(Update) MANILA, Philippines – Communist guerrillas ambushed a patrol car east of Manila, killing a policeman, wounding two others, and apparently seizing three officers, authorities said Sunday.

The New People's Army ambush Saturday near Rodriguez town in Rizal province, about 40 kilometers east of Manila, was the latest skirmish in the decades-old Marxist rebellion and among the closest attacks to the Philippine capital.

About 60 rebels detonated a land mine then opened fire with rifles and grenade launchers on a passing patrol car carrying six policemen near the village of Macabud, police chief Senior Superintendent Ireneo Dordas said.

One policeman was killed instantly and two were wounded in a brief exchange of fire, he told The Associated Press by phone.

Three policemen were missing and believed taken captive by the rebels, Dordas said.

The guerrillas are still holding captive an army officer, 1st Lt. Vicente Cammayo, in the southern Philippines. Rebel spokesman Rigoberto Sanchez said in a statement that the guerrillas delayed Cammayo's release early this month because of ongoing military offensives.

The 120,000-strong military has continued to weaken the rebels with relentless offensives aimed at meeting President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's target of turning one of Asia's longest communist insurgencies into a common police concern by 2010, military spokesman Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres said.

Government offensives reduced the number of guerrillas by nearly a tenth to 5,239 and reduced their rural strongholds from 87 to 62 last year, Torres said.

The communist rebellion began in the late 1960s and reached its peak in the mid-'80s when the number of guerrillas reached 26,000. Since then, the rebels' ranks have thinned due to battle casualties, surrenders and factionalism.

Peace talks brokered by Norway stalled in 2004 when the guerrillas accused the Philippine government of campaigning to persuade the United States to add them to its list of terrorist organizations. - AP

Communist rebels confirm 3 policemen abducted

Updated January 06, 2009 10:36 AM

MANILA (AP) -Communist guerrillas said they took three policemen captive following an ambush on a patrol car east of Manila that killed an officer and wounded two others.

About 60 New People's Army rebels hiding in foxholes detonated a land mine and opened fire on the car carrying six police officers Saturday, said Rizal provincial police chief Ireneo Dordas.

It was the latest attack in the 40-year Marxist rebellion and one of the closest to the Philippine capital.

In an e-mailed statement, the rebels said the remaining three officers led by Inspector Rex Cuntapay "immediately surrendered to the Red fighters and were taken as prisoners of war."

The rebels didn't immediately make any demands for the return of the officers.

That's the purpose of the Barako AEV.

Let's just wish that both sides will adhere to the Geneva Convention when dealing with their captives.

Both sides must uphold human rights at all times.

Anyway, the war is temporary.

Sooner than later, the war will end and both will work together in fostering peace and prosperity.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Eight policemen and a civilian were killed in an ambush staged by suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels in Basilan yesterday.

Basilan police provincial commander Senior Superintendent Salik Macapantar said the policemen were on patrol when they were waylaid in Barangay Benembengan, Sumisip town.

“A team of our police forces were patrolling when they were ambushed by more or less 100 rebels. They were all wiped out,” Macapantar said.

Macapantar failed to identify the victims but said those killed were a ranking police officer, seven policemen and a still unidentified civilian.

Initial reports said the slain policemen were led by a certain Inspector Jannatul.

Macapantar said the bodies of the victims were recovered by the responding lawmen and were immediately buried following the Muslim burial tradition.

Macapantar said the police Regional Mobile Group (RMG) immediately launched pursuit operations against the gunmen who were initially identified as combined “lost command” MILF rebels and Abu Sayyaf bandits operating near Sumisip.

On the other hand, two military engineers were also ambushed by suspected MILF gunmen in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan late Saturday.

Regional military spokeswoman Lt. Stefani Cacho said Army T/Sgt. Luciano Abcede and Pfc. Danny Salian were shot by unidentified gunmen as they emerged out of their detachment at 55th Engineering Brigade near the Tipo-Tipo Elementary School.

Cacho said the two soldiers were killed while on their way to buy food at a nearby store.

Abcede and Salian were among the soldiers assigned at the Powerline Co. of the Army’s Engineering Brigade tasked to repair and rehabilitate the Tipo-Tipo school building.

The military were trying to determine the motive of the attack but did not rule out the possibility that Abu Sayyaf was behind the killing.

Lt. Col. Paul Regencia, spokesman for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) National Development Support Command, said the initial investigation revealed gunmen from the MILF were behind the attack.

AFP spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner condemned the attack and said the two victims were non-combatants engaged in community development projects. – With James Mananghaya, Edith Regalado

R.I.P.

There's really no DISTINCTION between ASG, MILF Lost Command and MILF Regular. They are one and the same terrorist group!

These low lives are on the go again killing our law enforcers. There should be an all out operation to hunt these terrorists employing military capabilities to the teeth that not one of them would live. AR15firing.gif

May the souls of these dedicated law enforcers rest in peace for they have died in the line of duty. THEY DIED NOT IN VAIN. pdff_sternsaludo.gif
