The boat came in just as the noon meal was being wrapped up in the commune, a wide, shallow-hulled vessel, sails stowed to prevent the wind from pushing them back downstream as the motor chugged along, pushing them gently into dock.

The members of the commune who had nothing immediately pressing to do watch them docking. As they got within jumping distance from the dock, the motor cut out, and two humans in leather dusters and wide-brimmed black hats made the jump, hauling lines that, once ashore, let them pull the ship in and tie it down, while a bangaa handed them the other end of a broad gangplank. The templar disembarked first, followed by a Nu Mou and a human in Saffron Knight uniforms; suits of modern cut, brown trimmed with gold, wearing ties of bands of red, blue and gold. The human was an unusual one; not even in his thirties, yet, tanned by the sun, and yet hair as white as the oldest village elder among the human race.

The rest of the crew disembarked; a pair of moogles and a Lipan. The human Knight waved, flanked by the wilder-looking of the men in the overcoats, who was now carrying a rifle the bangaa had passed him, and the viera, who seemed to also be a saffron knight.

"Good morning, Ms. Hardy. How's life in Hell's Country?"
"I'd ask you the same, Headmaster Coultier." The commune's administrator smirked, offering a hand to shake. "... So who's all this? I thought you were coming with a carriage."
"Gunners from Clan Musin have taken a habit of guarding the only road in and out of here. I felt the boat was safer." Malvolio smiled, and began introducing people.

The viera woman offered a friendly nod and a smile when he came to her first. "This is Loretta Lenore. She's a Saffron Knight in the truest sense of the second word. Used to train with Eddy, if I recall correctly."
"You do, headmaster."
The Nu Mou offered his own nod, absent-minded as could be expected. "Professor Nate Harrison. An expert on Law Magic. It's his boat."
"Charmed, m'lady."
Rebecca giggled. "I'm not a noblewoman, Professor. Just good with numbers."

A sweeping gesture brought the wild-looking human into attention. He was well-dressed, though he had the beard and longer hair of a man not frequently dealing with such haughty customers as the Saffron Knights. Under his duster, he wore an Adman Vest. "This is Sage Goodman, one of the Lay Guard. The Professor's bodyman. Best shot with a rifle I've ever met who wasn't a moogle."
"Howdy."
He gestured to the nearest moogle, dressed in a fine suit with a ribbon-tie and a bowler hat, all in black. "Larchmont Cantice. Mister Cantice is the captain of the Professor's ship."
"Pleased to meet you, Kupo. This here's my navigator and engineer, Mister Pablo Algheri."
"Kupo." Pablo looked it, half-covered in soot and oil from the trip upriver. Understandably, he wasn't shaking hands.
Malvolio gestured again, this time to the other duster-wearing human, who we could now see was carrying a rather fine blade, and wearing armour of a decent make under his jacket. "Mister Dorian Pinkerton, another crewer on the Nassau, and Mister Rolf Dangrel. I understand the two of you go way back?"
"I wasss Misster Pinkerton'sss handler, when he wasss a gladiator." The templar shook Rebecca's hand in both of his own massive ones, and she could see he bore none of the marks of a particular templar, only those of the totema themselves."

"Well, looks like you've got quite the crew here, Malvolio." Todd interjected, standing a little forward. "... I'd borrow you and the professor, if you don't mind."
"I don't mind." Came the reply. "But where Professor Harrison goes, Mister Pinkeron and Mister Goodwin follow."
"Very well. I'd like you two to meet my students."

At a gesture, the pair of them would hopefully step forward. "This is Gretta Dean, and... I'm sorry, Zal, I have the hardest time with your proper name."

"Zallaurot Five Middle Names Messersch-Envera. Just Zal will be fine."

Malvolio made a point of shaking Zal's hand, and, in reaching, he briefly exposed a complex tattoo on the skin of his wrist, which vanished as his arm lowered and the sleeve returned to its proper place. "Ah, yes. The adept. And the diviner... madam. I've heard a rumour you're ghosting for the Barona Gazetta."
"The Gazette doesn't even know that, headmaster. I'd say you were spying on me."
"When someone shows that sort of talent for fortune telling it occasionally wanders into my scope, yes."

