Physical Appearance:A tall man, with brown hair. James is well built, but not overly muscular. Despite his musculature, he remains rather thin in stature. His hazel eyes have a new luster to them thanks to several months of dedicated hard drinking. His once pale skin now a tarnished bronze color from being at sea and sleeping outside. Both his hair and scraggly beard are unkempt and frequently unclean. His hands have also gained calluses to them thanks to the labor he took up during his time with The Black Pearl.
scars/distinguishing characteristics: Normal Attire: He once wore his military uniform despite the fact it had been tattered and ragged. Now the only part of his once proud uniform that he keeps are the boots (because their sturdy), the coat (because it’s warm), and the sword that was made for him by one William Turner (a reminder of who he once was). The rest of his attire consists of a dark breeches, and a varsity of worn lightweight shirts.
Personality: Norrington is a man of contradictions. On one side is the upbringing he had been taught. To that end he believes in fair play, serving others, and chivalry. He believes that hard work will bring success and that one should be a gentleman when it comes towards the fairer sex. However since his fall a second part of him has done things in order to survive. He has double crossed, cheated, served only himself, and slept in filth.. Thus this blending has caused a much different man.
Now independent of military orders, he does what he needs to do to survive. Internally this causes much self loathing. He has however retained most of his more gentlemanly manner with women. He isn’t above cheating any more, but generally reserves that for only dire circumstances. His troubling time has brought out his dry, sarcastic sense of humor to an extreme. He now has a habit of making pithy remarks and glib insults, usually coupled with drinking.
To sum this up; there are two sides of Norrington battling internally. Which one will win in the end…it remains unclear.
Strengths: A military man it’s no secret that James skills lie in all things martial. He is a fine swordsman, ranking as one of the best in the military and has more than enough skill to best pirates. He also posses a tactical mind able to strategize and out think threats as well as outfight them. Also having worked his way up in the navy he also knows his way around a ship.
Weaknesses: Despite all he has lost, he still remains a man of pride. When this pride is hurt, it can cause him to lash out and forgo the more logical part of his brain in favor of raw emotions. He is stubborn to the point of running a ship into a tropical storm. Also, despite his loss of station he still retains a haughty “holy-ier than though” air about him, that frequently puts him at odds with the criminal element.
History: James’s mother died in childbirth having him, and his father brought him up to believe that there were only two things in life he had to do. The first was to bring honor and prestige to the Norrington family and to never tarnish it. The second was of course to find a woman to settle down with and bring about more heirs to the Norrington family.
Despite these sometimes harsh goals, James idolized his father. So much so that he once, stowed aboard his fathers ship, whilst they were in a hunt for a notorious pirate. During the scuffle, James fell overboard and one of the pirates crew jumped in to save him. His father would always look down upon him for this for the rest of his life, saying that he would have rather his son drowned than be indebted to a pirate. This would lead James to adopt his father hatred for pirates as his own.
Still aching for his fathers approval he would join the navy as soon as he could and worked his way up the ranks achieving at a great pace. By the time his post had been changed from the English homestead to the Caribbean colonies, he was one of youngest Lieutenants in the Royal Navy. After a few years more of work, he soon had risen to the rank of Commodore and was poised to marry the governors daughter, Miss Elizabeth Swan.
However that was soon torn asunder in what James calls “ That bloody pirate business.” And when it was over, he had lost Elizabeth to the blacksmith William Turner and he had new prey to hunt; the rogue known as Jack Sparrow.
Perhaps his loss of Elizabeth made him take his job of pursuing Jack Sparrow a bit too seriously. He pursued the pirate with fervor to the point where he chased the pirate into an oncoming tropical storm. He lost his ship and most of his crew in that incident. Disgraced, he resigned his post and fell into a spiral of rage and depression.
Found in a drunken stupor by his one time nemesis, Jack Sparrow, he soon found himself aboard the mans crew of the Black Pearl. His intentions originally to kill the man that had brought him to this point, his intention were waylaid as he made the re-acquaintance of a female pirate he had first met and tried to hang, Genesis Morgan. Eventually a bond formed between them, he might have called them friends. Though he would never admit it he perhaps something more for the female rogue however that which might have blossomed was quashed due to complications once again stemming from the ever present thorn in his side known as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Reaching the breaking point with the Captain, Norrington left the Black Pearl and once again returns to the rum soaked streets of Tortuga. The man once filled with convictions now at a personal crossroads. Too civil for pirates and too brash for military life, Norrington must figure out who he is, before he knows where he’s going.
Sample Roleplay: Here he was again.
His eyes were focused on the bottle of rum, One of many empties around him now more than half gone as the rest of the world seemed out of focus. James didn’t care much about what was going on. He was merely lost in his own thoughts. Eventually he came back down to earth and saw that a female had slid by him at the bar. She was dressed in tawdry clothes and had on far too much makeup for a proper lady, but she wasn’t one…that was the point he supposed.
The more civil part of him would have merely excused himself with a false smile and moved on. The coarse part of him wanted to tell her to take her whoring ways and fine some more desperate scumbag. Instead he merely gave her a gentle nudge away.
“Wat’s the mattah luv?” The woman asked with false concern
“None of your concern, and I assure you Madam, whatever your intentions you would hate me in the morning.” He said taking another heavy swig of his bottle.
She tried to get closer to him again as he then no longer had the patience for niceties as he grabbed her wrist and said
“ Go now,and leave me to my drink.” And then pushed her away back into the crowd of people.
“ Suit ye’self.” She said back to him with venom in her voice.
The tavern faded once again into background noise as time seemed to slow to a crawl as he was then suddenly shoved.Brought back to reality he looked at who shoved him and saw a man a bit older and more ragged than himself, now clutching the girl from before as he said
“ You talkin’ bad about my woman.”It was then that James for a brief minute became unstuck in time. All he could here were vague blurs and shouting. When he came to the man that had shoved him was now on the ground with a bloody face and he was standing over him with bruised knuckles. He then went back to the bar and picked up his half finished bottle of rum and turned it up to his lips.
The he put it down and walked over to the beaten man, pouring what was left of the bottle on his beaten face.
He was tired of this. The drinking, the fighting, the uncertainty. However it was all he knew now. With a sigh and a subconscious tip of the head to the painted up lady of the evening. He then disappeared into the streets of Tortuga.
