When Professor Charles Xavier had survived a potentially fatal encounter with the Phoenix, some thought the worst was over. With Scott missing, presumed dead, and Jean lost to the Phoenix, all seemed lost.

With the Cure dividing the mutant community and Magneto's Brotherhood kicking up a stink, it was only a matter of time before things boiled over. Boy... did they boil over....

After converting the Phoenix to his cause, Magneto embarked on his most ambitious plan to date: attacking Worthington Labs on Alcatraz Island. Moving the famed Golden Gate Bridge, Magneto led an army of his loyal followers to Alcatraz Island to destroy the facility and find the boy from whom the Cure had been developed. They were met by the facilities human guards... and the X-Men. What happened next was unexpected.

As the sides fought, Magneto prepared to unleash the Phoenix on them. However, the Phoenix, or rather Jean, had other ideas. It seemed Jean was fighting the dominant force of the Phoenix and was more than a little reluctant to fight against them. However, the Phoenix wasn't about to give up the body without a fight. In a fit of rage the Phoenix/Jean turned on the Brotherhood, killing off roughly thirty of their members before flying off in a rage. Those left behind in the rubble and destruction could hardly believe their luck.

A year has passed since that fateful day. Jean Grey disappeared following the events of Alcatraz as she attempted to fight the Phoenix by herself. Realising she needed help, Jean returned to New York City in the hopes of returning the the Institute. After being found wandering by Alkali Lake in a daze, Scott has spent the past year a broken man, trying to make sense of his life. Assuming Jean was dead, Scott found comfort in the arms of the Hellfire Club's Emma Frost.

Recently it has been made public knowledge that the Cure is useless, and the human population is waiting for another assault from Magento and his Brotherhood. The Human-Mutant Alliance is campaigning for understanding between humans and mutants, while the Friends of Humanity are attempting to increase the divide between the two groups. Even New York's underworld seems to be getting in on the action, although that might be because territory is involved.

In this time of confusion, what side will you pick? Do you follow Xavier and his dream for a peaceful world? Are you a member of Magneto's Brotherhood? Or are you just an average Joe trying to make a living?

It's just a clean black slate, waiting to be filled...