The group, including the students, carried on down the road into town. "I've heard a rumour, Mister Messersch-Envera, that you've got quite a lot of... shall we say... talent, and you aren't sure how to use it."

"I wouldn't say a lot. It's plenty more modest than that. Just some control issues is all." His voice sounded strained; in truth, he was trying pretty hard not to have lightning shooting out of his fingertips right then.

"Ah, the perils of the Adeptus Manus. Isn't it so, Headmaster, with yourself?"
"When I was a teenager, perhaps. There are certain measures that can be taken, of course."

The inside of the archives was cool, somewhat dim in the daylight; the air was still, and it was clear that the "cool" was a result of the size of the building and the fact that only the outer shell could be warmed by the sun, rather than any mechanism or enchantment. "And so, Mister Quinn. What can we do for you?"
"You can tell me what you want. Nassau is a research vessel."
"The leave of the commune have Professor Harrison and the crew of the boat remain here and conduct research into Meta-Legal Manic Harmonics and Destructive Resonance."
Gretta arrived at the laymen's terms before Todd did. "You want to run a study on why Law Magic doesn't exist in the jagds."
"Yes."
Todd thought about it. Though often forgotten, and thought of as little more than a librarian, he was a founding member of the Commune and his voice still carried the full weight of any of the members. "... It'll have to go to vote. There'll be concessions, naturally. I for one will want copies of anything Harrison comes up with on the subject. A free subscription to the journal Metaphysics for as long as the ship remains at dock. Rebecca will expect everyone involved to help carry their weight, the way the rest of us do. Professor Harrison or one of his cohorts will have to help me instruct my two students."

Malvolio looked the two over carefully. "... Weren't you two START students?"

Zallaurot shrugged. "I was for about four days. Got my uniform still, somewhere. How long were you in anyway, Greta?"

"Ah... about a year and a half, I think. I got pulled a few months into my grade and sent to Balamb for the pilot class of their Void Arcana program."
Malvolio nodded. "I wrote the curriculum for that program, before I realized the program's intention. And I am sure that the Professor would be willing to spare an instructor."
The Nu Mou nodded a slow, Nu Mou nod. "Yes. Mister Cantice is a folk mage; an adept. And I know that either I or Loretta could keep teaching Ms. Dean here Void Arcana."

"That'd be mighty swell. I should probably say ahead of time that I'm pretty much entirely untrained, so you'll have your work cut out for you," Zallaurot said to Larchmont Cantice.

The moogle chuckled. "Well, that's fine, kupo. Most people are pretty much entirely untrained."

Rebecca took a step forward. "... There'll be open debate tonight, right after supper at the Knife. Until then, I'd like you all to pair off with someone who lives here and get a look at what living here means."

Sage Goodwin took a half step foward. "I'll go with Zal, I'm supposing."

Zallaurot nodded. "Okay, I'll show you my room first, then I'm off to help clean up noon meal."

"Alright. Mister Cantice, would you take my rifle back to the boat, please?"
"You got it."

Sage stuck his hands in his pockets, following Zal. "So, you eat all yer meals at the same time, eh?"

"Yeah, Rodney and the others find it easier to do it all at once. 'sides, if everyone ate at their own times the kitchen would always be a mess."

"I guess that would've been too much work? Maybe? I mean, I'm not sure how exactly the Commune happened, but it might've been that when they were putting the buildings down they didn't have the time for a kitchenette. I mean, our rooms are pretty bare."

"It's a bit of a resource thing. None of us are construction experts, so we had to pretty much make do with the buildings we had."
Rebecca had intercepted them, joined by Larchmont. They both needed to use the main road, after all. "... And having the main meal out of the one kitchen makes it easier to make sure everyone gets their fair share."
"And what if I don't want Roast Beef that night?"
"Rodney usually has two meats at each meal anyway, but I guess you're out of luck."
"... Y'all are communists."
