Village Hidden in the Leaves; Konohagakure Konohagakure located in the Land of Fire, is the main hidden village in the series and one of the five great villages. As such, it has a Kage as its leader, known as the Hokage. The majority of the major characters live there, and it is one of the most powerful hidden villages. Village Hidden in the Mist; Kirigakure Kirigakure is one of the five great hidden villages and is located in the Land of Water. Its leader is the Mizukage. Little is known about Kirigakure, except that its ninja specialize in water-based jutsu. However, it would also seem that many of its ninja wield swords, based on flashbacks in the anime. In the past, the graduation exam for becoming Genin was rather inhumane: students who had been friends, trained together, and ate from the same table, were pitted against one another in fights to the death. Kakashi mentioned that for this exam, the village earned the nickname the Village Hidden in the Bloody Mist. This gruesome method was cut short, however, when Zabuza Momochi, a boy who had failed to pass the preliminary exam to even attend the ninja academy, went mad and killed all of the students in that year's graduating class. Village Hidden in the Sand; Sunagakure Sunagakure is one of the five great ninja villages, and as such has a Kage, known as the Kazekage, as its leader. The symbol on their headband is of an hourglass. With its military forces being scaled down by the Land of Wind's feudal lord, the Fourth Kazekage realized that they had to increase the quality of each ninja to maintain a military force. Gaara is just one result of that. As more time passed, the lord started commissioning Konoha with requests he should have been making to Sunagakure. On top of that, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Fourth Kazekage realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing, so he joined forces with Otogakure in an attempt to destroy Konoha and force the lord to re-establish Sunagakure's military force if he wished for his country to continue existing. With the failure of the attack and the death of the Fourth Kazekage caused by the betrayal of Otogakure, Sunagakure re-allied with Konoha, and Gaara, Temari and Kankuro assisted Konoha during the mission to retrieve Sasuke. Village Hidden in the Sound; Otogakure Otogakure was founded by Orochimaru as a part of the Land of Sound, and is run by him. Not much is known about it: what is certain is that it actually consists of a series of lairs, located both within the Sound country and away from it, which Orochimaru switches between every week. Other than that, and the fact that its ninja specialize in techniques involving manipulation of sound waves, as well as using a cursed seal to increase their power, little else is known about it. Although he is the leading ninja of Otogakure, Orochimaru isn't a Kage, despite his equivalent power level. The reason for this is because the five Kages of the five great Hidden Villages don't acknowledge Otogakure, and certainly would not acknowledge a criminal like Orochimaru. With Orochimaru's defeat at the hands of Sasuke Uchiha, the various bases formerly under Orochimaru's control have begun to rebel and their inhabitants are trying to escape to freedom. Village Hidden in the Grass; Kusagakure Kusagakure is located in the Land of Grass. Nothing apart from that is known about it at this point, but it stands to reason that its ninja specialize in jutsu involving flora or fauna. Judging from the ninja that have hailed from Kusagakure, it can be assumed that this village is far less pleasant than Konohagakure. During the second part of the Chunin exam, Orochimaru and his Sound ninja impersonated a three-man Genin team from Kusagakure using a mysterious technique which literally melts the victims' faces off. This made the unfortunate Grass-nin identifiable only by their ID tags. Later, in the third stage finals of the Chunin exams, two shinobi from Kusagakure were hired to intimidate Gaara into forfeiting his match against Sasuke Uchiha intentionally so their feudal lord would win a bet on the fight. When Gaara didn't respond, they attacked him, and were killed without hesitation. In a stroke of luck, it is their deaths that kept Gaara from attacking Naruto and Shikamaru, since Gaara's bloodlust was satisfied for the moment. Village Hidden in the Clouds; Kumogakure Kumogakure is located in the Land of Lightning. As one of the five great Ninja villages, Kumogakure has a Kage as leader, the Raikage. In that past, Konohagakure and Kumogakure were at war, and during peace talks, the head ninja from this village tried to kidnap Hinata Hyuga to obtain the Byakugan. Hiashi Hyuga killed him before he could do so, causing the village to demand Hiashi's body. This resulted in Neji Hyuga's father, Hizashi Hyuga sacrificing himself in Hiashi's place, and Neji mistakenly blaming the main house for his father's death. Nothing apart from that is known about it at this point, but it stands to reason that its ninja specialize in lightning-based jutsu. It should also be noted that Yugito Nii, the container of the two-tailed demon cat, hails from Kumogakure. According to Kabuto's information cards, no Cloud ninja participated in the Chunin Exam. Village Hidden in the Rain; Amegakure Amegakure is a small hidden village in the Land of Rain that appears highly industrialized. It seems to be a rather loosely knit village, as a fair number of its ninja seem to either be missing-nin or end up as missing-nin. Pein, the leader of Akatsuki, hails from this village and uses it as his base of operations, both for Akatsuki and the faction he leads in the country's civil war. One can infer from the performance of their ninja that long-range combat, genjutsu, and water-based jutsu are emphasized, as are various breathing aids to allow them full mobility in their element. Because of the Land of Rain's tight security, Chunin Exams held in Amegakure are often difficult for other hidden villages due to the stringent security measures they must pass through. At least two of their Genin teams advance to the second stage of the Chunin Exam held in Konoha. The first team is killed by Gaara, while the second team is defeated by Team 7 near the stage's end. This second team appears once more during the Tea Country filler arc, along with a former Konoha Jonin, Aoi Rokusho. In the anime, a third Amegakure team is quickly defeated by Team 8 the moment the stage begins. Allied With None Amekage: Kouji Amekage Healthy |

Village Hidden in the Rocks; Iwagakure Iwagakure is located in the Land of Earth. As one of the five great ninja villages, Iwagakure has a Kage as leader, the Tsuchikage. Little is known about it, but it stands to reason that its ninja specialize in earth-based jutsu. In the past, the village was at war with Konohagakure, part of which is seen in the Kakashi Gaiden arc. A large number of their ninja were slain by the Fourth Hokage, so they are not allies of Konoha. Deidara of Akatsuki hails from here. Allied With None Tsuchikage: None Tsuchikage Healthy |

Village Hidden in the Waterfall; Takigakure The village itself is a lower shinobi country, being allied with Grass, Leaf, Rain and Sand. As such it participates in the Chuunin Exam with these countries. In the Chuunin Exam Naruto participated in, no Waterfall team made it beyond the second exam test. The village itself appeared to not have many active ninja when former Jounin Suien attacked the village, instead relying upon Naruto and Shibuki to defeat the ninja. Chuunin Exam The Chuunin exam is a test to determine which ninja is skilled enough to be ranked as a Chuunin. This event is held twice a year. The only basic requirement is that you have completed a minimum of 8 missions. This Chuunin exam is considered a substitute "war" between the villages to reminisce the wars between ninjas long ago. The Chuunin exam is basically a competition of all the rising ninjas within each village to show off each and everyone's skills and talents. The type of events for each exam varies depending on which village it's held in. In the Chuunin exam held in the Leaf Village, there are three main portions. |
