At the start of the day the Sens farm team was 8 players over the league limit. At the end of a busy day for GM Sinclair he was able to get his farm team under the league limit.
The first trade of the day was a minor deal. The Sens sent tough guy Colton Orr to the St.Louis Blues for a 7th round pick in the 2010 draft. This was trade 1 of 4 on the day. A few hours later the Sens got a call from the Flames. They were interested in Shane Hnidy and Miroslav Satan. Minutes later a deal was made. In return the Sens got 3 more picks, a 5th and 7th in the 2010 draft and a 3rd in 2011. So thats 3 players down and 5 to go. Next trade in the making was the longest of the day. The Sens and Coyotes were in talks all day and finally at 8:24pm a deal was put into place. The Coyotes would receive 3 players while the Sens were able to add 3 more draft picks. Chris Gratton, Fernando Pisani and Daniel Tjarnqvist were off to the desert while 2nd and 3rd round draft picks in 2011 and a 5th in 2012 were off to the Nations Capital. The count is now 6 players out with 2 to go and 7 picks to the Sens over the next 3 years. Finally the Lightning were last team the Sens made a trade with. The Sens got a 4th round draft pick in the 2010 draft while sending there last 2 farm players away to the Bolts, Jarkko Ruutu and Brad May.
What all these trades have is done make room for the 2 rookies that the Sens are awaiting there arrival of and hopefully a backup goalie for Trevor Cann.
The Sens may have a 5th trade on the day. As of now it involves Sergei Kostitsyn and the Devils are the team who wants him. The Sens own his rights to sign the 21 year old right winger who made 816k last season. The Sens are in the process of signing him with no word from his agent yet. All the Sens are saying is that the deal is a 3 year contract. "If we cant find the right price to sign Sergei then we will have to trade him to the Devils" said GM Sinclair when asked by reporters about the winger o his way home from the office.
