The general idea of this is to be able to combine a perk with your skill and gain a new skill mode for it. The process is generally the same as combining perks, but it will be a bit harder. You have to think about what the perk does in relation to your skill and make something that is convincing. Perk combining is pretty loose in this area, so Skill Modules will be a lot harder.
Let’s get on with examples. Let’s use Helen as an example. Helen’s skill is the ability to stretch her limbs over great distances.
Skill: Elongation – Using yoki to change her skin, muscles and bones, Helen can stretch her limbs over great distances to attack from afar or constrict opponents.
Let’s say Helen has these perks.
Stretching – Allows Helen to stretch her limbs over long distances without exhausting additional energy or causing damage to her own body.
Speed Action – Once per opponent, Combat Attributes are increased 10%.
Twisting – Helen can twist her limbs around, giving her increased ability to manoeuvre around enemies.
Aggressive Yoki – Helen’s yoki release is aggressive in nature, giving her increased ability to intimidate opponents the higher her yoki gets.
Looking at these perks, I can tell right away that Aggressive Yoki and Stretching wouldn’t work when making a skill module. Why? Because Stretching works directly with the skill in question, it allows her to use her skill effectively without downsides at low yoki releases. If you were to combine this perk with Elongation, nothing would happen. Aggressive Yoki wouldn’t work because it’s a perk that affects Yoki, while Helen’s skill is physical in nature. Nothing would be gained from combining them together that couldn’t be achieved alone.
But Speed Action and Twisting can be combined to create two different skill modes. Speed Action for example could create:
Burst Module: Elongation – Helen can quickly increase the speed and power of her limb stretching, creating a quick, long range stab that’s hard to defend against. The downside is that Helen can only stretch her limbs in one direction and the range is reduced.
Using the perk Twisting would create:
Twister: Helen can rotate and twist her limbs several times and hold it in place. When released, Helen’s arm twists like a drill creating a deadly attack.
So that’s the process of creating skill modes. Once you have a few, you can undergo a process to combine the skill modes into something even more powerful. Combining skill modes is just as strict as creating them, perhaps even more so. Let’s get on with the example.
Combining Burst Mode and Twister together would get you something like this:
Burst Twister – Helen can now extend the range of her Twister attack; she can rotate her arms and hold it, then afterwards shoot her arm towards the enemy and release it at the same time, creating a long range, powerful attack. The attack gains added power from shooting off towards the enemy.
That’s all there is to it. Pretty easy, huh? Some skills are obviously easier to work with than others, so it’s up to you to convince me that it works and makes sense.
