The proper definition is: A method of drawing so as to produce the illusion of the extension of an object or figure into space. Also the technique of depicting an object lying at an angle of the picture – plane by means of perspective devices (eg making it narrower and paler as it recedes).
And all that basically means that when you draw something, you make the proportions exaggerated or extremely different to show a difference in view.
When I had to draw something for foreshortening in my art class, I drew a baby and the feet are in the foreground of the pictures. The feet are really, really big, but the rest of the baby - as it recedes into the background - gets much, much smaller.
I'll have to take a picture and put it up on deviantART so that you can see. I've been thinking about taking pictures of my big artworks that can't be scanned and putting them on my account on dA.
