would PM the King Henry VIII account to see if it would be all right. Same goes for if you want to make any original character related to a canon.

Character Limit: You have six freebies when it comes to characters. Then, if you feel like you need to make a seventh, you will have to wait two weeks to do so. AND, we have to see you are active with all six of your characters. Same goes for any character you make after the seventh, etc. If you drop a character, you cannot immediately app another one. Please wait a week. This is so people don't drop and create, drop and create.

activity and posting

Common courtesy to your fellow roleplayers. Go ahead and post an OOC absence notice in the General Chat forum if you're going to be gone for an extended period of time. Please don't just disappear on us! It makes us sad.

For large group threads, we usually follow a three day and then PM and skip (if the PM is unanswered) rule to keep plots moving and threads from dying.

As far as posts go...we don't expect novels, so don't worry! But one-liners...eh. As long as you are writing more than a one-liner, but less than a novel (if that makes any sense), you're golden. smile.gif Once a thread is concluded, the last person to post please put a "closed" tag at the bottom of the reply. That way, it will help the admins when we have to move threads.

There will be an activity check section every month, and it's easy! All you have to do is post whether you're here, and what characters you have. But it is not enough to reply to activity checks...we will have to see that you are truly active with your character. If you have replied to activity checks without posting in-character, we will still consider you inactive and your account will be deleted.

Regarding canons...do not take a canon if you do not intend to be active with them. They are on the canon list for a reason, and are heavily integrated into board plots, so they need to be active. FKAC now requires that you are posting once a week with your canon. That is one post every seven days. Not too bad, right?

Absences: If you are going to be absent, we have a form you will need to fill out here. If your return date falls during an activity check and you are not active with your character, your character will be archived and accounts deleted.

rating

For King and Court should hover right around PG-13/R. The time period we write in automatically makes our rating a bit dark, and of course a Court-themed RP wouldn't be quite right without a few scandalous liaisons. Just keep in mind that we have younger members and are going for a classy, intelligent interpretation of history instead of a Harlequin romance novel. wink.gif If you do, however, find a thread going into extreme R-territory for any reason (sex that doesn't fade to black, excessive violence or language), please be good enough to ask one of the staff for the password to the mature forum.

Yes, we do have a mature section. But if all you are going to write is smut or if you are going to ignore your other threads to ONLY write smut, we suggest you go to an adult board to do that kind of thing.

graphics and such

So sigs and post templates are amazing, aren't they? It makes reading posts so much more...visual? Alas, we strive to keep things uniform and pretty. So, we ask that you keep your graphics to avatars only, with the dimensions of 150 x 200. Post templates are not allowed in the IC roleplay areas. All pictures used must be able to pass for being Tudor period. AKA, no tank tops, ponytails, suits, excessive make-up, etc. It might mean cutting off pictures at the shoulders, but it will keep the Tudor theme going. I'm not going to say they need to be amazing, or that we'll get mad about less-than-stellar graphics, because we certainly won't. We just like to keep the focus on the writing, and images that aren't obviously modern help keep the entire board 'in character'.

We will not accept face claims until your application is accepted (simply to keep things from getting chaotic). If you would like to have an avatar made after posting in face claims and getting settled, be sure to ask one of our many talented graphic makers! Photobucket also provides a free service for simple crops and edits, so you might not need as much help as you think. In the event you do, however, go ahead and put up a request in the OOC.

miscellaneous

Do not IM any admin with questions about board business (modly things), even if you are our bestest buddy. Please PM the King Henry account. This helps us keep track of things and make us a more effective admin team and board.

Don't use chatspeak in posts.

Don't godmod. God-modding is controlling the actions of another player character without the permission of the driver. You cannot grab, hit, kill, or otherwise touch another character without permission or without leaving the action open for the other person to respond to (ie, say 'went to grab', 'went to hit', instead of 'Joe Bob reared his fist back and hit Jim'). You cannot god-mod in your fodder either. For example, if you did not play out in a thread with another player character something that happened, you cannot say it did happen unless you have permission. Each driver needs to be able to decide what is in character or not in character for the characters they drive. You should also not god-mod personal NPCs (for example, it wouldn't be cool to control what someone's father or grandfather did without permission).

Don't powerplay. Power-playing is when you act unrealistically and give your character more power than they should realistically have or when you exit or don't finish threads to avoid consequences for your actions. If you leave a thread to avoid realistic consequences, the admin have the right to decide how that would have played out and mediate a result so both players can continue. For example, nobody can disobey the King or shirk their duties to him and not expect something to happen. If you do something to effect His Majesty and don't want to let something happen to your character as punishment in return, that's power-playing.

Because of the nature of our roleplay any action which would have caused King Henry to impose consequences IRL, will likely cause King Henry to impose consequences in the roleplay to keep it realistic whether you like it or not as a driver. If you are unsure if your action would have consequences, PM King Henry's account and ask! Or if it's for a plot, use the plot approval board and you'll likely find out what will happen as a result of the plot. biggrin.gif

Treat others how you want to be treated...if you find you have a problem with a board member you cannot solve via PM, please contact an admin and we will help you. It takes quite a bit to rile the admins up to where you will be banned, because we are a pretty easygoing bunch! But there will be some instances where we might have to ban. If you are constantly causing other people problems, ignoring other threads to only write smut, are extremely rude to people OOC, and bugging others to post constantly (either through C-Box, PM, or IM), these are all causes for bannation. You get two warnings. If you are warned three times, we will delete your account, archive your characters, and you will not be allowed back.

Please note we are an intermediate to advanced site. If your writing needs some help, we will accept you and we can help you out! But usually, if the writing in your application is very basic, we will not accept you because we do not think you would fit in to our RPG here.

Please make sure you read and understand the basic information in the History Handbook before posting!

If you have any board business, do not contact the admins via IM. Please contact all of us via PM, and we will discuss and get back with you. The code phrase for applications is for you to list your favorite historical event.

These rules are updated as necessary and should be considered current. Rules updated on September 1, 2011.
