Physical Appearance: Lady Roseanna Bartlemy possesses the type of beauty which is typical of a Lady born and raised in England. She is quite small for her age, at around 5”1, and is rather petite. Her hair is a lustrous golden colour, and falls past her shoulders in loose curls. She occasionally wears it up, but usually only for visits or special occasions. Her large grey eyes can often convey a look a of perfect innocence, whereas on a rare occasion, they will betray her mischievous side, or her stubborn one. Everything about her is slim, although she has recently begun to develop a much more womanly figure, which has started to attract the attentions of young men.
Everything about Roseanna’s appearance marks her out as a fine lady, notably her pale skin and delicate hands which have clearly never seen a days hard work in her life. She also carries herself in a way which makes her background completely obvious – she walks with her back straight and her hands folded in front of her, or behind her back, either looking straight ahead, or with her eyes cast demurely downwards, depending on the situation. Even in plainer attire, her breeding is obvious to everyone she meets.
Scars/distinguishing characteristics: N/A
Normal Attire: Roseanna wants for nothing when it comes to clothing, but she is not overly vain over her appearance. She gladly wears whatever is presented to her on a morning, but generally thinks nothing of it – in her opinion; there are more important things in life than clothes. For this reason, her godmother generally chooses her clothing for her. Her normal attire is a dress with a full skirt and a corset underneath – but not tied so tightly that she cannot breathe - she simply would not allow herself that kind of discomfort just so her waist might appear smaller. She tends to prefer more neutral colours, although for gatherings or balls, she will wear a more showy dress if that is what is presented to her.
Personality:Roseanna is the kind of girl who cares more about other people than herself. Her kind nature does not mean that she is easily manipulated, however. She is kind to those who need it, but rather guarded against anyone she feels may attempt to take advantage of her. While she still sometimes dwells on the past, she generally embraces life, believing that it is unwise to waste even a minute of it. Because of this, she is generally a very pleasant person to be around, happy to both speak and listen, and is fairly confident without being loud around people she knows, and understandably and somewhat charmingly shy with strangers. She is quite a brave character, and will not think twice about putting herself in danger, however, this can sometimes turn to recklessness.
Roseanna is a dreamer. She is always thinking of places and ways of escaping. It is not that she dislikes her life with the Harrington’s, but she wishes to be completely free, and she still doesn’t feel as though she completely belongs there. She doesn’t make this fact obvious, however, for fear that her godmother will begin pushing her to find a husband – she has been dropping little hints for a while now. Following on from this, it is clear that Roseanna does not wish to marry. She is fully aware of how people view women, and she has no desire to be trapped by a husband, especially one whom she has not chosen herself.
Strengths:Kind nature – This could also be seen as a disadvantage in some cases, but not for Roseanna. She may be kind hearted, but she is not easily manipulated. Therefore, her kind nature makes her extremely likeable as a person, and sought after in society.
Intelligence – While she may be a dreamer, underneath there is a good brain. It is difficult to fool Roseanna, and she can put together an extremely good argument when required. She often hides her intelligence, however, preferring to keep quiet and observe everything and create her judgements from afar rather than becoming involved in situations.
Bravery – Roseanna is not afraid of many things, and is happy to try any challenge life throws at her. Because of her past, living every moment as though it is her last is important to her, and she refuses to be afraid of many things which might normally frighten a young girl.
Weaknesses: Reckless – Roseanna’s bravery is commendable, her recklessness is not. Whenever she is not being closely watched she will consistently walk the fine line between bravery/daring and stupidity. She has a tendency to get herself into dangerous situations, and possibly the worst thing about this is not that she is oblivious to the danger, she knows there is danger – she just doesn’t care.
Stubborn – Roseanna is normally a very placid person, but there will be occasions where she feels very strongly about something and will become extremely stubborn, refusing to be swayed or listen to the other person’s point of view. Sometimes this is taken to be disobedience, and gets her into trouble – but as she says, she ‘can’t help it if she feels very strongly about something, can she? *Innocent shrug*’
Desire for freedom – While this isn’t a bad thing, necessarily, it can lead Roseanna to seek out her freedom – which has lead her into trouble in the past. She dislikes being cooped up in the house, and so often wanders off by herself so she can feel some of that sought after freedom for a while – but will inevitably walk straight into trouble.
History: Lady Roseanna Bartlemy was born to Lord Robert and Lady Charlotte Bartlemy on a sunny afternoon in June, in a grand manor house on the south coast of England. Her parents had wanted to include the name Anna in her name somewhere, and when she was born her mother commented that she looked like a ‘perfect English rose’, and so the name Roseanna was presented to the tiny baby. For six years, Roseanna was brought up with all of the breeding of a fine lady, spending time with her mother and her governess, and often with her god brother James, who is two and a half years her senior. Her childhood was very happy; she discovered a fondness for being outdoors, singing, and the sea. She loved taking walks on the beach with her parents, and occasionally James, but longed to sail on them properly. Therefore, as soon as she was old enough, her father, who loved sailing and had some kind of high standing position with the EITC, would take her out on a boat – and this was where she felt the true freedom she loved.
