Street walker

[Maggie Adems]

You would think out of all these shopes there would be at least one music one. But no insted Maggie was lost looking for one. Well at least she had some good coffee and a huge cookie from the backery. She was wearing a jean skirt and a black T-shirt, along with a news boy cap pearched on top of her head. She stoped in front of a window and looked at the outfit inside. It was pritty but no way she would be able to afford it. She took a bite of her cookie.

Ryder walked down Belmont Avenue, shops lined up on either side of him. He liked some of them- knew the people pretty well- but others he avoided. He ran a hand through his hair, inhaling. He loved weather like this, and especially on his days off. No school, no work. Kinda boring, yes, but nice all the same.

There were a lot of people out today, enjoying the weather. It was Chicago- it was chilly- but it was one of the nicer days. He skirted around people, not wanting to bump into anyone. However, it was to be unavoided. While walking around one person, he bumped into another. A girl, at second look. He grabbed her arm to keep her from falling. "Sorry," he mumbled.

Maggie felt some one bump into her and then grab her arm. "sorry." a male voice mummbled. Maggie looked up into the face of a very hot guy. She felt her face turn red. "No its ok, i shouldnt have been standing like a moron on the street. Thats what I get for comeing from a small town." she said. She felt something warm on her shoe and looked down to see she had spilt her coffee. "Crap!" she swore loudly.

Ryder followed her eyes, looking down. Then he chuckled a bit. "Tough luck," he stated. He noticed the cup was still dripping as it leaned a little in her hand as she looked down, and he reached out to turn it upright. "I'm sure it will dry. Anyway, small town? Which one?" he asked, curiously. He had nothing else to do at the moment.

"hermon Missori. I just moved here..." She almost said, to go to the acadamy, but no that wasnt good. She had learned by now that there was something between the acadamy and the public high students. This boy did not look like a acadamy student, but he did look like some one she would have a good time hanging out with. "....to get off the farm. Me and my mom hated it there anyway." well now. That wasnt a lie...wasnt a truth, but it wasnt a lie.

Ryder laughed. "A farm? And now you are here. You'll have fun here, then." Moving from a farm to here was a pretty big change. No wonder she was just standing on the sidewalk, not moving, annoying the people going to and fro places, he thought with a smirk. "So, you go to the high school, right?" She didn't seem the type to go to the academy up the street. Especially from a farm. Stereotypical, yes, but it was most likely.

"Nope homeschooled." she said. That was a flat out lie, but she didnt want to say she was from the acadamy. "Hey do you know where I can find a music store. I need new strings on my guitar." she said. She took another bite of her cookie. She had moved next to the building to get out of peoples way yet they still were bumping into her. For the first time she relized how small she was.

Home schooled? A trend becoming more and more popular, but Ryder didn't see the point in it. It was just sheltering kids from life. But oh well. He nodded. "Sure, follow me," he said, and starting walking in the opposite direction. He knew where everything was, and like said before, what else did he have to do? Besides, she seemed like an O.K. person. "Home schooled, huh? Why?" He couldn't help but ask.

Maggie smiled and fallowed him. "Because mom wanted to. I really dont have a chioce a lot of the time." she said. Again a half truth. God she wasnt going to be able to keep up with these. Oh well, she'll cross that road when she came to it. "Mom and Dad basicly run my life. They didnt even know I was takeing voice lessons until...well my teacher let it slip to them." LIE.

Ryder snorted. "You don't have a choice? You could always state your opinion." He couldn't relate to her, and he basically ran his own life. His parents weren't the greatest of parents, and left him alone. He raised his eyebrows at her pause. "Why in the world would you keep that back?"

Maggie blushed a little. "Cause I was affraid they'd compare me to my sister. She was born with this awesome voice. I had to grow into mine." Now that was the truth. "I didnt want to be told, 'oh your good, not as good as your sister but good.'"

"Your parents would say that to you? You got some pretty fucked up parents, then," he stated, smirked to himself. Like you had the best?, he thought. He came to the music shop, and held open the door for her. "How did you manage to pull off voice lessons? Where do you work?" That could be considered rude, making the assumption she had to work. But he was blunt in his thoughts, and besides, she is from a small town and homeschooled.

Maggie smiled. "They probably wouldnt, but...it was just a irrational fear i had. I ended up promising my voice teacher that when i become famouse i would thank him while excepting a grammy. Its lucky for me he...." Maggies voice died in her throught as she looked at the shop...."this...is...heven." she said looking at all the guitars and music and keyboards, even some stuff to make you sing better.

Ryder just smirked at her expression. "Have you ever been in one of these places?" he asked her. He grew up in Chicago- was used to city life. Geez... he has been here many many times. "How long have you played guitar?" He preferred the electric guitar and bass. He only knew the basics on an acoustic.

Maggie stared at the guitar. "the one in herman is so much smaller." she ran her hand over a key board. "i learned guitar when i was 12, and i learned keyboard last year." She started playing a song on the piano, then she sang alnog, her deep smoky vioce filling the room like a gift from the hevens.
