Buttons lifted his large head to sniff the morning breeze. He was strolling the border between RiverClan and WindClan, heading towards the lake. He felt a small inclination to turn farther into WindClan, yet his better side told him not to. I've already hurt her too much, he thought to himself. Blinking a few times, Buttons licked his chest fur and continued down the gentle slope, away from his past. When he had almost reached the lake, a faint odor on the wind caused him to turn his head.

Fawnkit slouched among the reeds, paws twitching. Her apprentice ceremony had been put off forever, it seemed, and she was tired of it. She wanted to see the territory herself, a mentor breathing down her neck, waiting for her to step over the border so they could scold her.

She tried to keep her pawsteps light, but it felt like she was crashing through the undergrowth. Her paws were too big, too noisy. Her frustration grew as she failed to quiet her steps.

Giving up on her attempt at stealth, Fawnkit sighed. She smelled something odd, and guessed it was one of the borders. Time to head back to camp. She took one last look around and froze. Only a couple fox-lengths away, an unfamiliar cat was looking at her. A cat who didn't belong on RiverClan territory.

"What are you doing here?" she yowled.

Buttons almost had to laugh at the small kit hissing at him from the undergrowth. She had made so much noise approaching he had cast off the sound, thinking it a stupid rabbit. He licked his chest fur a few times before answering her. "I'm here because I can be," his deep meow sounded, "And what are you going to do about it?" Buttons knew he could easily take on a kit, but he didn't want her to alert her entire camp. In an attempt to keep her busy he twitched his tail and tried to sound kind, "So, who are you?"

((-cough- Fawnkit is around apprentice age, and hardly a 'small kit.' Just so ya know. ))

Fawnkit bristled indignantly. "If I tell Streamstar I saw you, she could send the whole Clan after you! You aren't from RiverClan, and I'm not stupid." She kept her guard up, her head darting around wildly, half expecting to be attacked by a band of rogues.

So when the cat asked for her name, taken aback she replied, "Fawnkit." Not to be caught chatting with a rogue, she snapped, "Who are you and what are you doing on RiverClan territory?" She continued looking around, though now she was expecting a stern warrior to take her back to the camp rather than a bunch of bloodthirsty invaders.

Buttons was only a little taken aback by this kit's response, cats usually didn't speak to him like that. A growl almost escaped his lips, but he held himself in check. Instead he meowed, "My name is of no concern to you, and I'm simply traveling through RiverClan territory on my way to the lake." He said RiverClan with disgust, they had forced him out of his homeland when they arrived. While there had been no actuall fighting, Buttons had no doubt that if he had stayed, there would have been. Dragging himself back from his thoughts, he turned back to the fiesty kit - Fawnsomething he remembered - and waited for her response.

Fawnkit was ready to rebuke the tom, then stopped and thought to herself, why bother? She was just a kit, so there was no chance of her stopping him. No patrols would come by for a while either, since Fawnkit had slipped between them.

With that realization out of the way, her hatred of the cat all but evaporated and curiosity took its place; this was her first time this far outside camp, and she hadn't even met any cats from other Clans, much less any cat who hadn't come from any Clan.

"Why do you hate RiverClan so much?" Fawnkit asked, her stew of questions finally boiling over. "Do you hate the other Clans too? Why aren't you in a Clan? Are you a kittypet?"

Buttons allowed his frustration to slip away as the kit began spewing questions. She's almost cute, he thought to himself. Answering one question at a time he began, "No, I'm not a kittypet, although I was. Their ways were to soft for me so I became what you would call a loner." Taking a deep breath he continued. "I dislike all of your so-called Clans because they drive honest cats out of their homes. They also take orders from each other, which is not my way." Thinking he was done with her, Buttons began to knead the ground, preparing to leave.

Fawnkit scowled at the tom and darted forward, all possible consequences for her absence from the camp abandoned as curiosity overwhelmed her. The stranger's answers did not weaken her curiosity, they only created more questions.

Fawnkit pranced closer to the tom and squeaked, "What do you mean? It's mouse-brained to not be in a Clan! They help protect kits and feed the cats who are too old or little to hunt! If you're not in a Clan, what are you gonna do when you get old? What if your mate gets sick, who can help her or her kits without a medicine cat around?"

Fawnkit tilted her head and mewed, "Come on, why can't you tell me your name? It's not like Streamstar can go after you when she doesn't know where you are! Please..." Her words turned into a whine as she resorted to begging. Something about this cat was interesting, like he had a story better than those of the elders from all the Clans combined. Like he lived an adventure every day.

Buttons felt his face get hot under his thick gray fur. Giving his chest a few licks, he answered, "I don't feel the need to tell you my name. You may be allowed to learn it later, if I so choose." Unknown to Fawnkit, he wasn't being secretive, just embarrassed, he hated his name because it sounded so much like a kittypet. Collecting his thoughts, Buttons tried to remember everything Fawnkit had just spewed out and attempted to reply. "First of all," he meowed, "I'm going to call you Fawn, because it's easier to say and because you don't look like you'll be a kit for much longer." Taking a breath, he continued, "While you paint a pretty picture Fawn, I've seen what the Clans are really like. You can tell me how great they are, but you'll see the truth when you are grown." Already knowing what to expect from Fawn, Buttons sat on his powerful haunches and waited for her response.

Fawnkit huffed, leaning back at her haunches and looking at him indignantly. "What are you talking about?" She yowled, a little too loudly, forgetting that warriors from the Clan could be out and about, ready to spring out from the shadows and punish her by putting off her apprentice ceremony.

"I can't believe you'd say something like that." Fawnkit persisted, not bothering to correct the tom. It was true, she would be an apprentice soon, and she was tired of the name 'kit.' "There's nothing wrong with the Clans. If you think they're so bad, tell me what's so horrible about them. And if it's as bad as you say, how do they even exist?"