Her life took a drastic turn when she was seven years old. Her mother fell pregnant again, and everyone was delighted. However, as the pregnancy progressed, it became clear that something was very wrong. Her mother became very ill and weak, and went into premature labour. She died giving birth to the baby girl, who was named Maria, however she sadly followed her mother less than a day later. The loss crushed Lord Robert, and Roseanna couldn’t quite grasp what had happened. It soon became clear to her that her mother was gone, and she became a shell of her former happy, chatty self. As her father threw himself into work, spending more and more time sailing to and from the Caribbean, it was left to Roseanna’s godparents to look after her, and for James to try and bring her back to life a little. Eventually she came round a little. She has never mentioned this to anybody, but her mother appeared to her in a dream one night, and chastised her gently for being sad all the time, instead of enjoying every minute of this precious life. After that, she began to regain some of her old spirit, and embrace life.
When she was eleven, tragedy struck again as her father went missing. He was sailing to the Caribbean, and the ship was set upon by pirates. He was never found, but he is presumed to have died at sea, leaving Roseanna completely alone. Her godparents became her guardians, and continued to raise her in a way that suited her position – and while she was and still is sad to have lost him, she still cling to the hope that he may still be out there somewhere.
When she was fourteen, she and her guardians moved to the Caribbean, and began to live in a grand manor in Port Royal, so Robert could remain better connected with the EITC without having to constantly travel backwards and forwards, which held many risks, and also so he could keep an eye on Roseanna, who was going through a rather wilful stage.
Now that she is sixteen, her godmother is introducing her to the high society of Port Royal, rather hoping that she may find an eligible husband – although it is clear to Roseanna that she is hoping that Roseanna may take an interest in her own son, as she feels that they are a great match. While Roseanna loves him dearly, he is like a brother to her, and she longs to remain unmarried and free – and freedom is something she is determined to find sooner or later.
Sample Roleplay: (This isn’t actually from an RP, BUT I think it’s a better writing sample than most of my RP posts, because it has more dialogue between characters (: )
How fitting, that it should end here, where it began.
She stands in the middle of the stage, looking out into the silent auditorium. Her eyes hover over the plush red seats, the worn carpet. They follow the weaving trail of the gilt carvings up the side of the boxes to the ceiling, where elaborately carved comic and tragic masks gaze down, observing the whole theatre with their never-blinking eyes. She turns slowly to her left, taking in the heavy velvet curtain, the scenery and props stacked in the wings ready for the night’s performance, the racks of costumes. Her back to the audience now, she observes the backdrop, committing it to memory along with everything else. A disturbance to her left. She peers into the gloomy wings, and sees Iskander making his way around props and scenery to the edge of the stage. He stands just offstage, watching her. She smiles, and faces the front once more.
“It’s funny,” she says, lifting a pale hand into the air and watching the dust particles, caught in the bright light of the follow spot ahead of her, swirl and move as her hand cuts through the air. “But no matter what time of day it is, in the theatre it is always twilight. It is as though that moment where day sinks into night is captured and preserved forever, in this magical bubble. It means that no matter what is happening outside, in here you can forget about everything in your safe twilit world.” She lets her hand drop. Her voice lowers to a whisper. “But sometimes real life finds a way in,” she says, distractedly. “Then again, life is but a walking shadow…”
“A poor played that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more.” Iskander finishes, his eyes not leaving hers. “Are you sure it’s wise to quote this here?”
She laughs, and it reverberates eerily in the empty theatre. “I think this theatre has had more than it’s fair share of bad luck. We should be safe, I think.”
“Perhaps you’re right,” he says, smiling, then stiffens.
“What is it?” she asked anxiously.
“The theatre echoes with the ghosts of past performances and performers,” he said, quoting her earlier comment.
A single tear rolls down her cheek, silver in the radiance of the spotlight.
“I’m sorry,” he says, fearfully.
“It’s alright,” she reassures him, not moving from her spot in the centre of the stage. “It’s mostly because I’m happy. This is how I want it to end.”
“I suppose…” he says, a sob threatening to choke him. “I suppose if it must end, then this is the place.”
“You know it must end,” she says, then gasps as pain shoots through her body. He rushes forward to support her.
“Are you sure you can do this?” he asks, the tears flowing freely now.
“Yes,” she says, smiling through her own tears. “I have to. This is my curtain call.”
She shakes off his protective arms and steps into the spotlight. She opens her mouth and begins to sing, the exquisite notes making their way up and out, into the silvery light.
