The Tale So Far

September, 1741:

Madre de Dios, a Spanish galleon loaded with gold, is on her way back to Europe with her convoy. But an ambush lies in wait for her in the Inaguas – the Sea Hound is planning a bold assault on the larger ship, her pirate crew willing to risk it all for gold and glory. Name: Marianne Whitby

Nickname/Alias: Mary

Age: approximately 17, but looks mid-twenties

Gender: female

Rank/Occupation: beggar, prostitute

Appearance:

Aged prematurely, dark circles around her eyes, bad skin from lack of nutrition and alcohol abuse. Has messy reddish-brown hair that hangs down around her shoulders. She usually ties a cloth around her head to keep it back. Dark brown, dull eyes, sometimes with a vacant expression.

She has a beautiful mouth with full lips, but is missing a few teeth, two of them in the front, upper jaw. There are marks of abuse around her collar bone and lower neck, so she wears strings and strings of coloured beads to cover them.

She only owns one set of clothes, and sometimes if she does wash them, she'll only wear her petticoat and shift. She's homeless and will sleep anywhere she can, she's usually unwashed.

Personality:

With so much uncertainty in her life, Marianne is stressed, sometimes close to panic and tries to dull this with any kind of drug available to her. She has mood swings, is sometimes merry and frolicking, other times dejected, or jealous and acting out. She can't control her impulses very well, and has few ethical standards.

Generally she's a coward, but will strike out if pushed. When drunk she becomes uninhibited, but not violent.

She lives very much in the present, can't remember all of her past, and has no plans or hopes for the future. She seeks quick gratification. Emotionally she's still very childlike and she doesn't have any kind of deeper self-awareness.

In general she responds well to kindness, and isn't suspicious by nature. She's quick to accept anyone as a friend, but just as quick to drop them if she feels betrayed. She is never conniving.

Bio:

Born in poverty to a mother who survived by working as a prostitute. Her father is unknown, could have been either a client or any of the men her mother spent time with. Originally her mother had come to the Caribbean from England, hoping to find work as servant or shop girl, but she wasn't particularly bright and had little luck, so she soon ended up begging on the streets.

They lived above a shop with several other women and children. As a child Marianne often went along with her mother to beg, but it was less effective the older she got. Probably when she was around twelve, her mother was persuaded to accept money to bring her into the “trade”.

At some point Marianne left, maybe because of an argument or maybe she simply didn't return to their room one night. How she ended up in Tortuga she's also not entirely sure. Her memory is spotty.

Now in Tortuga, she fends for herself, often hanging around outside the Pure Poison, jealous of the girls who work there, because they seem so grand and beautiful. She'll bother them, and try to interfere with their clients.

Birthplace: Kingston, Jamaica.

Family:

Mother may or may not still be alive. Father unknown. Probably has siblings, she remembers infants around the room when she was an older child.

Skills:

Quick to pick up foreign languages on a basic level well enough to get by.

Lives hand to mouth and manages to survive.

Quick to adapt to whatever is necessary.

Weaknesses:

Alcohol, tobacco (if she can get her hands on it), and anything that will lull her into a stupor that keeps panic away.

Often apathetic, dissociates from her situation.

She's not clever and has memory gaps.

Theme Song: --

Anything Else:

Picture is a detail from Ilya Repin's painting “Ukrainian Girl”.

Am I even allowed to have a sixth character? Or are you already rolling your eyes and thinking 'oh no, not another one'? wink.gif
